Apple Temporarily Rerouting Employee Shuttles Due to Ongoing Vandalism

Apple runs several shuttle buses to transport its employees from San Francisco down to Cupertino each day, and recently someone has been attacking those shuttle buses, leading to broken windows.

An employee who spoke to Mashable said that several shuttles have suffered from broken windows, and on an internal email thread, there was speculation that it could be due to "rubber rounds" fired at the buses. There have been at least four reports of broken windows on January 12 and January 16.

As a result, Apple began rerouting shuttles starting on Wednesday, adding 30 to 45 minutes to the commute from the city to Cupertino. Employees were informed about the route change on Tuesday night in an email obtained by Mashable.
Due to recent incidents of broken windows along the commute route, specifically on highway 280, we're re-routing coaches for the time being. This change in routes could mean an additional 30-45 minutes of commute time in each direction for some riders.

As always, the safety of our employees is our first priority. We're working closely with law enforcement to investigate these incidents and we'll notify you as soon as the coaches are able to return to the regular route. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
For the time being, Apple shuttles will avoid highway 280 as Apple works with the California Highway Patrol to figure out what's going on. At the current time, it's not known what was being used to shatter the windows of the shuttle buses, with the CHP attributing the broken windows to an "unknown object."

Apple shuttles have, in the past, been the target of protestors frustrated by the tech industry's impact on affordable housing and the cost of living in the Bay Area.

Looks like Apple isn't the only one hating Windows.

Good thing you're letting everyone know they're rerouting the shuttles so the protestors can go find and vandalize them on the new route!

Maybe Apple should try growing their workforce in other locations that aren't the SF Bay Area. Maybe some US locations that aren't on the coasts... there are some amazingly smart, talented people in the Midwest. Just a thought.

If the criminals can't afford housing, it's time they relocate out of state. There's no need to attack workers in the tech industries.

Except none of the tech workers want to move there. I don’t really get the fascination with the Bay Area either, but that’s where everyone seems to want to go. Oh and if they lose their job/want a new one they can go to any of the other hundreds of companies in the Bay Area compared to almost nothing in the Midwest.

Sounds like a pretty serious situation
I hope they get it sorted quickly without any injuries and that people can resume their lives without such madness

"Desirable" is highly subjective. I'm sure many incredibly-talented people would say that they have no desire to live in Silicon Valley, that whole Bay Area is a cesspool, and that its talent pool is overrated.

I'm not suggesting that Apple relocate the company, just that they might benefit from building R&D facilities in places that aren't the same old places.

It's baffling that there are people in this thread who are even remotely suggesting there would be an acceptable reason for someone to attack a bus, whether it be with a gun, a rock, or whatever.

I beg to differ.
Most desirable? Seriously?
The cost of living there is ridiculous!
Good luck finding a decent house that is under 7 digits around that area.

You do realize you just disproved your own point right? Lol. The reason houses are that expensive is BECAUSE it’s desirable, not the other way around. If people didn’t want to live here, it wouldn’t be so expensive. To people who complain about Cali being expensive I tell them one thing: you get what you pay for. You want cheap, live in Mississippi.

This isn't an angry mob of protestors, it's likely one person with a BB gun (actually one theory was a normal gun firing rubber rounds, that sounds plausible), somewhere along the route. I don't expect that one guy will be too surprised by the change. MacRumors is reporting it, yes, but so are dozens of other media outlets - complaining about MacRumors is yelling at the tide. Better to move to a route with fewer places to hide, make the shooter relocate, and have the police try to catch the shooter. To be clear, the problem here isn't MacRumors, it's a person with a gun.

Your solution to one bad guy with a gun is "move to another state"? Really? How about just find and arrest the bad guy?
