Apple refreshed the MacBook Pro lineup in October 2026, adding a base M6 14-inch MacBook Pro and higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch M5 Pro and M5 Max models with PROLED touchscreen displays. Since the lineup was just updated, now is a good time to buy.

Apple is still selling the M5 Pro and M5 Max 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with mini-LED displays that were introduced in March 2026, so you can get the MacBook Pro with mini-LED or OLED.

If you want a smaller-sized Mac with a better display and faster chip than the MacBook Air, you can get the 14-inch M6 mini-LED MacBook Pro starting at $1,999. Apple also sells 14-inch and 16-inch mini-LED MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips for those who need more CPU and GPU performance. Pricing on the 14-inch M5 Pro model starts at $2,499, while pricing for the 16-inch M5 Pro model with mini-LED starts at $2,999.

The OLED touchscreen models also come in 14-inch and 16-inch size options with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, but there is a premium for the new display technology. The 14-inch model starts at $2,899 and the 16-inch model starts at $3,399.

If you don't need the performance capabilities of the MacBook Pro, the port options, or features like the mini-LED display, you'll want to consider Apple's more affordable MacBook Air models instead, or the cheapest MacBook option, the MacBook Neo.

In October 2026, Apple updated the base 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M6 chip and debuted new high-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with PROLED XDR touchscreen displays. The PROLED MacBook Pro models are being sold alongside the mini-LED MacBook Pro models. All of the higher-end models use the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chips.

The PROLED MacBook Pro models have a refreshed design with a thinner, lighter build and the return of the glowing Apple logo. With slimmed down display bezels, the PROLED 16-inch MacBook Pro has a larger 16.3-inch display, while the 14-inch model still has a 14.2-inch display. Smaller bezels, a thinner design, and the new Apple logo are exclusive to the PROLED models, as the mini-LED models haven't been updated since March 2026 and have the same standard MacBook Pro design.

All MacBook Pro models come in space black or silver aluminum and feature large trackpads and full-sized keyboards.

The M6 chip has a 12-core CPU and 12-core GPU, and it is only used in the base 14-inch MacBook Pro. Higher-end models use the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips with up to an 18-core CPU and up to a 40-core GPU. All of the chips support hardware-based ray tracing and mesh shading for better gaming performance, along with an increase in memory bandwidth and dedicated Neural Accelerators for each GPU core.

Apple's M6 chip is built on a new 2nm process, and it has a dual 16-core Neural Engine with up to 1.9x faster performance compared to M5 and Neural Accelerators. It supports up to 32GB unified memory and features a third-generation ray-tracing engine. It supports up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth.

Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max chips include a 16-core Neural Engine for powering on-device Apple Intelligence features and machine learning tasks. The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB unified memory and the M5 Max supports up to 128GB unified memory. The M5 Pro offers 307GB/s memory bandwidth, and the M5 Max features up to 614GB/s memory bandwidth.

The October 2026 MacBook Pro models have a PROLED XDR display with up to 1000 nits sustained brightness, up to 2000 nits peak brightness, 1 nit minimum brightness, a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and a wider color gamut that covers P3 and Adobe RGB. The 14-inch PROLED MacBook Pro has a 14.2-inch display with a 3024-by-1986 resolution, while the 16-inch model has a 16.3-inch display with a 3472-by-2266 resolution. Nano-texture is available as an option to reduce glare.

The notch has been replaced with a Dynamic Island that houses Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI, and there is an integrated touch sensor for touch capabilities. The PROLED MacBook Pro supports touch gestures like swiping through a webpage, pinching to zoom in on a photo, and dragging and dropping. Touch gestures work in tandem with keyboard shortcuts and trackpad gestures.

Apple added a redesigned hinge that adds more stability when touching the display and advanced video stabilization keeps the camera steady in real-time when using touch on a video call.

The mini-LED models have a Liquid Retina XDR display with 1000 nits SDR brightness outdoors, up to 1000 nits sustained XDR brightness, 1600 nits peak brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The 14-inch MacBook Pro has a resolution of 3024-by-1964 at 254 pixels per inch, and the 16-inch model has a resolution of 3456-by-2234 at 254 pixels per inch. Apple did not change the design of the mini-LED MacBook Pro, and it continues to have a notch.

Apple's PROLED models have slimmer bezels at the sides and top of the MacBook Pro's display with a small cutout for the 12-megapixel webcam that supports Center Stage and Desk View. The mini-LED has the same webcam, and both the mini-LED and PROLED models offer ProMotion technology, which supports adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz and True Tone, which shifts the white balance of the display to match the lighting in the room.

