Apple is Tightening the Rules on 'What's New' Changelogs in App Store

Apple this week informed members of its Developer Program that it will be enforcing stricter rules for "What's New in This Version," the section on the App Store in which developers can list changes they made to their apps. Starting in April, developers will only be able to edit the "What's New" text when submitting a new version of their app. In other words, any changes to the text will now be subject to Apple's standard App Store review process. The requirement will extend to editing an app's support URL or marketing URL, according to Apple's announcement posted in iTunes Connect. While this is a minor change, Apple evidently felt the need to have a little more control over information passing through the App Store without its approval. It's possible that a few developers were taking advantage of the flexibility for bad reasons, such as pointing support or marketing URLs to malicious websites.

Apple has advised developers to make sure their apps are up to date by Thursday, December 22, as new apps and app updates will not be accepted between Friday, December 23 and Tuesday, December 27. Apple Makes New App Analytics Beta Available to All Developers

At the beginning of the month, Apple debuted a new app analytics platform that gives developers a detailed look at app usage statistics. The feature was initially limited to those who requested access to the beta testing program, but as of today, Apple is giving all developers access to the App Analytics beta. Developers are now receiving emails letting them now about the availability of the new feature, which is free with an iOS Developer Program membership and requires no additional coding or app updates. App Analytics gives developers access to a number of different usage stats, letting them determine the effectiveness of marketing campaigns and promotions. The feature lets developers see which websites and blogs drive the most traffic to an app, and it determines how many app downloads a developer's App Store product page earns. By creating unique links for each marketing campaign, a developer can determine what's effective and what's not, and detailed user engagement metrics let developers see how people are using apps. There's information active devices, number of sessions, and retention, so a developer can tell how long someone's using an app and how often. Apple's App Analytics information is currently available to all iTunes Connect users who have an Admin, Finance, or Sales role. On the consumer end, customers need not worry about developers having access to personal info -- Apple only displays aggregated data, not personally identifiable information from customers. TestFlight Experiencing Extended Downtime for Many Developers

It has not been a good week for Apple's developer services. Less than a day after iTunes Connect experienced a lengthy outage that lasted several hours, TestFlight is now unavailable for many developers. The beta testing service for iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch apps has been returning a "currently unavailable" message since as early as Wednesday afternoon around 6:00 PM Pacific. App Store and iTunes Among Apple Services Experiencing Downtime [Fixed]

A number of Apple services are experiencing an extended period of downtime, including the App Store and iTunes Connect. The iOS and Mac App Stores are displaying various error messages to users about being unable to connect or certain items being unavailable, as spotted by The Next Web, and iTunes Connect and TestFlight are also down for developers. The outage is affecting a significant number of users in the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, India and many other countries worldwide. The downtime appears to have been ongoing for several hours this morning, although Apple has yet to update its System Status page to reflect the downtime for the iOS App Store, Mac App Store, iTunes Connect, TestFlight or any other affected Apple services. @AppStore is the store down atm keep getting this message. Apple lists that iCloud sign in and mail was down for all users between roughly 2:00 AM to 5:45 AM Pacific Time, although it is clear that other services were affected as well. While the App Store and iTunes have returned online in some regions, a number of Apple services still appear to be experiencing intermittent downtime in several countries. iTunes Connect Issue Causing Developers to Be Logged Into Wrong Accounts [Updated]

A number of iTunes Connect developers have turned to Twitter and tipped us off about an ongoing issue where users are being shown someone else's session after attempting to login into their own account. Instead of seeing their own apps, iTunes Connect is mismatching users and displaying other apps from completely different developers. MacRumors has been able to duplicate this issue, which appears to be widespread and has been going on since at least 8 AM Pacific. Sales and payment information does not appear to be accessible for the mismatched account. For some other users, iTunes Connect also appears to be experiencing issues with logging in. Apple has yet to comment on the matter, and this post will be updated as further details become known. Update 8:50 AM PT: iTunes Connect is now listed as unavailable. Update 10:03 AM: Apple has now acknowledged on its System Status page for developers that users are "experiencing a problem" with iTunes Connect. Apple to Shut Down Old TestFlight Beta Testing Website in February

Apple today began notifying developers about the upcoming closure of the old TestFlight beta testing service accessible through TestFlightApp.com, reports The Next Web. The impending February 26 shutdown of the standalone website arrives nearly one year after Apple's acquisition of TestFlight through its purchase of Burstly and subsequent integration of the service into iTunes Connect. TestFlight on iTunes Connect and the legacy website were operated as independent services over the past year, enabling developers to test significant changes to their apps. Apple now encourages TestFlightApp users to export current testers so that they can be imported to the iTunes Connect version, and has posted a help document to help developers transition between the services. The new version of TestFlight is available for iOS 8 and later.
