Palm Releases webOS 1.2.1, Re-Enables iTunes Media Syncing

Gizmodo reports that Palm has released webOS 1.2.1, restoring iTunes media syncing ability to the Palm Pre. The release comes just days after the launch of webOS 1.2, which failed to re-enable iTunes syncing and also broke Exchange 2007 syncing for a number of users, necessitating the rapid follow-up update.

The USB Implementers Forum raised questions several weeks ago about Palm's apparent misuse of Apple's unique Vendor ID number to trick iTunes into recognizing the Pre as an iPod. While some had speculated after that disclosure and the release of webOS 1.2 that Palm had finally given up in the cat-and-mouse game with Apple over the iTunes syncing issue, that certainly appears not to be the case.

I'm getting so sick of this from Palm.

Make a decent phone, a decent OS, and your own syncing software that pairs with the iTunes library.

that the Apple lawyers will get involved soon. and I am guessing Apple will work on another update if noting else to stop them again!

It was cute at first, but is getting old quick. Palm needs to write its own solution like everyone else.

I'm definitely no software expert, but surely it's not difficult for Palm to make their own syncing program?

Isn't that what they have been doing all along? Just spoofing an iPod's vendor ID?

No, and as detailed in the article, first it was the product ID, then the Vendor ID, they got scolded by the USB-IF, and now it's the manufacturer ID. Plus they changed the Product ID again.

Umm they already have done that. They are just giving their uses another option instead of having to install and run more software on there computer.

They could even ague under USB-IF that they are not spoofing the ids to computer hardware and OS. It is only be spoof to certain software to get around blocks and it is only emulating it. Not changing what it really is.