The PROLED MacBook Pro models are thinner and lighter than the mini-LED models, but the keyboard and trackpad are the same. There's an all-black keyboard with a full-sized row of function keys, along with a Touch ID button with a circular fingerprint sensor. Touch ID is used to unlock the Mac, authenticate purchases, and replace passwords. Below the keyboard, there's a large Force Touch trackpad. The PROLED MacBook Pro models have a glowing Apple logo, while the mini-LED models have a plain silver Apple logo.

The 14-inch PROLED MacBook Pro weighs three pounds, and it is a half pound lighter than the mini-LED model. The 16-inch PROLED model weighs four pounds, so it is 0.7 pounds lighter than the equivalent mini-LED model. The 16-inch PROLED model is nearly a millimeter thinner than the mini-LED model, and the 14-inch PROLED model is nearly half a millimeter thinner.

Apple redesigned the thermal architecture of the PROLED models to keep the same M5 Pro and M5 Max performance in a lighter design while redirecting warm air away from the display.

The M6 MacBook Pro has three Thunderbolt 4 ports, while all M5 Pro and M5 Max models have three Thunderbolt 5 ports. Other ports include an SDXC card slot, an HDMI 2.1 port, a 3.5mm headphone jack with support for high-impedance headphones, and a MagSafe 3 port that supports a fast charging feature delivering a 50 percent charge within 30 minutes.

The 16-inch MacBook Pro uses a 140W power adapter while the 14-inch models ship with either a 70W or 96W power adapter depending on chip configuration, and all of the MacBook Pro models can charge over either USB-C or MagSafe.

The M6 MacBook Pro supports up to a 4TB SSD, the mini-LED MacBook Pro models support up to an 8TB SSD, and the PROLED MacBook Pro models support up to 16TB.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 chip lasts for up to 24 hours when streaming video and 16 hours when browsing the web. Both 14-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro last for up to 22 hours when streaming video and up to 14 hours when browsing the web, while the M5 Max models last for up to 20 hours when streaming video and 13 hours when browsing the web.

On the 16-inch MacBook Pro, models with the M5 Pro chip last for up to 24 hours while streaming video and up to 17 hours while browsing the web. Models with the M5 Max chip get up to 22 hours while streaming video and up to 16 hours while browsing the web.

Other features include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 thanks to Apple's N1 networking chip. The MacBook Pro models also include a six-speaker sound system with two tweeters, four force-canceling woofers, and wide stereo sound. The PROLED models have an updated speaker system with 50 percent deeper bass.

The PROLED MacBook Pro models feature the first redesign of the MacBook Pro since 2021. Both the 14-inch and 16-inch sizes are thinner than before, but come in the same silver and space black aluminum color options.

There are thinner bezels at the top and sides, a Dynamic Island with the front camera that replaces the notch, an all-black keyboard with Touch ID, a large Force Touch trackpad, speaker grilles next to the keyboard, and ports at the left and right sides.

The 14-inch PROLED MacBook Pro is 12.24 inches wide, 8.52 inches deep, and 0.59 inches thick. The M5 Pro version weighs 3 pounds, and the M5 Max version weighs 3.1 pounds. The 16-inch PROLED MacBook Pro is 14 inches wide, 9.62 inches deep, and 0.63 inches thick. The M5 Pro version weighs 4 pounds, and the M5 Max version weighs 4.1 pounds. The 14-inch mini-LED model weighs 3.5 pounds, and the 16-inch mini-LED version weighs 4.7 pounds.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro is half a millimeter thinner than the mini-LED version, and the 16-inch model is nearly a millimeter thinner. Apple designed a reinforced hinge that keeps the display more stable when touching it.

Apple reintroduced the glowing Apple logo on the PROLED MacBook Pro machines, and that is the main way to distinguish the mini-LED model from the PROLED model. Mini-LED MacBook Pros have a shiny silver logo that does not light up. The glow of the logo is tied to the display brightness, getting brighter when the display gets brighter and vice versa, but there is an option to turn it off. Since the PROLED MacBook Pro doesn't have a backlight, Apple added a dedicated light just for the logo.

Apple redesigned the thermal architecture in the PROLED MacBook Pro to redirect warm air away from the touch display while also maintaining the same sustained performance of the M5 Pro and M5 Max.

Keyboard and Trackpad

The PROLED MacBook Pro models feature the same all-black keyboard base that was used in prior models. There is a full-sized row of function keys along with a large Escape key on the left side. The right side features a power button with a circular Touch ID fingerprint reader.

