Echoing a previous report indicating that Apple's sales numbers and marketshare are on the rise, IDC reported that worldwide PC shipments were up by more than 17% this past quarter.

With it Apple saw a 44.6% increase year-over-year. Raising its US marketshare percentage from 3.3% to 4.3% based on IDC's numbers.

Investor's Business Daily attributes this rise in marketshare to a "halo effect" from the iPod spilling over into Macintosh sales.

Information about two of the new Apple Products introduced on October 19th has been reported. These price points appear to be $1999 and $2999.

Based on previous rumors/speculation, it appears PowerBooks and PowerMacs are expected.

The October 24th Time Magazine issue features Steve Jobs on the Cover holding a Video iPod and an iMac with the words "What's Next". (The article is available to subscribers, but is also available in full at TimeCanada).

In it, Jobs talks about how and why Apple continues to be innovative in this industry. He points to their product development cycle as "deep collaboration" or "concurrent engineering". Products don't pass from team to team. Instead products are developed in parallel by all departments "in endless rounds of interdisciplinary design reviews".

Jobs also places emphasis on control. Through controlling the hardware and software, integration can be more seamless. This also reduces your dependance on third party companies. The iPod, iTunes, iTunes Music store is an example of this control and integration.

The product now is the iTunes Music Store and iTunes and the iPod and the software that goes on the iPod. A lot of companies don't really have control, or they can't really work in a collaborative way to truly make a system. We're really about a system.

Jobs also provides more insight into his opinion about the new video capabilities of the iPod:

"There is no market today for portable video," he says. "We're going to sell millions of these to people who want to play their music, and video is going to come along for the ride. Anyone who wants to put out video content will put it out for this. And we'll find out what happens."

The latest invitation-only event will be held in New York City on October 19, 2005 on the eve of PhotoPlus Expo. Apple doesn't say exactly what the press conference will be about, but the invitation sent to MacCentral asks to join them as "we unveil Apple's latest pro innovations."

This will be the third special product focused event that Apple has held in just over a month. On September 7, Apple launched the iPod nano and just this week they unveiled the video iPod and new iMac.

The event was previously rumored for release of updates to the Power Mac and Powerbook lines.

Appleinsider provides a report in which they describe the much anticipated PowerBook and PowerMac updates.

According to the rumor site, the PowerBook G4 updates have been delayed due to several small issues. At the heart of the PowerBook updates are updated display resolutions for High Definition displays, DDR2 memory, larger hard drives, and a new chipset. Processor speed may not be upgraded at all with this PowerBook revision. The date for the update is reported to be October 19th.

PowerMacs are also expected, possibly on the same day. The systems are expected to be based on the Dual Core IBM 970MP processor which was announced in July. The new PowerMacs are said to feature Dual processors (for a total of 4 processor cores), PCI-E, and dual-layer SuperDrives.
Update: ThinkSecret reports with similar claims. They report that three PowerMac configurations are due next week. The top end is expected to top $3000 with dual Dual-Core PowerPC 970MP processors. DDR2 and PCI-Express are also mentioned, but few new details are available.

With regard to there only being 5 TV Shows presently available on iTunes, Apple's Greg Joswiak explains that they only told the one network (ABC).

"You see that we have the top two shows on TV, as well as the top shows on the Disney Channel. We couldn't really start off with a better foot forward. This is just the beginning."

Meanwhile, Apple's David Moody, confirms that "at this time [Front Row is] only on the iMac as part of the integrated hardware software solution".

Apple's "One more thing" Media Event took place today with much anticipation. The event saw the release of new Video-capable iPods, and a new iMac.

A few notes on the event itself... It took place at the California Theater in San Jose, CA. Apple has always been very secretive about their media events. Whether by design or by coincidence, the location for today's event prevented wireless or even cell phone usage thwarting many sites attempts at reporting on the event. The event was also fed to the BBC Television Center by satellite. This location had less stringent measures in place. Much of the information gathered during the event has to be credited to MacNews.de and Stuff Magazine, both reporting from this location.

Early rumors by Appleinsider turned out to be the most accurate. The Video enabled iPod introduced today was very similar to their initial report. Also accurately reported was the introduction of music videos and short movie content through an iTunes update.

Of interest, in the same report, Appleinsider reported that a new Apple wireless device was in the wings... similar to Apple's AirPort Express but with Video-Out capability. Such a device was not introduced today, but may be in our future based on this report.

Meanwhile, ThinkSecret initially discounted the possibility of a Video iPod. They later amended their report at the last minute to include that possibility. Meanwhile, a final report this morning suggested that while Apple's launch today focused on broadcast video, Apple's future plans do include a proper "Movie Store" with a corresponding Widescreen iPod to be introduced in 2006.

But what of the promised PowerBook and PowerMac updates? ThinkSecret still promises these updates "either later this week or early next". While this may not instill us with a great deal of confidence, there have been independent reports that Dual-Core PowerMacs are imminent.

A few interesting notes from the day's events

- The new iPod appears to have the same Height/Width as the old iPods (4.1 x 2.4 inches), despite their wider appearance.
- Apple's FrontRow media interface is only available on the iMac, but appears to be Apple's first step into the Media Center-like devices/interfaces. This is an area that Microsoft has been aggressively pursuing. Historically, Steve Jobs has been against convergence between TV and computers... however, the introduction of TV downloads may change this perspective. Steve Jobs also has made comments against Video playback devices. At present the FrontRow interface is meant to be viewed on the iMac and not through a television.
- Eminem is featured in a silhouette iPod/iTunes ad. His publisher previously sued Apple for using a song without permission.
- U2 iPod appears to be discontinued.
- Only 5 different TV Shows available at this time. Digital Rights Management is the same as iTunes songs. 5 different computers. Downloaded episodes are .m4v format, 320x240 pixels, AAC Audio. 650kbits/sec. About 200 megs per hour-long episode.

ThinkSecret backsteps with an article reporting that a Video iPod may indeed be debuting tomorrow at Apple's October 12th Media Event.

ThinkSecret previously reported that tomorrow's event would bring 40GB/80GB iPods as well as Powerbook and PowerMac updates... but no Video iPod.

The rumor site amends its previous report with notes that the iPod updates may instead be 30GB/60GB iPods with video playback ability. They are quick to point out that video playback may only focus on music videos, podcasts and possibly TV, but unlikely to feature full length films. (at first).

Meanwhile, one unconfirmed blog post reports that "a popular video blog" has been asked by Apple to be used during Apple's presentation tomorrow... suggesting that Video playback will featured at the event.

The highly anticipated event will take place at 10:00 a.m. PT, Oct 12th, at the California Theatre in San Jose, CA.

Apple's own Executive Vice President Tim Cook told us that there would be new iPods to be released before the end of the year at today's Financial conference call:

"Over a year ago, we set out to create revolutionary updates to our core iPod lineup," Cook said. "Last quarter was the final quarter for the older products. We think we did rather well with the prior lineup and believe that we will do even better with the new lineup that we have for the holiday season, including the new iPod Nano and some very innovative new products that we have yet to introduce."
