Apple Seeds Second Beta of visionOS 2.2 to Developers With Ultrawide Mac Virtual Display

Apple today seeded the second beta of an upcoming visionOS 2.2 update to developers for testing purposes, with the beta coming a little over a week after the first visionOS 2.2 beta.

visionOS 2 Feature 1
visionOS 2.2 can be installed by going to the Software Update section of the Settings app on the Vision Pro and opting into Beta Updates.

The visionOS 2.2 update adds a new feature for the Mac Virtual Display option, allowing it to be set to Wide and Ultrawide. The Ultrawide setting is equivalent to two 4K displays side-by-side, and it is a notable improvement over the current Mac Virtual Display that's available in visionOS 2.1.

The Mac Virtual Display allows the Vision Pro to be connected to a Mac with the Vision Pro serving as the display for the machine. The virtual Mac desktop works just like a standard desktop with an external display, but Vision Pro does not support multiple displays. As a solution, Apple has added the option for a wider display to maximize space.

I’m pretty sure this is a dig at those on here that don’t have a Vision Pro and have announced the product is dead, guys?

I did a demo a few weeks ago and brought my laptop to try this out but they said the "demo units can't do that". To connect a Mac Virtual Display, the Vision Pro requires an Apple ID on both the Mac and the Vision Pro, so I think the real answer is that it is too clumsy (and a potential security risk) for them to enable your Apple ID onto the Vision Pro demo units.
I ended up buying one after the demo and have no regrets but I do admit that it is a consumptive device first, practical device second. The more I use the contemporary Mac Virtual Display, the more I love it and am really looking forward to the wide and ultra wide formal release.
If you haven't done a demo, do so, it is pretty impressive! After buying it, I have gone back to my old panoramas and they are so much more immersive than a small flat photo! The spatial photos and videos are pretty cool and YouTube doesn't do them justice, but watching movies is so nice.
Is it worth the price premium over Meta Quest? I can't say since I don't own a Quest, but I love my VisionPro.
Having a huge external display that I can take to work, my home office, dining room table or hotel room to interface with my MPB-16" was my primary driver and I am pleased. I have prescription glasses and had to get the Zeiss inserts.

All this said, some spatial computing things can get a little wonky like when you are trying to grab something, but your eyes dart to something else before you pinch so the pinch affects the something else instead of what you set out to grab. This IO takes some getting use to, but not requiring controllers is sweet!

If I bought a Vision Pro (I didn't), I would at least expect some support for a few years.
Also Apple seems to want to release Vision Pro 2 in 2025/6.