All of the keys are backlit and adjust based on the lighting in the room thanks to an ambient light sensor.

Below the keyboard, there's a large Force Touch trackpad that is unchanged from prior models. The Force Touch trackpad has no traditional buttons and is powered by a set of force sensors, allowing users to press anywhere on the trackpad to get the same response. A Taptic Engine powered by magnets gives users tactile feedback when using the trackpad, replacing the feel of a physical button press.

The Force Touch trackpad supports a light press, which is used as a regular click, along with a deeper press or "force click" as a separate gesture that does things like offer up definitions for a highlighted word.

Ports

The PROLED MacBook Pro models feature a selection of ports for connecting displays and peripherals, and charging.

All 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models include a UHS-II SDXC card slot, an HDMI 2.1 port that supports multichannel audio output and a 4K display at up to 240Hz or an 8K display at up to 60Hz, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

There are three Thunderbolt 5 ports that support speeds of up to 120Gb/s.

There is a dedicated MagSafe port and an accompanying braided MagSafe cable for charging. MagSafe offers a breakaway design that allows the cable to easily disconnect if it's pulled, preventing damage to the port or machine.

The latest MacBook Pro models use a PROLED XDR Display with touch capabilities, both of which are a first in the Mac line. The PROLED XDR Display uses tandem OLED technology, which means it has multiple layers to increase brightness.

Apple says the panel has "deep innovations in its layers" for uniform brightness and grayscale with minimal internal reflections that affect traditional OLED displays. The panel design, display engine, and factory calibration process combine to offer "exceptional brightness, striking contrast, and vivid true-to-life colors" according to Apple.

The 14-inch PROLED MacBook Pro has a 14.2-inch display with a 3024 x 1986 resolution at 254 pixels per inch. The 16-inch PROLED MacBook Pro model has a larger 16.3-inch display with a 3472 x 2266 resolution at 254 pixels per inch.

The OLED display features a 10,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 1 nit minimum brightness, XDR brightness up to 1,000 nits sustained or 2,000 nits peak brightness for HDR content, and SDR brightness up to 1,000 nits sustained or 2,000 nits peak when outdoors.

The display supports 1 billion colors, and it offers P3 and Adobe RGB wide color gamuts with more than 80 percent Rec. 2020 coverage. True Tone, a feature that matches the white balance of the display to the ambient lighting in the room, is supported. Apple devices have used True Tone for years, and it makes viewing a Mac's screen easier on the eyes because it takes into account outside lighting and color temperature.

The MacBook Pro models support ProMotion technology for adaptive refresh rates up to 120Hz. When viewing a static webpage that doesn't require a high refresh rate, the MacBook Pro's display adopts a lower refresh rate (down to 10Hz) to preserve battery life, but when gaming, scrolling, or doing other activities where a higher refresh rate is needed for smoother content, the higher frame rates kick in.

There is a fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating along with an anti-reflective coating to cut down on glare, but Apple also offers a $150 option to upgrade to nano-texture glass with a matte finish to further minimize reflections.

According to Apple, the display engine controls the color and luminance of each pixel at the sub-millisecond level to compensate for content, pixel use, temperature, and environment for uniform brightness. The engine monitors and adapts each pixel's usage over time to "preserve stunning image quality."

Touch

The MacBook Pro is the first Mac with touch, and the touch sensor is built directly into the display panel. Touch on the Mac is similar to touch on the iPhone or iPad, so you can scroll through webpages, pinch to zoom in on photos, tap on buttons and controls, drag and drop content from one window to another, and more.

Most existing Mac apps work with touch automatically, but touch is an add-on and not a main input method. It's meant to be used alongside traditional inputs like the trackpad and keyboard shortcuts.

macOS automatically translates touches into clicks, and updated system gesture APIs let developers create touch-first experiences. Apple also added some accommodations for touch. Items on menu bars display farther apart when touched than they do if you use a mouse, and buttons expand so they're easier to tap.

Apple uses software to keep the image stable on a video call when the MacBook Pro's display is touched.

While the display supports touch, it does not work with the Apple Pencil.

Dynamic Island

Instead of a notch, the PROLED MacBook Pro models adopt the iPhone's Dynamic Island. The Dynamic Island takes up less display area, and it houses Spotlight, Live Activities, and Siri AI.

The Dynamic Island shows much of the same information as the Dynamic Island on the iPhone, like timers, incoming phone calls, and music controls. With touch, information in the Dynamic Island is easy to interact with.

The PROLED MacBook Pro models use Apple's M5 Pro and M5 Max chips, built using third-generation 3-nanometer technology.

