Nintendo Delays Launch of 'Mario Kart Tour' Mobile Game Until Summer

Nintendo has announced that its upcoming Mario Kart Tour game for iOS devices won't be ready until the summer (via The Verge).

The news came in Nintendo's quarterly earnings report released today, exactly a year since the company first revealed it was bringing the game to smartphones.

Little is known about Mario Kart Tour, but the game was originally scheduled for launch before the company's fiscal year ending March 2019.

Nintendo said the decision to delay it had been made "in order to improve the quality of the application and expand the content offerings after launch."

When it eventually arrives, Mario Kart Tour is expected to use the same free-to-play model of other Nintendo mobile titles, with in-app purchases that help players with certain tasks.

Out of Nintendo's five mobile games so far, four have followed this model (Miitomo, Fire Emblem Heroes, Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, Draglia Lost). Only Super Mario Run has used the pay-once price tier.

IAP is a no go - I’m willing to pay good money for a good game, but it needs to be a fixed price and not money sucking IAP.

Lots of delay due to "lower than expected quality" lately at Nintendo.. :(

That's a good thing in my book. Others just release it anyway..

Sure, but the controls man, the controls... And are people willing to pay 60 bucks for an iOS game? And I think they're not going to cannibalize their Switch.

Buy a Switch.

I wish they would come out with an attachable controller that would turn an iPhone into a gameboy. Super Mario Run was fun, but it left a lot to be desired.

Honestly, I’m hugely surprised Apple haven’t done this. Apple could have also brought out a Switch type product based around iOS.

That's a good thing, not a bad thing. When making a creative product, either you're playing it too safe/conservative and will put out a bland rehash of prior art, or you'll produce something new. Some of that new stuff will be high quality and should be kept. Some of that new stuff will be low quality and should be discarded.

It's good that Nintendo isn't playing it too safe. It's good that Nintendo recognizes the lower quality stuff and is discarding it. Nintendo can take their time to get it right. They've been making phenomenal video games for over 40 years - trust them.

Many are not. Unfortunately, Apple's relationship to 'serious' gaming has been marked by ignorance (or even hostility) for many, many years.
