iMac to Get a Whole New Look for Apple Silicon
Apple's long-awaited iMac with Apple Silicon is expected to arrive this year featuring a complete redesign, according to a range of reports.
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the redesigned iMac models will feature significantly slimmed down bezels around the display. The large aluminum "chin" segment, below the display of current iMacs, will be removed entirely for a design that prioritizes the screen. Overall, Bloomberg expects the new iMac to look quite similar to the Pro Display XDR monitor that Apple released in 2019.
Current iMacs have a curved rear, but the new iMacs are expected to be completely flat at the back. Previous rumors have described this new iMac as adopting an "iPad Pro design language," presumably with squared-off edges and a slim profile, and played up the similarity of the new machine's look to the Pro Display XDR.
At least one of the new models is expected to measure in at around 24 inches, according to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, with the second model likely being markedly larger. A 24-inch iMac would likely be roughly the same size as the current 21.5-inch iMac physically, with the larger display facilitated by smaller bezels.
The iMac has had the exact same design since 2012, with upgrades over the past nine years largely limited to the display and internals. With the significantly redesigned exterior and an Apple Silicon chip inside, the new iMac models appear to be gearing up to be the biggest upgrade in almost a decade.
The new models are expected to feature next-generation Apple Silicon chips with a more powerful custom GPU, but the chance of Face ID for the iMac seems unlikely after Bloomberg said the feature had been delayed. The redesigned iMacs are expected to launch at some point between spring and fall this year, but it is unclear clear if both model sizes will come out at the same time.
