'CNN Mobile' Appears in App Store

CNN today announced that it has launched a new iPhone application, CNN Mobile [App Store, $1.99], bringing print and video news coverage, as well as integration with the news network's iReport feature that allows users to record and submit their own eyewitness accounts of news stories.

Maximizing the revolutionary features of iPhone OS 3.1, the new CNN App showcases news of the day through text, video and photos. It also features live breaking news video, push notification, localization and personalization tools, user-generated content capture and upload functionality through iReport, and more.

"The CNN App has what we think is one of the best user experiences around, and will quickly become an essential daily news source for many iPhone and iPod touch users,"said Louis Gump, vice president of CNN Mobile. "We tailored the best of CNN specifically for them, whether they check in from the beach, the airport or the ballpark."

The video streaming feature of CNN Mobile offers pre-recorded clips, but also allows CNN to send news alerts and provide live coverage when breaking news strikes. Personalization allows users to customize their application to deliver local news, weather, and traffic alongside world and national news, and the application also allows users to save text articles for offline viewing.

Integration with iReport allows users to not only browse user-generated content, but also to submit photos and video directly to the service. And finally, users are able to easily share stories with others via e-mail, SMS, Twitter and Facebook integration.

this is a excerpt from Downloadsquad.com

The most compelling feature, from by brieding and screen shots -- I wasn't allowed early access to the app itself -- is what Gump called, "Coverflow for news." A feature which lets users swipe through pictures and bullet points, looking for points of interest in the days popular headlines.

Positioned as a premium app, you'll have to fork over $1.99 for the goods, and tolerate just a wee bit of advertising mixed with your content. From what was relayed to me -- and I pressed -- none of the advertising sounds particularly intrusive, with a total lack of preroll video advertising, and sponsor adds appearing inline with, but visually separated from, the textual content.

Also on tap, breaking news alerts for interests you've defined, the ability to store news for later (airplane mode) and of course, social sharing on Facebook, Twitter and via email. And, when you get sick of reading the news, you can make the news -- via iReport -- with mobile uploads of video and images. "People in the field really do have access to the most compelling content, whether that be photo or video", which will be vetted as the current web version of iReport is, both by user filtering and "a small percentage" by human editors at CNN for airing on the network, or publishing on the main CNN site.

from what im seeing it looks very good im downloading the App as we speak

Kind of funny. In the Tweetie 2.0 thread I supported atebits on the right to charge an upgrade price but I'm a little concerned about this. They're charging for the app and it will have advertising? It had better be one heck of an app and the push notifications would have to be significantly better than AP's (though I'm not sure that I would care).

I agree. Video quality is very good. I'm hoping this app really offers live video streaming, at least during breaking news and not requiring wifi.

I just bought the app and it is pretty slick and it is right up there with NPR and the NY Times app. The ads are not nearly as intrusive. They're embedded within the page and not constantly there like the NYT (but then it is free). The iReport feature is slick as well as Coverflow. I'm curious as to how it will handle push notifications.
