Review: Anker's Compact PowerPort Atom PD 2 Offers Up to 60W of Power for Charging Your Devices

Anker in late April announced the launch of its latest power adapter for charging Apple devices, the PowerPort Atom PD 2. Anker's newest PowerPort offers two USB-C charging ports and up to 60W of power in an enclosure that's smaller than standard stock laptop chargers. The PowerPort Atom PD 2 uses Gallium nitride or GaN, a new material that allows semiconductor components to be shrunk down, leading to smaller charging accessories. Anker has been updating its power adapter line with GaN, bringing more compact charging options that take up less space. Design wise, the PowerPort Atom PD 2 is smaller than your standard 61W or 87W charger for the MacBook Pro, but it's not as small and compact as the lower power 30W PowerPort Atom PD 1. It measures in at 2.68 inches by 2.72 inches and it's just over an inch thick. Comparatively, Apple's 61W USB-C Power Adapter is 2.85 by 2.85 inches, and it's about the same thickness, so you're not saving a lot of space with the PowerPort Atom PD 2, but as explained below, it's a lot more versatile. It's made from a shiny white plastic material with a gray face, an Anker logo at the side, and a charging indicator to let you know when it's in use. At the back, there's a set of retractable prongs that you can fold up when the power adapter isn't in use to make it easier to carrying around. There are two USB-C ports built into the PowerPort Atom PD 2, which none of Apple's chargers can boast. With two USB-C ports, you're not limited to charging one USB-C device at a time. There are no cables included, so you're going to need to

Review: Anker's 30W 'Atom' USB-C Charger is Tiny, Affordable, and Perfect for Charging iPhones, iPads, and MacBooks

With a new material called Gallium nitride (GaN), semiconductor components have been able to be shrunk down, leading to smaller than ever charging accessories. Several accessory makers have been taking advantage of GaN technology for new products, including Anker. Anker recently debuted the PowerPort Atom PD 1, a 30W USB-C charger that's much smaller than the USB-C power adapters offered by Apple and, in fact, not much larger than an iPhone charger. The Atom measures in at 1.4 inches wide and 1.5 inches tall, which is about 40 percent smaller than the similar 29/30W USB-C chargers that ship with the MacBook and MacBook Air. Design wise, there's not a whole lot to say about the Atom. It's a small white charger that's almost cube shaped, with a shiny face and a single USB-C port that has "PD" written above it to denote its status as a USB-C PD power adapter. At the side, there's an Anker logo. The plug at the back is not collapsible, likely due to its small size, which is one minor negative. It doesn't fold down, so the prongs are always going to be sticking out. The small size of the Atom is convenient because when you plug it in to an outlet or a power strip, it doesn't take up unnecessary space. In my case, I have a power strip in a cable organizing box, and power adapter size can be a real concern in this kind of situation. A smaller power adapter doesn't take up more than one outlet, and it can be placed in either the top or bottom slots. It's also not in the way with a power strip, and it's more versatile than Apple's own power adapters. As

Review: Anker's Soundcore Life 2 Bluetooth Headphones Offer Active Noise Cancelation Without Breaking the Bank

Anker is best known for its well-received power banks and mobile charging accessories, but the Chinese company has also been busy building its subsidiary Soundcore brand, under which it offers home audio products like smart Bluetooth speakers and wireless earphones. Anker says its ethos of making quality electronic devices at an affordable price also extends to its audio accessory lineup, so I gave the company's new Soundcore Life 2 noise-canceling headphones a spin to test out this claim. The latest addition to Anker's headset range costs $80 and replaces the company's first attempt at over-ear active noise-canceling (ANC) headphones, last year's Space NC cans. As with that pair, Anker is aiming to corner the sub-$100 noise-canceling market, so direct comparisons with premium ANC headphones offered by the likes of Bose and Sony wouldn't be fair. So how do they stack up on their own?

Review: Anker Debuts New 7.5-Watt 'PowerWave' Wireless Chargers Optimized for iPhones, On Sale Up to 20% Off

With the launch of the iPhone X, 8, and 8 Plus last September, Apple finally embraced wireless smartphone charging, and as of the release of iOS 11.2 in December, the devices became able to support faster 7.5-watt charging. Belkin and Mophie were Apple's launch partners for wireless charging, with their optimized charging bases launching alongside the new phones and supporting the 7.5-watt power targeted by Apple. While Belkin and Mophie's chargers had Apple's early seal of approval, plenty of other manufacturers already had wireless chargers rated at 5 watts and higher on the market. Pretty much all of them work just fine with iPhones, and in fact in our testing we found not much difference in iPhone charging speed between 5-watt and 7.5-watt chargers. Now that Apple's 7.5-watt charging spec has been available for a while, we're starting to see more accessory manufacturers launching new chargers optimized to work with the new iPhones. One of the first major brands out of the gate in this wave is Anker, which has long been very popular with consumers for offering solid charging accessories at good prices with excellent customer service. I profiled some of Anker's previous wireless chargers back in December as part of my early wireless charger roundup, and several of those models have been strong sellers. With Apple's specs for 7.5-watt charging now available, Anker today is releasing two new wireless chargers optimized to work with the iPhone. The new chargers, arriving under the "PowerWave" marketing name, feature built-in fans to help keep things cool and

Best Wireless Chargers for iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus

With the release of the iPhone X, iPhone 8, and iPhone 8 Plus, Apple now supports Qi-based wireless inductive charging on its latest phones, and that means charging pads have quickly become popular accessories for iPhone owners. Apple's favored partners for wireless charging pads are Belkin and mophie, and Apple is carrying a $60 charger from each company in its own online and retail stores. But there are lots of other options available on the market, and we've had a chance to try out a number of them, so we're rounding them up in this guide which we'll continue to update going forward.

