We have a limited amount of information on what might be included in a next-generation ‌Apple Pencil‌, but this guide covers everything we know.

Design and Color

A leaked image said to depict the third-generation ‌Apple Pencil‌ leaked in 2021, featuring a design similar to the ‌Apple Pencil‌ 2, but with a different tip design and a body made from a glossy material. Prior ‌Apple Pencil‌ designs featured a small screw-on tip, but the leaked version has larger tip design that screws into the ‌Apple Pencil‌.

Given that this leak was from 2021, it is not clear if it was actually a version of a third-generation ‌Apple Pencil‌.

The source that leaked the information said that the updated ‌Apple Pencil‌ will come in black and white, rather than being limited to just white.

Functionality

The ‌Apple Pencil‌ is expected to have all of the functionality of the second-generation model, with low latency and integration with the latest iPad models.

All of Apple's iPads support the ‌Apple Pencil‌, but Apple limited the second-generation ‌Apple Pencil‌ to its newer ‌iPad Pro‌ and ‌iPad Air‌, so a third-generation model could be exclusive to newer models.

iPad-based inductive charging is expected, as is gesture support. As for new features, we're not sure what could be introduced at this point in time. Apple patented a color sensing technology that would let the ‌Apple Pencil‌ sample colors from the environment, but there's no word yet on whether that idea will make it into a finalized product.

Haptic Feedback

The ‌Apple Pencil‌ will include haptic feedback for the first time, though it is not yet clear for what. There have been hints of a "squeeze" gesture in the iOS 17.5 code, so there could be some kind of squeeze option for activating tools.

Magnetic Tips

The next ‌Apple Pencil‌ could feature interchangeable tips in different sizes, with the tips able to be swapped out magnetically. There will supposedly be different tips for drawing, technical drawing, and painting. The rumor comes from leaker Majin Bu, who has a mixed track record when it comes to information about Apple's plans.

Vision Pro

A future version of the ‌Apple Pencil‌ could work with the Vision Pro, as Apple has tested a version of the device that has visionOS integration. The ‌Apple Pencil‌ would be able to be used with Vision Pro drawing apps like Freeform and Pixelmator.

How the ‌Apple Pencil‌ would work with the Vision Pro is unknown, but it is possible that users would be able to draw with the ‌Apple Pencil‌ on a flat surface, with the drawing showing up in the visionOS app.

Release Date

Apple is expected to introduce a new ‌Apple Pencil‌ at its May 7 event.
