Apple's Upcoming 15-Inch MacBook Air: What We Know

Rumors suggest that Apple is working on a larger version of the MacBook Air, which is expected to measure in at 15 inches, putting it on par with the MacBook Pro. This guide covers everything that we know about the 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ so far.

Sizing

The 2022 version of the ‌MacBook Air‌ measures in at 13.6 inches, so a 15-inch version would be considerably larger. It would be sized between the 14- and 16-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌ models, and it would be the largest version of the ‌MacBook Air‌ to date. Analyst Ross Young believes the ‌MacBook Air‌ will feature a 15.5-inch display size, putting it closer to the 16-inch MacBook than the 14-inch model.

At 15.5 inches, the ‌MacBook Air‌'s display would be just slightly bigger than the previously available 15.4-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌. With thinner bezels like the 2022 ‌MacBook Air‌, a 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ could be notably smaller in size than the 15.4-inch ‌MacBook Pro‌, however.

Apple has not offered the ‌MacBook Air‌ in two sizes since the 11-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ was discontinued in 2016.

Design

The 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ is expected to use the same general design as the 2022 13-inch ‌MacBook Air‌, which in turn takes design cues from the ‌MacBook Pro‌. It will feature the flat-edged design with large Force Touch trackpad, keyboard with function keys, and no fan.

Like the 2022 ‌MacBook Air‌, it is expected to include a MagSafe charging port, a 1080p camera, and an upgraded speaker system.

Display

Apple's 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ is not expected to include mini-LED or ProMotion display technology, with those features limited to the ‌MacBook Pro‌ models.

Apple Silicon Chip

The upcoming 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ is expected to use chips in Apple's M2 series, rather than an M3 chip. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes that Apple will use two variants of the M2 chip, but no ‌M2‌ Pro. Apple's ‌M2‌ chip is available in 8-core and 10-core GPU variants, which is likely what Kuo is referring to.

DigiTimes in February suggested the 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ will be equipped with an M2 chip, and a Korean leaker that often shares reliable information about Apple's plans has also confirmed that Apple will use an M2 chip for the 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌.

Going against Kuo, Bloomberg, ‌DigiTimes‌, and other reliable sources, 9to5Mac in March claimed that Apple would use an M3 chip for new versions of the 13-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ and the 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌.

A 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ with a processor that appears to be an M2 chip was spotted in App Store developer logs in April, suggesting that the 15-inch machine will indeed use an ‌M2‌ chip rather than an M3 chip.

9to5Mac claimed that the 13 and 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ models would both use Apple's M3 chip, which will have an 8-core CPU, but that appears to be incorrect.

Naming

Kuo has said that the 15-inch MacBook that Apple is working on might not be in the ‌MacBook Air‌ line, but other rumors have referred to it as an Air.

Launch Date

Refreshed 13-inch and 15-inch ‌MacBook Air‌ models are expected to be introduced at the keynote event of the 2023 Worldwide Developers Conference, set to be held on June 5.

I’d prefer a 12.5” 2 lb version instead.
