MacRumors

Hi, I'm Katie. I'll be blogging about the iPhone for MacRumors.

I thought it'd be nice to give y'all a little background as to who I am, what I do, and all that fun stuff, so you can get some of an idea of where I'm coming from.

I'll admit it: I'm an iPod-switcher. I got an iPod and synced it with our Windows machines for about 8 months before I had enough money for my Mac. It just worked so well and beautifully that I decided that an Apple would be a great laptop to have, and heythe iBooks were so cute!

I got my first Mac on September 3rd, 2004. She was a 12" iBook G3 900 mHz from a pawn shop. I upgraded to a 15" PowerBook G4 1.5 gHz that I won via scratch-off card on Tiger night. The iBook suffered logic board death a few weeks later! It was great timing to get the PowerBook when I did!

I've been a regular around the MacRumors forums for a bit over two years now. Arn and I had discussed me doing some blogging for MacRumors in the past, but nothing ever really precipitated until a few days ago. Out of the blue, Arn asked if I'd like to blog about the iPhone for the site. Through a series of fantastic events, here I am. MacRumors has graciously agreed to provide the iPhone and service for me in exchange for blogging about it.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I'll enjoy writing it.

iPhone Blog

After the past few weeks of intense iPhone coverage, in just a few hours, the first of our readers will be setting up their iPhones. Since MacRumors.com traditionally covers breaking news and rumors, it only makes sense to provide our iPhone readers ongoing day-to-day iPhone coverage and use.

We've launched a new sub-blog at:

which can also be reached by the "iPhone" navigation tab at the top of the page. Our iPhone blog carries its own RSS feed as well as an expanded view of the iPhone discussion in our forum, including the latest photos from the iPhone forums.

iPhone Forums

To help organize the forum iPhone traffic, we've created a number of new forums:

iPhone News Discussion - Official blog/news posts
iPhone - General Discussion
iPhone Accessories - Accessories
iPhone Apps and Development - 3rd Party Applications
iPhone Meetups - for launch day (temporary)

Please direct posts to the appropriate forums.

Reader Impressions

We've also set up official threads for new iPhone users to post their experiences, to try to consolidate the information:

iPhone Unbox/Setup Photos - post your photos
iPhone First Impressions / Reviews - post your thoughts
Early Adopter Questions (coming) - questions other readers had about the iPhone

Threads will be open for discussion shortly after 6pm ET.

Post Photos

If you were at one of the regional meetups for the iPhone line, we encourage you to post your photos to your Regional Meetup discussion thread so others can see them. We would prefer you attach the photos to the thread so it will appear in our "Recent Photos" feed. In anticipation of this we've increased JPG and PNG attachments to ~1MB per image.

Meet Katie

While both longofest and myself (arn) will be providing updates to the iPhone blog, we've also recruited one of our forum users (katie ta achoo) to relay some real life iPhone experiences with an ongoing hands on review. We promised her we'd pay for her iPhone + contract and sent her off to stand in line at an Apple Store in Houston. Her introductory post is available now: Say Hello to Katie

One of the major criticisms of Apple's iPhone release is the use of AT&T's EDGE data network.

A common thread amongst the official reviews has been the slow speed of the EDGE Network:

- AT&Ts EDGE cellular network: "excruciatingly slow"
- YouTube videos work great on Wi-Fi, but can display in a lower quality when youre not at a hotspot and are using AT&Ts EDGE network
- Wi-Fi capability doesn't fully make up for the lack of a fast cellular data capability

Tonight, many forum members here and at Howard forums have reported that their EDGE network speeds may have been boosted substantially -- with benchmarks around 200kbps (25 Kilobytes/second).

While there had been rumors that AT&T had been working to upgrade their network to boost speeds from a paltry 40kbps (5 Kilobytes/second), we can't be certain if these numbers truly represent actual speed increases or simply faulty benchmark tools. Unfortunately, we don't have a similar set of data from earlier in the month to compare.

As this claim has been reported elsewhere already, we've posted this story for your interest and debate.

Update: Benchmarks posted by RnSK on June 26 found that EDGE speeds ranged between 16.8 KB/sec - 29.8 KB/sec in Washington, DC, so tonight's benchmark speeds may not actually reflect an increase, but they may be an accurate reflection of EDGE speeds.