All M5 chips feature updated GPUs, and each GPU core includes a Neural Accelerator that improves the speeds of GPU-based AI workloads. Apple also added third-generation ray-tracing, second-generation dynamic caching, and enhanced shader cores for improved graphics capabilities.

There's an improved 16-core Neural Engine that's more energy efficient, and a powerful media engine. Apple updated unified memory bandwidth across all chips for faster performance. Unified memory architecture allows the entire chip to use a single pool of memory for running AI models on-device, improving multithreaded performance in apps, boosting GPU performance in creative apps and games, and more.

The M5 Pro and M5 Max chips have a new Apple-designed Fusion Architecture with a multi-die design that combines two dies into a single system on a chip (SoC). The chips feature an up to 18-core CPU architecture, with up to six super cores. There are also up to 12 performance cores optimized for power efficiency.

On Geekbench, the M5 Max chip in the MacBook Pro earned a single-core score of 4,268 and a multi-core score of 29,233. CPU performance was benchmarked at 15 percent faster than the M4 machines, while GPU performance was 20 percent faster. The M5 Max MacBook Pro earned a Metal score of 232,718.

There are two variants of the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips with different CPU and GPU configurations. The M5 Pro MacBook Pro is available with a 15-core CPU and 16-core GPU or an 18-core CPU with 20-core GPU.

The M5 Max MacBook Pro is available with an 18-core CPU and 32-core GPU or 18-core CPU and 40-core GPU.

The M5 Pro MacBook Pro models feature 307GB/s memory bandwidth. The M5 Max with 32-core GPU has 460GB/s memory bandwidth, while the 40-core GPU model has 614GB/s memory bandwidth.

Media Engine

Apple includes a media engine in its Apple silicon chips to speed up video processing while preserving battery life. The M5 chips offer dedicated acceleration for the ProRes video codec, along with video encode/decode engines and hardware accelerated support for H.264, HEVC, AV1 (decode only), ProRes, and ProRes RAW.

The M5 Max has the same capabilities, but it includes two video encode engines and two ProRes encode and decode engines for even faster performance for pro tasks.

Memory

The M5 Pro and M5 Max use a system-on-a-chip architecture with unified memory. The M5 Pro starts with 24GB, and the M5 Max starts with 36GB.

The M5 Pro supports up to 64GB unified memory and the M5 Max supports up to 128GB unified memory.

Neural Engine

There's a 16-core Neural Engine built into the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips that handles Apple Intelligence and machine learning acceleration and boosts camera performance alongside the custom image signal processor, plus there's a display engine that can drive multiple external displays.

Display Support

The M5 Pro supports up to three external displays at 6K 60Hz or 4K 165Hz. Alternatively, it supports one display at 8K 60Hz or 5K 120Hz or 4K 240Hz as well as a second display up to a native resolution of 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 200Hz.

The M5 Max supports up to four external displays, with four at up to 6K 60Hz or 4K 165Hz. Alternatively, it supports up to two external displays with 8K resolution at 60Hz or 5K at 120Hz or 4K at 240Hz.

There are additional integrated Thunderbolt controllers for more I/O bandwidth, and a built-in Secure Enclave includes features like hardware-verified secure-boot and runtime anti-exploitation features.

Speakers

There's an upgraded six-speaker sound system in the PROLED MacBook Pro with a new woofer design for 50 percent deeper bass. There are new tweeters that Apple says "shape sound dispersion for remarkable clarity."

The speaker system supports wide stereo sound, and the MacBook Pro offers support for spatial audio when playing music or video with Dolby Atmos on the built-in speakers. When connected to AirPods, AirPods Pro, or AirPods Max, dynamic head tracking is supported.

The PROLED models feature dedicated audio tuning for closed-lid use, improving audio when using the device with an external display.

There's also a three-microphone array that supports a high signal-to-noise ratio for capturing even subtle sounds. Directional beamforming allows for clear voice sound.

SSDs

The MacBook Pro models feature SSDs with up to 16TB of storage space available. Apple upgraded SSD speeds and the SSDs in the M5 models are up to 2× faster than the SSDs in the prior-generation models.

The M5 Pro models start with 1TB of storage, while the M5 Max models start with 2TB.

Camera

There is a 12-megapixel camera in the MacBook Pro, which is powered by the image signal processor built into the M5 chips. The image signal processor makes sure images are sharp, and allows for natural-looking skin tones, and there's also the option to use an iPhone as a webcam.

The camera supports Center Stage for keeping you in frame, and it works with Desk View, so you can show what's on your physical desk in front of you if needed on a video call.

