Apple's Mac OS 10.5 Leopard launch will go down in history as record-breaking, both internal and external. In Japan, sales went up to 60.5% market share year-on year in the month of October, which was enough to bump Microsoft from the top spot (reports Macworld.co.uk citing a Japanese Business Computer News report)

In the six days after Leopard's 26 October launch, combined single-user licence (46 per cent) and family pack (7.9 per cent) sales accounted for 53.9 per cent of the total OS-only market in Japan.

However, at Microsoft, Windows sales fell from 75.3 per cent to 28.7 per cent

Apple had already indicated that the Leopard launch was highly successful, with two million copies sold in the first weekend alone.

ThinkSecret believes that Apple is about ready to release the first update to Mac OS X Leopard.

Mac OS X 10.5.1 has been undergoing testing by developers over the past two weeks, and ThinkSecret claims that it has been finalized at build 9B18. The last build made available to developers was 9B16 and was released seeded earlier this week. There were no known issues at that time.

The update is expected to simply provide stability, compatibility, and security improvements for Leopard.

Updatex2: Apple has seeded build 9B16 9B18 to developers. The latest build has no known issues and provides fixes for NetworkBrowser and Application Firewall.

Apple posted a 1.2.2 iPod update for owners of 5th generation iPods today via iTunes. No details on what specific improvements have been made. Apple simply notes the update contains "bug fixes".

Update: Based on comments in the discussion, it is recommended you are upgraded to the latest iTunes (7.5) before (or after) applying this update.

With the return of methods to create free ringtones on the iPhone, RougeAmoeba has reintroduced their MakeiPhoneRingtone application which automates the manual process of renaming your AAC files and reimporting them into iTunes.

Drop any AAC file on MakeiPhoneRingtone and it will be processed and passed off to iTunes, where it will be handled as a Ringtone. The file will show up in iTunes' Ringtone sub-library as well as the Ringtones tab in the iPhone section, where you can sync it to your iPhone. Once it's on your iPhone, you can use the file as a global ringtone, per-contact ringtone, or even an alarm clock sound.

The application is only available for Mac.

Several users have noted that custom ringtone workarounds have started working again the latest version of iTunes and iPhone firmware 1.1.2. The most detailed descriptions were provided by:

overminer for Windows XP

1. Choose your music or sound (mp3)
2. Use audacity to cut the song to 40 seconds or less
3. Drag the song to itunes
4. Right click on the song in itunes and convert to AAC
5. Find the .mpa song in folder My DocumentsMy MusiciTunesiTunes Music
6. Make sure you have a folder My DocumentsMy MusiciTunesiTunes MusicRingtones (if not create the folder)
7. Rename the .mpa song to .mpr (you may want to change your computer settings to show hidden extensions)
8. Double click on the renamed song.
9. The new ringtone should now appear in the ringtones list in itunes. Select it for syncing
10. Sync the iphone.
11. Go to SettingsSoundRingtone on the iPhone. There is a new grouping called Custom. Your new ringtone should be there.

and jkwuc89 for Mac OS X 10.5:

Select the song in iTunes that I want to use as a ringtone. Protected AAC files will not work.
Right-click on the song and select Get Info
Go to the Options page and select the start and end times for the ringtone
Right-click on the song again and select Convert Selection to AAC
Right-click on the converted song and select Show in Finder
Drag the .m4a file from the Finder window to your desktop
Go back to iTunes and delete the converted song from iTunes. When I skipped this step, double clicking on the .m4r file to import the ringtone into iTunes did not work properly.
Right-click on the song file on your desktop, select Get Info and change the file extension from .m4a to m4r. You should get a warning message about changing the extension.
Open a Finder window and locate the Ringtones folder underneath your iTunes folder. The path should be /Users//Music/iTunes/iTunes Music/Ringtones. If this folder does not exist, create it.
Drag the renamed song file from your desktop to the Ringtones folder in Finder.
Double-click on the .m4r file now stored inside the Ringtones folder. iTunes should change to the Ringtones folder under Library near the top and start playing the ringtone
Plug-in your iPhone to begin the sync process. This should copy the ringtone over to your iPhone. You can verify this after the sync is complete by expanding the iPhone contents inside iTunes and then, selecting the Ringtones folder.

