Apple Maps Now Supports Transit in Paris

Apple Maps has been updated with transit data for Paris, enabling iPhone users in the city and the greater Île-de-France region to navigate with public transportation, including the subway, commuter trains, and buses. Apple Maps supports many public transportation services operated by the RATP Group, including the Métro subway system, RER commuter trains, and buses. Transilien trains and select other services are also supported in the suburbs. Apple Maps is several years behind Google Maps in supporting transit routing in Paris, as in many other cities, but Apple's public transportation support is comprehensive, mapping all station entrances and listing departure times. Apple Maps has had a Transit tab since iOS 9. At launch, the feature was limited to Baltimore, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sydney, Toronto, and over 300 cities in China. Since then, Apple has been working to expand support for public transportation to other cities around the world. Apple Maps has had a Transit tab since iOS 9, enabling iPhone users to navigate using buses, trains, and other forms of public transportation. At launch, the feature was limited to Baltimore, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Sydney, Toronto, and over 300 cities in China. Since then, Apple has been working to expand support for public transportation to other cities around the world. Newer additions include Atlanta, Columbus, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Honolulu, Houston, Kansas City, Manchester, Melbourne, Miami, Minneapolis–Saint Paul, Montréal, New Orleans, Portland, Pittsburgh, Prague, Rio de Janeiro, Sacramento, Salt Lake City, San Antonio, San Diego, Seattle, and Vancouver, B.C. Apple Maps Now Provides Transit Directions in Detroit and Windsor

Apple Maps has been updated with comprehensive transit data for the Detroit, Michigan metropolitan area, and for the Canadian city of Windsor, Ontario directly across the Detroit River, enabling users in both cities and certain suburbs to navigate using public transportation such as buses and trains. In the Metro Detroit area, Apple Maps routing supports DDOT and SMART buses, the Detroit People Mover, the Michigan Flyer, and Amtrak. Limited navigation extends to a number of Detroit suburbs in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne Counties, including Ann Arbor, Dearborn, Pontiac, Sterling Heights, and Warren. In the Windsor, Ontario area, Apple Maps routing supports Transit Windsor buses. Navigation extends to immediate suburbs in Essex County such as Tecumseh, Ontario. Tunnel Bus routing is also available for cross-border trips between Windsor and select locations in the Metro Detroit area. Apple Maps has been updated with comprehensive transit data for Great Britain, beyond the London area already supported. Transit directions by bus, train, or tram are now available within and between large metropolitan areas such as Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Sheffield, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Leeds, Bradford, Bristol, Portsmouth, Nottingham, and Cardiff, as well as other regions in England, Scotland, and Wales. Transit coverage extends to a number of mid-size cities, small towns, and rural areas as well. Directions are available between Bath and Brighton, for example, and most other searches between any two areas in England, Scotland, and Wales yielded at least one available route in Transit mode. Apple Maps now supports the National Rail network in many areas of Great Britain, including the CrossCountry, TransPennine Express, Great Western Railway, Grand Central, Northern Rail, East Midlands Trains, Virgin Trains, Virgin Trains East Coast, Arriva Trains Wales, Hull Trains, and other train services. Apple has recently updated Apple Maps to include Amtrak's full system of train routes across the United States and in select Canadian cities. Building upon support for northeast routes, Apple Maps now supports Amtrak routes in the Midwest, Northwest, South, and West regions of the U.S., and in the Canadian cities of Montréal and Vancouver. Apple Maps Expands Transit Data to San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth

Apple continues to build upon the transit coverage of Apple Maps, today adding the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex and the City of San Antonio to supported areas in Texas. The support marks the first expansion of transit coverage beyond the state's capital of Austin. In Dallas and Fort Worth, Apple will now offer up several city transit routes, including transportation by the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) light rail commuter service, streetcar and bus lines, and the Skylink at DFW Airport. In San Antonio, coverage is concentrated within the Connolly Loop (Interstate 410), and takes in the city's VIA Metropolitan Transit system. Transit directions were first added to Apple Maps in 2015 as part of iOS 9. At launch, transit information was only available in a handful of cities, but Apple has been working hard to expand the feature to additional locations. Apple Maps Transit Directions Expand to Prague, Czech Republic

Apple continues to slowly expand the transit functionality of Apple Maps, today adding Prague, Czech Republic as the third city in Europe behind London and Berlin to be supported. Apple Maps transit data in Prague includes the Prague Metro and Esko Prague commuter rail, as well as local trams and buses and even Czech Railways' seasonal Cyklohráček "excursion train" targeting cyclists and families. Prior to today's expansion to Prague, Apple last week added transit information for San Diego, California and areas of British Columbia, Canada including Vancouver and Victoria. Apple Maps transit data is now available in roughly two dozen metropolitan areas scattered around the world, with an additional concentration of cities in China visible to users only when in the country. Apple Maps Expands Transit Data to San Diego and British Columbia

Apple recently updated its Maps app to include transit information in San Diego, California and British Columbia, Canada allowing iOS users in those locations to incorporate public transportation options when seeking directions through the Apple Maps app. In San Diego, Apple Maps will now offer up routes that include transportation by the city's Trolley, which connects the east and south counties with the Downtown area. The Trolley is San Diego's light rail system and sole public transportation option besides buses. Transit Directions Expand to UK National Rail, Atlanta and Miami

Ahead of the 2016 Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple's Maps team is working hard to expand transit directions to additional locations. Starting this morning, transit information in the United Kingdom has expanded to encompass the National Rail, which represents several public transportation systems across Great Britain. In the United States, transit directions are now available in Atlanta and Miami. In Atlanta, Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) routes are available, and in Miami, directions are now able to encompass Metrobus, Metrorail, and Metromover routes. Apple also appears to have expanded transit directions in California to encompass Santa Cruz, Monterey, Salinas, and other surrounding areas. When transit directions launched in 2015 as part of iOS 9, they were only available in a handful of cities, but Apple has now expanded availability to more than 20 locations around the world. In time for the 2016 Summer Olympics, Apple Maps now supports transit routing in Rio de Janeiro, the second most populous city in Brazil. Transit directions are available for travel by bus, ferry, metro, and train throughout the Rio de Janeiro metropolitan area, including connections to and from Belford Roxo, Duque de Caxias, Itaboraí, Japeri, Magé, Mesquita, Nilópolis, Niterói, Nova Iguaçu, Queimados, São Gonçalo, and São João de Meriti. Supported transit operators include Internorte, Intersul, Metrô Rio, SuperVia, and others. Rio de Janeiro is the fifth new city to support Apple Maps transit over the past month, alongside Austin, Montréal, Portland, and Seattle. Apple Maps Expands Transit Data in New South Wales, Australia With TrainLink and Bus Routes

Apple Maps has recently been updated with all-new transit data for New South Wales, Australia, allowing iOS users to navigate the area with the new addition of the NSW TrainLink line as well as bus stations. Before the update, only rail directions for Sydney Trains were available. Sydney, and now New South Wales as a whole, are still the only areas in Australia with Transit information available. The new transit additions should help tourists out, as well, since New South Wales also houses the popular destination -- and most populous city in the nation -- Sydney, Australia.