Apple has released MacBook Pro Software Update 1.0, which "provides important bug fixes and is recommended for all 2.2/2.4GHz MacBook Pro models."

While Apple does not elaborate on the contents of the update, an analysis of the update package indicates that it contains improvements to the graphics subsystem, with updated nVidia graphics drivers and some updated OpenGL components.

Some initial benchmarks of the updated MacBook Pros had indicated some graphics scores lower than its predecesor. This had been speculated to be caused by faulty graphics drivers. This update would seem to be an attempt at correcting these issues.

On the eve of the iPhone's debut, The Wall Street Journal posts a Q&A with Apple CEO Steve Jobs and AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson (paid subscription required). Update: Samples from a USAToday interview have also been included.

The two talk about many topics ranging from reflecting on the iPhone launch to discussing the decision to stick with AT&T's EDGE, to speculating about how the iPhone will affect the companies. We post a highlight of some of the discussion here. Note that some responses have been paraphrased for brevity.

WSJ: What do you both envision being added over time to the iPhone, in terms of access to ringtones through Cingular's (now rebranded AT&T) platform and maybe through some other manner, like turning your iTunes songs into ringtones?
Mr. Jobs: As you may know, iTunes is now the number three distributor of music in the U.S., ahead of Amazon and Target and behind Best Buy and Wal-Mart, and obviously the largest online distributor of music in the world. Of course, you can play that music now on your iPhone. One might imagine a lot of things down the road.

WSJ: Is one of those things offering music purchases and video purchases directly from the phone?
Mr. Jobs: There's a lot of things you can imagine down the road.

WSJ: [Editor's contraction: Why did you choose EDGE over 3G?]
Mr. Jobs: [Paraphrased] Every AT&T Blackberry gets its mail over EDGE. EDGE is great for mail, and it works well for maps and a whole bunch of other stuff. Where you wish you had faster speed ison a Web browser. It's good enough, but you wish it was a little faster. That's where sandwiching EDGE with Wi-Fi really makes sense because Wi-Fi is much faster than any 3G network.

When we looked at 3G, the chipsets were not low-enough power for what we were looking for. They were not integrated enough, so they took up too much physical space. We cared a lot about battery life and we cared a lot about physical size. Down the road, I'm sure some of those tradeoffs will become more favorable towards 3G but as of now we think we made a pretty good doggone decision.

WSJ: Did you make enough of these to meet demand?
Mr. Jobs: [Paraphrased] We're building a fair number of them... we've built factories to build these things... but it wouldn't surprise me at all if it ain't enough.

USAToday: What if you are sold out by Saturday? Will you let people buy them, and pick them up later?
Mr. Jobs: No, you're going to have to come back in. When you start taking people's money and can't deliver the product, there are lots of legal issues. It's easier to disappoint people.

USAToday: What about corporate e-mail? I understand that's an issue for many consumers, who may not be able to hook up to their company networks?
Mr. Jobs: You'll be hearing more about this in the coming weeks. We have some pilots going with companies with names you'll recognize. This won't be a big issue.

USAToday: [Editor's contraction: Now that you've done it with the iPhone, will you begin pre-announcing products more?]
Mr. Jobs: [Paraphrased] I don't think we will. We did this because of the FCC certification process and because we had to have hundreds of people test it because it was going to be on a network. We had no choice but to do it the way we did it, and I'm glad we did it this way. It worked well, but most of the time, we will do what we normally do.

We've heard some unconfirmed rumblings that Apple may be set to reveal two more announcements related to the iPhone on its launch day (tomorrow). The source is uncertain what these announcements could entail, or whether they concern already-leaked information (i.e. .Mac iPhone RSS Reader).

Of course, Apple has yet to announce iTunes 7.3, which is a requirement for the iPhone. One rumored feature of iTunes 7.3 is the ability to make iTunes custom ringtones, although this has since been disputed by ThinkSecret.

According to ThinkSecret, Steve Jobs held a company-wide town hall today and announced that Apple employees will get free 8GB iPhones this July. This applies to all full-time Apple employees as well as part time employees who have been with Apple for more than 1 year

The phones are expected to be delivered to employees by the end of July, after initial consumer demand has subsided. According to Yahoo! Finance, Apple has 17,787 full-time employees.

Meanwhile, ThinkSecret suggests that Apple has about 3 million iPhones manufactured and will be releasing about 1 million of them into the channel this week in an effort "to avoid perceived major shortages."

