A new video and images posted to Chinese microblogging site Weibo and picked up this morning by NWE offer a side-by-side comparison of an iPhone 7 casing against Apple's current flagship iPhone 6s.

Embedded below, the new video runs to over two and a half minutes and gives a much better idea of the prospective design than last week's seven-second clip.

Whatever the origin of the assembled 4.7-inch iPhone 7 unit, it matches the Space Grey of the iPhone 6s, and features the larger camera and repositioned antenna bands seen in previous images and alleged design leaks. It also clearly shows a lack of headphone jack, with a second speaker grille alongside the Lightning port where it used to be.


The model comparison offers an idea of the relative size of the new camera lens and the surrounding bezel that protrudes from the body of the phone. The video and images also line up with previous rumors suggesting the iPhone 7 will retain the dimensions of the iPhone 6s.

Pokémon Go launched this morning in 26 new countries across Europe, capping a blockbuster week in which the augmented reality-based title became the most popular mobile game ever and saw Nintendo shares set record trading volumes in Tokyo.

The announcement of the multi-country launch was made earlier today on the official Pokémon Go Facebook page.

Pokémon Go is available in twenty-six new countries. As of tonight, Trainers living in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Greece, Greenland, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, and Switzerland are able to download Pokémon GO from the Play Store or App Store.

As a major market, France remains conspicuously absent from the launch list, while rollout in Canada and across the Asian region has yet to begin. Users in several countries have also reported login problems with the game since this morning's announcement, suggesting continuing server-side issues for developers Niantic Labs.

Speaking to Reuters yesterday, chief executive of Niantic John Hanke said Pokémon Go will release in around 200 countries "relatively soon" as developers work to bolster server capacity to enable the wider rollout.

Those comments helped Nintendo shares surge another 10 percent on Friday, setting a record in daily trading volume for an individual stock on the Tokyo exchange. The shares have climbed 86 percent this week, adding $17 billion in market value.

Meanwhile in New York City, a stampede was caught on camera on Friday near Central Park, where a "Vaporeon" pokémon character reportedly showed up. People were seen jumping from cars to capture the creature.


According to The Verge, similar scenes have taken place around the U.S. where rare game characters have appeared, with huge crowds converging on locations such as the Boston Common, Provo City Library in Utah, in Des Moines, Iowa, in Bellevue, Washington, and Altamonte Springs, Florida.

Earlier this week, U.S. mobile carrier T-Mobile announced it plans to offer its customers free data to play the game, while Sprint and affiliated Boost Mobile stores are providing charging stations to players, and even training up store staff to help customers locate nearby game features.

Niantic has also revealed it is considering introducing a sponsorship scheme similar to one it has with its other AR-based game Ingress, which assigns sponsors' stores and vending machines as spots in the game.

Update: The Pokémon Go Servers Twitter account has linked to an article by The Independent claiming that a hacking group called PoodleCorp has claimed responsbility for taking down the servers using a denial-of-service attack. Gamers are advised to check back with the account for further updates.

Update 2: Pokémon Go is now available in Canada.

Update 3: Niantic has announced it postponed the launch of the game in France "as a sign of respect for the French people in this time of national mourning." The game was expected to release Friday, July 15 in the country, but the company didn't hint as to when the expected debut is now set to happen.

Apple has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Copyright Royalty Board calling for a simplified way to pay songwriters and music publishers for streaming music, according to Billboard. While the change would benefit labels, artists and publishers, it would make it more difficult for streaming services like Spotify to continue offering free tiers.

Apple, which has always had a gift for creative simplicity, wants to make this process easier and more transparent, according to a copy of the filing obtained by Billboard. The company’s proposal to the Copyright Royalty Board suggests a simple, “all-in” statutory rate that would be “fair, simple and transparent, unlike the incredibly complicated structure that currently exists.”

Apple's suggested rate is 9.1 cents per 100 plays, which would make the songwriting royalties for 100 streams equal to the royalties for a single song download. However, the change would make it more expensive for companies like Spotify and YouTube to offer free music tiers.