Anker Opens Pre-Orders for First MFi Lightning to USB-C cable, Shipping February 20

Mobile accessory maker Anker has opened pre-orders for the first Apple-certified USB-C to Lightning cable under the Made for iPhone (MFi) program, and will start shipping the cables later this month. Apple late last year began allowing third-party companies to produce MFi certified USB-C to Lightning cables, and as a result, multiple companies have announced the upcoming launch of new USB-C to Lightning cable options. However, as noted by The Verge, it looks like Anker will be the first to make the accessory available, thanks to its PowerLine II USB-C Cable with Lightning Cable. The cables will be available in both three and six-foot lengths and in different colors, but pre-orders are currently only for the three-foot White PowerLine II, which costs $15.99. An equivalent one-meter (or three-and-a-quarter foot) USB-C to Lightning cable from Apple costs $19. All cables support Anker's Power Delivery system (using its separately available USB-C Wall Adaptor), have a 12,000 bend lifespan, and come with a lifetime warranty. The company originally planned to launch the cables in March 2019, but initial pre-orders will now ship around February

Anker to Launch USB-C to Lightning Cables in March

Apple late last year began allowing third-party companies to produce Made for iPhone or "MFi" certified USB-C to Lightning cables, and as a result, multiple companies have been announcing the upcoming launch of new USB-C to Lightning cable options. Anker today said that it plans to launch its first USB-C to Lightning cables in March 2019. Anker's Powerline+ USB-C to Lightning cables will feature an aluminum shell and protective braided nylon for durability, while the Powerline version will feature aramid fiber for improved strength. The cables will be available in both three and six-foot lengths, with pricing to be announced at a later date. Anker is also coming out with a USB-C to Lightning Audio Adapter, designed for Macs with USB-C ports and the new iPad Pro. The adapter will allow Lightning headphones to be plugged into a USB-C port. The USB-C to Lightning Audio Adapter is set to launch in April 2019. Starting tomorrow, Anker is launching its Powerport Atom PD 1, the smallest 30W charger on the market. Priced at $29.99, it uses gallium nitride, a new material that's being used in ultra small chargers for heat dissipation purposes. Anker's new Powerport Atom PD 1 and the upcoming cables will be available on Amazon. Along with Anker, several other companies are coming out with USB-C to Lightning cables in the near future. Belkin and Griffin both have Lightning to USB-C cables coming in the near future at prices starting at $24.99 and $19.99, respectively. Prior to 2019, Apple made the only official USB-C to Lightning cables available for purchase,

CES 2019: Anker Announces Soundcore 'Rave' Series of Portable Speakers

Anker has announced a new line of portable speakers under its Soundcore home audio brand. Dubbed the Rave series, the high-watt speakers are aimed at providing the soundtrack to your next outdoor summer party. The standard Rave speaker costs $200, is splash resistant, and comes with dual two-inch tweeters and two 5.25-inch woofers that combine to deliver 160 watts of sound. Next in the line-up is the $150 Rave Mini, an IPX7-rated waterproof speaker that packs a two-inch tweeter and identical woofers, and offers 80W output for up to 18 hours on a single charge. While both of those models aren't set to launch in the U.S. until the summer, Anker does plan to bring two additional Rave speakers to market as early as this spring. Called the Icon and Icon Mini, these two smaller models are both dust-resistant and waterproof, and are light enough to float in water. The standard Icon features a 12-hour battery and will cost $50, while the Icon Mini offers eight hours' battery life and will cost $30. In addition to the Rave series of speakers, this spring Anker is also launching the $100 Soundcore Wakey, an alarm clock that doubles as a wireless

CES 2019: Anker Launching 'World's Smallest' USB-C Power Delivery Wall Charger Later This Month

Apple-certified accessory maker Anker today at CES 2019 announced that its PowerPort Atom PD 1 power adapter, which it calls "the world's smallest Power Delivery wall charger," will be available to order later this month. Anker's PowerPort Atom PD 1 The PowerPort Atom PD 1 is about the size of the five-watt charger that comes in the box with every iPhone thanks to the use of gallium nitride components. Nonetheless, it has a max output of 30W, enough to charge not only smartphones but larger devices such as a 12-inch MacBook, Chromebook, or a Nintendo Switch. The Atom series will be Anker's new line of slim, lightweight Power Delivery wall chargers, with a 60-watt dual USB-C port Atom PD 2 charger and a 100-watt dual USB-C, dual USB-A port Atom PD 4 charger also planned for release. Anker first unveiled the Atom PD 1 at an event in New York City in October, but failed to meet its promised November release date at the time. The charger will be available exclusively on Amazon for $29.99 in the United States, according to the accessory maker, with a revised release date of January 2019. Anker Unveils Miniature 27-Watt USB-C Charger, Premium Smart Speaker, and Pocket Cinema

