Apple Pay Support Coming to Dutch Bank de Volksbank and Its Subsidiaries

Dutch bank de Volksbank has said it is bringing Apple Pay support to all its customers soon, including those of its subsidiary banks, reports iCulture.

De Volksbank is the parent company of SNS, ASN Bank, and RegioBank, all of which operate in the Netherlands. "‌Apple Pay‌ will be made possible for the customers of SNS, ASN Bank and RegioBank," a De Volksbank spokesperson told iCulture, adding "We can't share anything about timing at the moment."

Over a year and a half ago, SNS Bank indicated that it was in talks with Apple about offering support for ‌Apple Pay‌, but then the bank went silent on the matter. Today's development suggests those talks are finally coming to fruition.

‌Apple Pay‌ officially went live in The Netherlands in 2019, with ING leading the charge to bring Apple's digital payment system to debit and credit card users in the country.

Since then, other banks including Bunq, Monese, N26, Revolut, ABN AMRO, and Rabobank have all brought Apple Pay support to customers in The Netherlands, which suggested de Volksbank and its parent banks were being left behind.

According to Apple's regional ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ web page, ‌‌Apple Pay‌‌ can be used in The Netherlands with several online and high street retailers including Adidas, ALDI, Amac, ARKET, BCC, Burger King, Capi, cool blue, COS, Decathlon, Douglas, H&M, Jumbo, Lidl, McDonalds, Starbucks, and others.

Living in NL, and using Apple Pay in combination with ABN/AMRO bank for about 2 years now (or whenever it was introduced exactly over here), I would say you can use it everywhere in NL.
I never need my physical wallet as all PIN-terminals I have encountered all use contact-free payment.
Great to see more banks joining in!

Fantastic to see SNS finally getting Apple Pay, still odd that it took them so long to catch up with ING and ABN AMRO.
I can't answer that, but I like SNS because they don't invest in weapons, unlike ING and ABN.

Same here, with ING. Main risk is forgetting your banking card's pin code because of infrequent use :)

A question for those in the Netherlands using Apple pay extensively:

Do you also use it for larger amounts (let's say over 100 € ?) and does it work then ?

E.g. a fully loaded cart in an AH: will your payment with Apple Pay work without having to fail it and revert to a card and do chip+pin? Would a contactless payment with a physical card work as well ?

Out here in Belgium Apple pay is accepted on 99% of the terminals as well but as soon as you go over the limit of the contactless payment of a card (50€) it stops working and you need to revert to the physical card.

This isn't what full support for apple pay is about: I've bought e.g. an Apple watch in the US in an Apple store using Apple pay: no problem at all, ditto in Germany. But outside of Apple stores finding the merchants that truly do the full Apple pay integration for ANY amount: it feels much harder to find them for me and that means I use it far less than I would want to.
Might be just a local Belgium thing. I can ApplePay thousands of $ in the US to any vendor without an issue (car insurance, flights, retail stores etc.).

That is an issue of your card, not a limit of ApplePay. The card issuers decide which risk they would like to take. Talk to your bank or get another card. C'est bon, c'est Belge :D

Why anyone needs to pay online with Apple Pay in the Netherlands is beyond me, there are literary lots of others available, no need for another one.
Checking out with Apple Pay and Apple watch is on another level though, it's convenient and secure.
It’s by far the fastest option of all available options. I use it a lot.