The current system sees streaming companies paying songwriters and publishers between 10.5 and 12 percent of their revenue using what Billboard terms a "complicated formula." The money is then divided into public performance and mechanical royalties, which is then paid to publishers and "collected societies." Currently, Apple and other streaming music providers don't have to pay publishers the statutory rate set by the Royalty Board because they can negotiate their own deals. However, negotiations between publishers and streaming services would start at a different place should Apple's proposal become rule.

The Copyright Royalty Board, which is made up of a panel of three judges, is still in the early stages of determining potential statuary rates for 2018 to 2022 so it's unclear whether Apple's proposal would take hold or ever come to be.

While Apple Music has garnered about 15 million paying subscribers in the year since its launch, rival Spotify has twice as many, with the company citing Apple's entrance into paid music streaming as a boon to its business. Despite user and revenue growth, Spotify continues to operate at a loss due to expensive royalties and revenue sharing with music labels, with recent losses growing 10 percent to $195.7 million.

Yelp is getting in on the Pokémon Go action, adding a new filter that will let users discover restaurants and other businesses located near PokéStops to make it easier to find new Pokémon and other bonuses.

Added via an over-the-air update going out today, Yelp's new Pokémon filter is available at the top of the app when searching for a venue to visit, right alongside other filters like "Good for Lunch," "Price," and "Open Now."

earpods_tableWith it looking more and more like Apple is going to remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7, we've seen considerable speculation and discussion about the transition to either wired Lightning headphones or Bluetooth options. Looking at the wireless possibilities, the first iPhone 7 headphone jack rumors immediately reminded us of an "AirPods" trademark filing we discovered last October that seemed likely to be linked to Apple, although conclusive proof could not be found at the time.

That AirPods trademark application was filed by a previously unknown company by the name of Entertainment in Flight LLC, which carried many of the hallmarks of being a shell company operated by Apple for the purposes of hiding its true identity. Apple has used such companies on many previous occasions, including for "iPad" and "CarPlay" that were ultimately used in product names and others such as "iWatch" that ended up scrapped in favor of other names.

As the AirPods trademark has continued through the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office review process, additional documents have been filed that we believe confirm Apple is behind the filing while providing evidence Apple continues to have interest in protecting the name.

FIS and Payment Alliance International have announced a new partnership that will see cardless withdrawals with Touch ID enabled at over 70,000 ATMs at stores, gas stations, restaurants, and shopping malls across the United States.

FIS Cardless Cash is a QR code-based solution that will reduce the risk of card skimming and shoulder surfing at ATMs by allowing customers to securely withdraw their funds through an iPhone app without inserting a plastic card into the machine. All transactions will require Touch ID verification as an additional layer of security.

Payment Alliance International is the largest independent operator of non-bank-owned ATMs in the United States, and its partnership with FIS makes NYCE the first national payment network to support mobile phone-to-ATM transactions.

Bloomberg previously reported that Payment Alliance International will start rolling out the technology in August or September, and plans to have cardless cash access at 25,000 machines in the U.S. by the end of 2017. FIS and Payment Alliance International did not confirm those specific plans in their announcement.

This announcement follows in the footsteps of Bank of America rolling out support for withdrawing cash from its ATMs using Apple Pay for a few months. Wells Fargo will also enable support for Apple Pay withdrawals at many of its ATMs by year end, while Chase Bank plans to upgrade its ATMs with cardless technology this year.

Apple Music's string of exclusive content continues today with the debut of "Rise," a new single from Katy Perry set to coincide with the upcoming 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. The song was released late last night, and is an exclusive to iTunes as well as Apple's streaming music service.

In a statement, Perry said that the timing of the song felt right to share it now, instead of waiting for her next album, because she sees that "there is a need for our world to unite." NBC also confirmed that it will play Rise as the anthem of the Rio Olympics, with the new single set to play before and throughout the Summer Games.

