i’d really prefer a new mini over this single speaker, single rear camera thing… but apparently this is what the market is asking for?

Yup, same thought here. It would be an instant buy for me if it was in the 5.6-5.8 size range.

Exactly and thicker would be the iPhone mini. We all know how that sold because of the poor battery life. I don’t think a thinner version of the iPhone mini with worse battery life would sell any better.
If iPhone mini existed with current battery chemistry the battery life would likely be noticeably better than it was for 13 mini, and even 13 mini was better than 12 mini (I owned both, my current iPhone is 13 mini). I think not just battery life, but the thing that killed the "mini" more than even that was its name. I came to this conclusion having discussions with two separate women. They were looking for a new iPhone and when I suggested "iPhone mini" both independently were adamant they didn't want a "mini" iPhone. I showed them my 13 mini and they both had the same reaction, surprised, they considered the phone larger than its name would suggest, "oh, it's not really mini". I have given this feedback to Apple. The name put many people off, I'm sure of it. Go with 5.6" rather than 5.4" and drop the sub-name, and indeed, numbering. Instead, releasing simply "iPhone" in several sizes (3 or 4), and the same sizes for "iPhone Ultra" which could be 33% thicker—fatboy. Apple must regain its focus and product clarity, the lines a mess.
