Mac OS 10.6 Reference In iPhone SDK Beta 6

MacRumors member crees! has found a reference to Mac OS 10.6 in the 6th iPhone SDK installer.

While not earth-shattering, this would seem to indicate that Apple does plan to continue using the Mac OS 10.x numbering scheme for its next release.

Can be found in iPhone SDK>Contents>iPhoneSDK.dist. Not sure how far back in the betas this goes but it's in Beta 6.
function isgte106()
{
// 10.6 or above
if( system.compareVersions(my.target.systemVersion.ProductVersion, '10.6') >= 0 )
{
return true;
}

return false;
}
I figured this would be of interest because from what I recall, this is the first mention of 10.6 in a publicly available product. Everyone is talking 3G but nothing about 10.6. Here's hoping even a minor mention surfaces at WWDC in the coming weeks.

It's not really a big deal, it's quite obvious that Apple will eventually release a 10.6. They may very well go all the way to 10.9, although no prior version of Mac OS has ever had a point release higher than 7. (There was a Mac OS 7.7, and Mac OS 8.7 was rebadged as Mac OS 9.)

I think they will cling to that roman X for dear life and go up to 10.9.9 if necessary... they kind of painted themselves into a corner by making the X such a huge part of the branding.

I'm kinda thinking they will go for "11" rather than "XI"... I know which of the two any graphics designer would prefer to play around with when designing packaging etc.

No, they won't hang on to it forever. Even though "X" is cool and different, at the end of the day, Apple has always played it off as simply "version 10" of the Mac OS. I think they picked a Roman numeral because it signifies Unix.

I think the next major version release will also be called simply "Mac OS 11."

Who said there won't be a 10.10? It would be perfectly valid based on the current version scheme (10.4.10, 10.4.11 anyone?).

Given the significant changes in the 10.x releases, a switch to 11 would have to involve a HUGE change. Maybe even at the kernel level (or maybe even to a complete different platform).

Then again, there could be extremely little change at all, like when 8.7 suddenly became OS 9 (though there were economic reasons for that one).

Bah! Let's not beat around the bush here: it's going to be OS X until Steve Jobs (or perhaps his successor) is simply tired of the X. that alone would be reason enough.

That hits the nail on the head perfectly. Still, it'd be fun to have OS 11 just to get the marketing tagline: "This one goes to 11"

Not really a direct comparison, since the differene between 10.3 - 10.4 - 10.5 is more like the difference between OS 7 - OS 8 - OS 9.

In a sense, 10.5 is "really" OS 15.

If you're talking about OS 7.6 vs. 7.7 then the more direct comparison is 10.5.2 vs. 10.5.3. And those have already gone up to 11 in Tiger.

They should have put Tiger at 10.4.A

If anyone subscribes to the launchd mailing list ( which is open to anyone ) they would know Apple is working on 10A305.;)

There's a slim chance we may go from 10.5.3 to 10.6. Especially if the GUI changes over to multi-touch.