Anker announced several new hardware devices at an event in New York City today. Best known for its quality mobile charging accessories, the company continued its push into other consumer electronics markets by unveiling a pocket cinema, a premium smart speaker, and a new line of minuscule USB-C wall chargers. Starting with the chargers, the PowerPort Atom PD 1 is the smallest 27-watt USB-C power plug that Anker has come up with to date. It's about the size of the 5-watt charger that comes with an iPhone, but pumps out enough juice to power larger devices like a 12-inch MacBook, a Chromebook, and a Nintendo Switch. Anker says it has used Gallium Nitride components in the charger instead of silicon, which has allowed the company to maximize efficiency while minimizing size. The PowerPort Atom PD 1 weighs 2.2 ounces and fits in the palm of the hand, measuring in at 1.61 x 1.37 x 1.49 inches The PD 1 is just the first in the Atom line, with a 60-watt two USB-C port PD 2 charger and a 100-watt four-port (2x USB-C, 2x USB-A) PD 4 charger also on the way. The Anker PowerPort Atom PD 1 will be available exclusively on the Amazon website from the end of November for $30. Meanwhile, Anker announced the Soundcore Model Zero+, a new Bluetooth and Wi-Fi smart speaker that sports a unique radial purse-like design with a built-in handle. It's the first portable speaker from Anker to feature integrated Dolby Audio, and includes drivers designed by Scan-Speak for optimal audio performance. The Model Zero+ speaker comes with Google Assistant and also supports Google

Anker's $35 Smart Speaker With Built-in Alexa Claims Better Audio Than Amazon's Echo Dot

Popular accessory company Anker launched its own low-cost smart speaker with built-in Alexa on Wednesday called the Eufy Genie. Costing $35, the Genie is a little bigger than Amazon's Echo Dot, which retails at $50, but claims to offer stronger bass and double the volume of Amazon's equivalent device thanks to a 2W speaker. The Genie's list of features pretty much tallies with Echo Dot's abilities, so it can play music, control other smart home devices, order products, answer questions, set calendars, report the weather and news, and more. According to Anker, it's also possible to use the Amazon Alexa app with the Genie to access over 10,000 skills and services, such as Pandora, Domino's Pizza, Uber, ESPN, NPR News, and more. Future updates from Eufy are said to include the ability directly control Spotify with your voice, and Alexa messaging and calling. The Genie also links up to other smart products under Anker's Eufy brand, which include a robotic vacuum cleaner, air purifier devices, and a range of domestic lighting. According to The Verge, Anker also plans to introduce a $40 version of the Eufy Genie that includes Bluetooth support, which might let it connect to external speakers for playing music. The Eufy Genie is available to pre-order off Amazon today but doesn't ship until August 16. Eufy plans to launch the speaker in Europe around mid-October. Further details on the Genie and Anker's other products under the Eufy brand can be found on the Eufy website. Note: Amazon is an affiliate of MacRumors and we may benefit from clicked links in this

MacRumors Giveaway: Win a PowerLine Lightning Cable and PowerCore+ External Battery from Anker [Updated]

For this week's giveaway, we've teamed up with Anker. For those of you unfamiliar with Anker, the company has a lot of fans on the MacRumors forums and across the Internet (check out their Facebook page) thanks to its wide range of inexpensive, quality products. For our giveaway, Anker is providing 20 MacRumors readers with its new super durable 3-ft PowerLine Lightning cables paired with a 3,350 mAh PowerCore+ mini external battery. Anker's PowerLine Lightning cables are designed to be ultra durable, built with bulletproof Kevlar fiber with reinforced stress points to hold up to daily abuse. Unlike Apple's cables, Anker's aren't going to tear, fray, or otherwise break. Anker says these have a 5000+ bend lifespan, making them more durable than other cables on the market. The PowerLine cable uses dual-layer sheathing with an inner layer of braided copper that's thicker than what's used in OEM cables to reduce cable resistance. According to Anker, its cable offers the fastest possible charge and sync speeds with any USB charger. The Anker PowerLine cable comes in 3-foot lengths for $9.99 and 6-foot lengths for $14.99, with both available in multiple colors. Anker's also giving away its classic tube-shaped PowerCore+ mini, a portable 3,350 mAh battery with enough power to charge up the iPhone 6s to full and add quite a bit of extra juice to the iPhone 6s Plus. Anker's PowerCore+ mini is available for $9.99. Along with these two products, Anker sells a whole slew of useful accessories for charging Macs and iOS devices that are worth checking out on Amazon. 20