“This is a song that’s been brewing inside me for years, that has finally come to the surface. I was inspired to finish it now, rather than save it for my next album, because now more than ever, there is a need for our world to unite,” the Grammy nominee said in a statement.

“I know that together we can rise above the fear – in our country, and around the world. I can’t think of a better example than the Olympic athletes, as they gather in Rio with their strength and fearlessness, to remind us how we ALL can come together, with the resolve to be the best we can be. I hope this song can inspire us to heal, unite, and rise together. I am honored that NBC Olympics has chosen to use it as an anthem before and during the Rio Games.”

Apple Music turned one year old in June, with subscriber numbers now reaching above 15 million, which Apple CEO confirmed during WWDC. Also during its keynote in June, Apple revealed an incoming redesign for its streaming music service, set to debut within iOS 10, where Apple Music will get a simpler navigation interface and bolder fonts. Following in the wake of multiple artist and song exclusives, Apple Music head of original content Larry Jackson described the service's current goal as "MTV in its 80s and 90s Heyday."

CBS today announced the launch of an all-new Apple TV app that will center around the network's always-on, 24-hour "CBSN" streaming network and has been designed exclusively for tvOS. In addition to the live stream of CBSN, the app curates news stories and video playlists for each user based on previously watched videos.

The new app will also take advantage of the 4th generation Apple TV's deep Siri integration, allowing users to tell Apple's personal assistant that they want to "Watch CBS News" to immediately start a full-screen broadcast of CBSN. While the stream is playing, users can interact with other parts of the app to browse related videos, bookmark some to watch later, and begin subscribing to specific playlists and topics.

"Our Apple TV app represents the future of how viewers will consume and interact with video," Christy Tanner, senior vice president and general manager of CBS News Digital, said. "We are taking advantage of the platform's cutting-edge, interactive technology to offer a customizable experience."

Last night a few users began reporting that their Apple IDs had been compromised, causing them to be locked out of their accounts. Recovering and password resets worked for a handful of Apple IDs, but it was still unclear overnight what might have been happening to cause the small breach in Apple's otherwise secure universal log-in system.

This morning speculation came to a close as third-party email client Spark confirmed that an upgrade to faster servers for iCloud users on the platform triggered the issue and forced password resets in a collection of Apple IDs. The company mentioned that it has been preparing to launch Spark for Mac, which was the reason for the faster server upgrade, but now promises that "there's NO breach or data leak" that users have to worry about.

As some users have noted, the security problem didn't hit all Spark users who use the service with their iCloud account. The company said that it's working with Apple to get the issue fixed as soon as possible, but it seems that users affected by the security lockouts need not worry about malicious attempts at entry into their private Apple ID at least. If Readdle posts any more updates on its fix for the problem, we'll update this story as well.

Apple stock enjoyed its biggest one-day rise since May on Thursday, following a brief dip as investors speculated on the company's prospects in the run-up to its Q3 earnings call and the release of the iPhone 7 later this year.

Shares closed at $98.78, almost hitting their previous high since Apple reported its fiscal Q2 earnings, when the company's stock fell below $100. Shares remain down 26% from its own record high close of $133 set on February 23, 2015.

The rise followed Wednesday's blip after consumer research firm Kantar Worldpanel released data showing that Samsung is outselling Apple in U.S. smartphone sales.

In the three months ending in May, Samsung accounted for 37% of all U.S. smartphone purchases, with Apple at 29%. However, a closer look at the figures showed Samsung's Galaxy S7 series accounted for 16% of sales in the same period, while the iPhone 6S series accounted for 14.6%, suggesting a much closer battle when it comes to flagship devices.

Outside the U.S., Kantar data revealed that Apple's iPhone 6s and 5s were the top two best-selling phones in the U.K., followed by the Samsung Galaxy J5 and the iPhone SE.

In Q2 2016, Apple saw its first year-over-year revenue decline since 2003 along with its first ever drop in iPhone sales, and that downward trend is expected to continue into the third quarter of the year.

The company's earnings announcement for the third fiscal quarter (second calendar quarter) of 2016 will take place on Tuesday, July 26.