Now, after doing the sync step above, I still did not have a Custom category under Settings | Sounds | Ringtone on my iPhone. I suspect that "something" must be done to get this to appear (like purchasing and syncing a ringtone for instance). So, to work around this, I downloaded, installed and ran the trial version of iToner. After doing one sync from within iToner, the Custom category showed up on my iPhone.

We don't know if Apple will take this method away again in the future. In the meanwhile, iPhoneRingToneMaker (Windows) and iToner (Mac) continue to function with the latest updates.

Pocket-lint.co.uk reports that Apple has confirmed that "plenty more upgrades" are coming for the Apple iPhone.

"All the complaints and feature requests we've had can be fixed and added by software upgrades", a spokesman for the company told Pocket-lint.

Some even suggest that Apple is spacing out updates intentionally to provide gradually added functionality over months. One insider even claims that Apple is planning on adding video functionality with Youtube upload integration:

"They [Apple] aren't stupid. They won't want to give you everything at once. You wait, there will an exciting partnership with YouTube that adds video functionality and then lets you upload to the site in no time", an industry insider told Pocket-lint.

TimesOnline.co.uk reports on the apparent success of the iPhone launch in the U.K.

The iPhone reportedly sold "tens of thousands" of units on opening weekend. According to the article, two thirds of Apple iPhone customers were switching from a rival network to O2. With a saturated mobile phone market in the U.K., this sort of subscriber switching could be a big win for the iPhone carrier, though it reportedly came at a price:

The desperation of the main networks Vodafone, Orange, T-Mobile and O2 to gain an edge over each other triggered a fierce battle for the rights to market the iPhone. The losing players maintain that the O2 deal is not economic. The Spanish-owned group is thought to have agreed to an ongoing share of revenues with the Californian giant of up to 30 per cent.

In less than a week from the last developer seed, Apple has released another version of Mac OS X 10.5.1 to developers for testing.

The latest 10.5.1 seed (9B16) has "no known issues" but lists only a few updates since the previous build. These include updating applications even if moved out of /Applications, moving files to a different directory in Finder bug fix, and DNS resolution fixes. The update is not yet available to the general public.

10.5.1 represents the first maintenance release to Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) since its release only 3 weeks ago. While accelerated developer seeds traditionally indicate that Apple is approaching release, Apple's has yet to release the Mac OS X 10.4.11 update that has long been expected.

Gene Munster (via Appleinsider) believes that an iPhone software update due next year will add a system-wide search feature "similar to Spotlight on a Mac".

Munster, who tapped his own sources for the tidbit, says the feature will enable users to easily locate contacts, emails, phone numbers, or calendar events through a single search interface on the touch-screen handsets.

The new software update is said to arrive in February around the same time that the iPhone is opened to 3rd party applications.

Google has released the software development kit for Android - a mobile platform announced by Google last week.

Documentation, SDK and first look videos are offered through the ">Android Project page. Most interesting, perhaps, is the Android Demo video which walks through prototype Android devices. Both a smaller and more advanced prototypes of Android phones are shown. They demonstrate functionality as well as detail capabilities as shown here:

Android's web browser is based on Webkit which also powers Apple's Safari browser. This means that web pages will render the same on Android's browser and Safari. Zooming/Scrolling with a touch interface is also supported as shown in the demo.

3d OpenGL support, as shown by a demo of id software's Quake.

The demo video shows other capabilities, such as tight integration into Google Maps. The first commercial phones based on the Android platform are not expected until the second half of 2008. Unlike the iPhone, the Android platform appears to emphasize openness and is encouraging of 3rd party application development. Despite early plans to keep the iPhone closed to 3rd party development, Apple has announced that a 3rd party development kit will become available for the iPhone in February 2008, though what restrictions it may likely entail are not yet known.

The Android SDK and emulator for Intel Macs is available for download.
