DO. NOT. BUY.

Best Buy has the 14-inch MacBook Pro 16/512GB for $1599, $400 off! Buy that instead. Faster, better, great value.

If these things are seeing discounts already, then maybe Apple will see the folly of the choice they made to hobble the 256GB of storage and do a mid-cycle modification. Doubtful, but…

Otherwise, if you don't need one today, order the $1399 8/512GB and save $100 over the $1499 model. But… really… the Best Buy price is the deal… get one before they're all gone. Screw Apple and their greedy penny pinching stupidity.
For 80% of people on here who spend most of their days browsing the internet sipping pumpkin spiced lattes, the M2 Air is more than enough.

You're right… 80% of the people could probably get by with a 2015 MacBook Air (8GB/128GB)… and they're $350 at Woot right now… so why not just do that instead? Or, how about a $279 iPad?? If they can get by, why would they be stupid enough to throw away money on a $1200 Air? Eh, just grab a $999 M1 Air, can get them for $900 or less. Stupid is as stupid does.

But people aren't spending that kinda of money… they're spending $1200. And getting an intentionally-hobbled computer, thanks to overt greed by a company that purports to sell "only the best". 3 years from now, when macOS is even heavier than what it is currently, has dropped Intel support, and is hammering the Apple Silicon base 8GB of RAM harder and going deeper into swap (like Monterey vs Mojave), that extra $200 for dual-channel storage is going to look like a bargain compared to a new $1500 MacBook Air. Ask anyone who bought a 4GB Air vs an 8GB Air how that worked out for them in the long run. Or an 8GB iPhone 4s.

Or… more probably… they'll just think their computer is crap, think Apple makes crap, slow computers, and not buy a Mac next time. Which is exactly what an 8% marketshare community does not need. That 80% has no loyalty, Apple should not be making computers for them; Apple should be making the "best" computers for the smart, discerning customers they claim to design for. The ones who don't respect a $5 profit grab on a $1200 purchase from a $2+T company.
So let me get this straight: the people buying a computer $1,200 are 'stupid' (your words).

Instead, they should stick it to a $2 trillion dollar company by spending $500 MORE on a computer that virtually no significant benefits to them?

No one wants the base model. We all know why.
The 14/16" Pros were discounted within a couple months after release, too.

Considering this has only 8GB this might not be the model people want over the 16GB.
Plus it's just one color. There's no way to be perfect about how many of each SKU to produce.

It’s “brave" of Apple to keep increasing the price of its products!

It’s extremely stupid of people to keep buying these expensive options while there are alternatives cost less. People really need to learn to ONLY buy the ones with less profit margin among similar products and push ALL luxury brands to death.
Slow down there, comrade. It's that kind of thinking that led us to products like netbooks. That kind of thinking nearly destroyed the PC industry in its race to the bottom. It's ok to have something better than the bare minimum.

It's nice to see discounts, but this one is the same as the education discount you can always get direct from Apple. Plus right now during the back to school offer you also get a $150 gift card.