Last week, industry research revealed that Mac sales experienced a slight year-over-year decline in the second quarter, dropping to 4.4 million from 4.8 million during the year-ago period. Apple fell behind ASUS to finish as the fifth-largest PC vendor by shipments worldwide.

Apple has not updated the MacBook Pro in over 400 days, with a refresh for its entire MacBook Pro line-up expected in the fourth quarter. The company is expected to unveil its new iPhones in the fall.

Music video platform Vevo has released a major update to its iOS app as part of a wider continuing effort to revamp the brand.

Users of the app can now create profiles to share their music preferences with friends, while an update to the main feed means videos play in zoomed portrait view in addition to landscape.

Machine learning has also been introduced to the app's server back end, offering more intelligent auto-generated playlists based on what users are already listening to.

Additionally, the company has partnered with a handful of original content curators, like Stereogum's Scott Lapatine and Rap Radar's Brian "B. Dot" Miller, to serve new videos and playlists to users directly through the app.

Back in February, Vevo released its Apple TV app – also soon to be updated – in a move that attempts to pitch it as an MTV-like music video destination for the digital era.

The platform currently has 400 million active monthly users, over half of which view Vevo content through the brand's mobile app.

The European rollout of smash hit Pokémon Go continued today with App Store launches in Italy, Spain, and Portugal, joining the U.K. and Germany where the game debuted in the last couple of days.

In the U.S. alone, players on iOS are spending about $1.6 million each day on in-app transactions within the game, according to data from app analytics firm Sensor Tower. Of those IAPs, 30 percent of the revenue earned goes straight in Apple's pockets.

Nintendo shares jumped nearly 10 percent to a six-year high on Friday as the retro-styled title became more popular than Twitter just one week after its launch in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand.

"When you look at the way it's becoming a social phenomenon in the U.S., the rally is understandable even though it's not clear yet how much it will boost profits," markets analyst Toshiyuki Kanayama told Reuters.

"People still remember the time when the Wii and the DS became a hit and boosted Nintendo's shares," he added, referring to the company's popular game consoles – one of which Nintendo has announced will be returning to stores around the world on November 11 in the form of the 'NES Classic Mini'.

Meanwhile, in yet another Pokémon-related incident, two men fell down a 75ft cliff in Encinitas, California, yesterday as they tried to catch nearby virtual creatures. One of the men fell 50ft while the other reportedly fell all the way to the beach below.

According to FOX affiliate local news, rescue crews used a rope to reach one of the men, but despite the large fall neither of them suffered serious injuries.

As part of its T-Mobile Tuesday offerings, T-Mobile plans to offer its customers free data for hit augmented reality game Pokémon Go. Starting on July 19, T-Mobile subscribers will be able to play Pokémon Go without using up their monthly data.

T-Mobile plans to provide free unlimited high-speed data for Pokémon Go for all subscribers through August 17, 2017. Customers will need to redeem the gift in the T-Mobile Tuesdays app between July 19 and August 9, 2016.

Next Tuesday's T-Mobile Tuesday offering, which is Pokémon themed, will also include free Lyft rides up to $15, a free Wendy's frosty, and up to 50 percent off all accessories at T-Mobile stores. 250 T-Mobile subscribers will win $100 in PokéCoins to spend in the app and five people will win a Pokémon Go hunting trip anywhere in the United States.

T-Mobile first unveiled T-Mobile Tuesdays last month, marking the debut of its eleventh Uncarrier promotion. T-Mobile Tuesdays brings customers a variety of weekly freebies, from food and movie tickets to ride-sharing credits.

Several images depicting what's believed to be the rear casing of the iPhone 7 have been surfacing on Chinese social networking sites in recent weeks, and today, a short video gives a more in-depth look at the prospective design of the device.

Shared by Dutch site TechTastic, the video features the same casing we've seen in photos, with relocated antenna bands that no longer span across the back of the device, a larger protruding camera hole to perhaps accommodate an improved image sensor, and overall, a design that's not much different than the design of the iPhone 6s.