Arstechnica provides a recap of the speech from Steve Jobs.

Regarding Macs:

The first leg is the Mac business, which Steve addressed by saying that they have the "best Macs" in the new product pipeline ever right now, and that the stuff coming out in the next year is "off the charts."

Regarding OS X:

There is one OS group that does Mac OS X for the Mac and the iPhone, as well as "some iPods we're working on."

The AT&T Training manual (pdf link) posted by The Boy Genius Report is turning out to be a treasure trove of information.

iPhone Bluetooth
The iPhone currently supports two Bluetooth profiles: Hands-free (v1.5) and Headset. The Apple-branded Bluetooth headset uses Hands-Free Profile 1.5, and may be compatible with other third party Bluetooth enabled devices that support the profile. We have previously reported that Apple's Bluetooth headset would be priced at $129.

3rd Party Accessories
Apple has created a "Works with iPhone" program, similar to the "Made for iPod" program. If the iPhone detects that a non-certified device is connected to the docking port, it will alert the user that the experience may be less than optimal, although doing so will NOT void the warranty. Such a method was recently described in an Apple patent.

SIM Card Portability
While AT&T and Apple have made it clear that the iPhone will not accept SIM cards from other carriers, the document does explain that it will be possible to move the iPhone's SIM card to other AT&T phones. MMS and IM messages sent from the new phone are included in the iPhone Data Plan. However, contacts added to the SIM while in another device will not appear in iPhone.

Warranty/Repair Process
Notable details are as follows:
- iPhones which are Dead on Arrival(DOA) will not be exchanged over the counter. They must go through AppleCare.
- Apple expects repair turnaround as 3 business days.
- For a small fee, Apple will provide an AppleCare Service iPhone to the customer while their iPhone is repaired.

Only Apple knows how many iPhones are going to be delivered to each store, but based on various numbers we've heard, here is our best guess.

First, there are approximately 1800 AT&T Stores, and 164 Apple retail stores nationwide. Apple is limiting sales to 2 per person, while AT&T is limited sales to 1 per person.

We'd previously heard that Apple Stores would be getting somewhere around 1000 1500 units, with "flagship" stores expected to get more inventory. Based on user reports, some AT&T stores have been willing to give out numbers of inventory. The numbers have ranged in the 70-90 range for the few stores polled. Assuming these numbers are to believed (which is a big assumption), that places the first day of iPhone retail inventory at 400,000+ units.

To counter, one forum post claims that their AT&T store received 90 iPhones today (50 8GB and 40 4GB) with a large shipment also expected tomorrow. Forum posts are generally not very reliable sources of information, but is posted for interest. Despite these claims, it seems very unlikely that iPhones are already being delivered to AT&T stores, as Apple's security precautions to prevent premature release of the iPhone appears to be at an all time high.

Finally, there has been no official word on when iPhone mail ordering will start, but we presume mail order sales will become open sometime Friday (June 29th) night.

BoyGeniusReport published an AT&T training guide which provides walk-throughs for sales reps on selling the iPhone.

The most interesting portion of the report is an excerpt describing the credit-check process.

For customers that choose not to run the Pre-Approved credit check in the store, they will go through a credit check during the iTunes activation process. However, this is not the preferred method because customers that require a deposit and or require an analyst review will be presented with one of the following options:
- choose Pick Your Plan
- pay the deposit, requiring a return trip to the store
- return product, requiring a 10% re-stocking fee.

Later they specify that "customers will only be offered GoPhone Pick Your Plan [as an option] if the credit check results in a deposit requirement".

AT&T's GoPhone Pick Your Plan requires no annual contract.

With Pick Your Plan, you establish monthly automatic payments for service and use the balance on your account for voice minutes or other features. It's that easy.

Update: For those hoping to somehow take advantage of a "contract-less" iPhone plan, it appears the Pick Your Plan deals are significantly worse (more expensive for the minutes) than the existing plans.

ECamm's developer blog, Mac Daddy World, has noticed that new Santa Rosa based MacBook Pros include upgraded iSights sporting a 1.3 mega-pixel camera.

Previous integrated and now-discontinued standalone iSights contained a VGA resolution iSight. While it appears as though Apple's built-in applications such as iChat still force the resolution to VGA quality, any application could theoretically take advantage of the increased resolution as of the Mac OS 10.4.10 update according to the developers.