Display Calibrator

The MacBook Pro display can be calibrated to specified targets with Apple Pro Display Calibrator, and there are industry-standard reference modes available for cinematic standards, photography, print, and design. DICOM medical imaging reference modes are also available for non-diagnostic use.

Wireless Connectivity

The PROLED MacBook Pro models support 802.11be Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, Bluetooth 6, and Thread because Apple included its N1 networking chip.

Apple says the N1 offers improved performance and reliability for wireless connections.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro chip last for up to 22 hours when streaming video or up to 14 hours when browsing the web.

The 14-inch M5 Max MacBook Pro lasts for up to 20 hours when streaming video or up to 13 hours when browsing the web. All 14-inch models have a 72.6-watt-hour battery.

Apple's 16-inch MacBook Pro models with M5 Pro chip last for up to 24 hours when streaming video and 17 hours when browsing the web, while the M5 Max lasts for up to 22 hours when streaming video or 16 hours when browsing the web. The 16-inch MacBook Pro models are equipped with a 100-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery.

16-inch MacBook Pro models with the M5 chip family are able to fast charge with MagSafe or USB-C when using a 240W USB-C cable and the 140W power adapter that comes with the device.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro models can fast charge with a 96W USB-C power adapter, though models equipped with the base M5 Pro ship with a 70W adapter by default. Fast charging gives a 50 percent charge in about 30 minutes.

There are several stock configurations of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. These are models that are in stock at Apple retail locations and do not require build-to-order updates.

The PROLED MacBook Pro models are $400 more than their mini-LED counterparts across the lineup.

14-inch PROLED MacBook Pro Models

Build-to-Order Options

The M-series chip, RAM, and SSD can be upgraded for many of the MacBook Pro models. Build-to-order options come at an additional cost, and must be special ordered from Apple.

There's also a $150 nano-texture display add-on that reduces glare.

Apple is still selling the mini-LED MacBook Pro models alongside the newer PROLED models. The mini-LED models have the prior-generation design and use mini-LED display technology instead of OLED.

Design

The mini-LED MacBook Pro models use the 2021 design, so they are thicker, heavier, and have thicker bezels. The 14-inch mini-LED model is 12.31 inches wide, 8.71 inches deep, 0.61 inches thick, and it weighs 3.4 pounds with the M6 chip, 3.5 pounds with the M5 Pro chip, and 3.57 pounds with the M5 Max chip.

The 16-inch model measures 14.01 inches wide, 9.77 inches deep, and 0.66 inches thick. It weighs 4.7 pounds (2.14 kg) with the M5 Pro chip or M5 Max chip.

The mini-LED models have a notch instead of a Dynamic Island, but feature the same large Force Touch trackpad, backlit keyboard, and port options, with the exception of the M6 MacBook Pro. The M6 model has three Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports, while all other models include three Thunderbolt 5 ports.

Display

The mini-LED MacBook Pro models are equipped with a "Liquid Retina XDR" (Extreme Dynamic Range) display. The 16-inch MacBook Pro features a 16.2-inch display with a 3456-by-2234 native resolution at 254 pixels per inch.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro includes a 14.2-inch display with a 3024-by-1964 native resolution at 254 pixels per inch. Both are using mini-LED technology with 1,000 nits sustained XDR brightness and 1,600 nits peak brightness, with a contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1 and 1-nit minimum brightness. The displays offer support for 1 billion colors, along with P3 wide color for bright, true-to-life colors.

When displaying SDR content, the display can deliver a peak brightness of 1,000 nits in outdoor light.

True Tone, P3 wide color, and 120Hz ProMotion refresh rates are supported. Nano-texture is available as an upgrade option.

M-Series Chips

The higher-end 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models have the same M5 Pro and M5 Max chip options as the PROLED MacBook Pro models.

The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro has an M6 chip, built on a 2nm process. The M6 chip has a 12-core CPU, 12-core GPU, and supports 16GB to 32GB of unified memory. The CPU offers up to 1.2x faster multithreaded performance than the M5. Graphics are up to 30 percent faster, and AI workloads are up to 25 percent faster. There's a dual 16-core Neural Engine and up to 170GB/s memory bandwidth.

The M6 supports two external displays at 6K resolution at up to 60Hz, or one external display at 8K resolution up to 60Hz or one display at 4K resolution at 240Hz.

Connectivity

Like the PROLED models, the mini-LED models support Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Battery

The mini-LED models have the same battery life as the PROLED models. The M6 14-inch MacBook Pro lasts for up to 24 hours when streaming video.

14-inch Mini-LED MacBook Pro Models
