iPhone 16 Leak Reveals All-New Button
Following the addition of the Action button on the iPhone 15 Pro models, all iPhone 16 models may feature yet another all-new button.
Apple plans to add a so-called "Capture" button to all iPhone 16 models, according to early pre-production information obtained by MacRumors. The button would be located below the power button on the right side of the device, where the mmWave antenna window is currently located on U.S. models of the iPhone 12 and newer. That antenna window would be moved to the left side of the device, under the volume buttons.
The button would be on the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max, but we have yet to determine what its purpose would be. It has been speculated that it could be a dedicated shutter button for the camera, as it would be ideally positioned when taking photos with the iPhone in landscape orientation.
Both the Action button and the Capture button on iPhone 16 models are expected to be capacitive instead of mechanical, meaning they would be solid-state buttons that do not physically move when pressed. Instead, additional Taptic Engines inside the iPhones would provide haptic feedback to simulate the feeling of a button press, similar to the Home button on the iPhone SE and the Force Touch trackpad on newer MacBooks.
Apple is expected to announce the iPhone 16 lineup in September 2024, so the devices are still around 11 months away from launching. Additional details about the "Capture" button and what it would be used for should surface over the coming months, but there is always a chance the plans are abandoned prior to mass production.