Photos of the iPhone 7 casing have largely ignored the bottom of the device, which is actually visible in the video. Of note is the lack of a headphone jack, one of the most widely rumored iPhone 7 design changes Apple is undertaking. With no headphone jack, Apple will have more space for other components and will perhaps be able to improve the water resistance of the iPhone 7.

Also visible in the video is a second speaker hole located where the headphone jack used to be. There have been some rumors suggesting Apple will introduce stereo sound in the iPhone 7, but rumors disagree on this point.

Today's video only features the iPhone 7, but all of the above design elements are expected to extend to the iPhone 7 Plus, with the exception of the camera. The iPhone 7 Plus is rumored to have a dual-lens camera with a wider camera cutout.

As of this week, Apple retail stores and the Apple online store will begin selling a new fitness-related product, the Tangram Smart Rope. iphonesecameraApple plans to open a research laboratory in Grenoble, France focused on developing improved imaging sensors and techniques for its iOS devices, according to French newspaper Dauphiné Libéré, with details shared by iPhon.fr [Google Translate].

Apple has had a team of more than a dozen researchers and engineers working on imaging research and development for more than a year at the Minatec European research center, and recently signed a lease to establish its own research laboratory in Grenoble.

The new facility, located on Rue Ampere, will give Apple the space to hire additional researchers and it will allow the company to provide its research team with specialized equipment for sensor development. Apple plans to have approximately 30 engineers working at the research lab, which will span 800 square meters.

According to the newspaper, Apple's work on sensors for the iPhone and iPad will be done in collaboration with engineers from Apple partner STMicroelectronics, which has supplied components for Apple devices in the past.

With the iPhone positioned as the most popular point-and-shoot camera in the world, Apple has invested a lot of resources into continual improvements, introducing better image quality with each iteration of the device. This year, we may see some of the biggest image improvements yet, as Apple is expected to introduce a camera with a larger sensor in the iPhone 7 and a dual-lens camera setup in the iPhone 7 Plus.

Eddy-CueApple executive Eddy Cue, who oversees services like the iTunes Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, Siri, Maps, and iAd, sat down for a wide-ranging interview with The Hollywood Reporter about the future of Apple TV, the company's relationship with Hollywood studios, and more.

When questioned about the original programming space, Cue said Apple is not in the business of trying to create TV shows, nor is it trying to compete with the likes of Netflix or Comcast. Instead, he said Apple may "help" producers, as it is doing for Planet of the Apps.

We're not in the business of trying to create TV shows. If we see it being complementary to the things we're doing at Apple Music or if we see it being something that's innovative on our platform, we may help them and guide them and make suggestions. But we're not trying to compete with Netflix or compete with Comcast.

Cue also downplayed rumors about Apple's interest in purchasing Time Warner, stating that the company is "not actively trying to buy any studio" right now.

In general, there's always a lot of speculation across many different companies, and some of that relates to the fact that we have a lot of money and so, therefore, we can afford to make acquisitions. So we have a lot of discussions with [Time Warner], but I don't want to speculate. We're not — at this point, certainly — actively trying to buy any studio.

Cue said Apple is only interested in entering the content space when the projects are tied to its existing products, which for now is Apple Music.

The rest of it is about giving [talent] a platform that allows them to be creative in new ways. If I was an agent, I would be very, very excited about what Apple is doing because it lets the people that I represent be able to do more.

Cue said he makes business trips to Los Angeles, where Apple has a growing team surrounding Apple Music and Beats, about five to six times per month. Apple's relationship with Hollywood, which began with Steve Jobs, is said to have "gotten better and better" over time as the industry warms up to Silicon Valley.

Yesterday, Apple posted an open casting call for its upcoming original TV show Planet of the Apps, an unscripted program about apps and the people who make them. The series will be spearheaded by executive producers will.i.am, Ben Silverman, and Howard Owens, with filming to take place in Los Angeles in late 2016 and early 2017.
