'On the Rocks' Becomes First Apple TV+ Movie to Get DVD and Blu-Ray Release

Sofia Coppola's Apple TV+ comedy "On the Rocks" will be released on Blu-Ray and DVD next month, the first ‌Apple TV‌+ movie to be made available on physical media.

First revealed by Sigmund Judge, "On the Rocks" can be pre-ordered now on Amazon for $17.99. According to the Blu-Ray version information, the physical disc is being distributed by Lionsgate and will ship from October 26, 2021, meaning its exclusivity will no longer be through ‌‌Apple TV‌+‌ on Apple's devices and supported TVs and streaming boxes.

"On the Rocks" stars Rashida Jones, Bill Murray, and Marlon Wayans, and tells the story of Laura, a young mother in New York faced with sudden doubts about her marriage.

Laura teams up with her impulsive father Felix, who insists they investigate the situation, leading to an adventure across the city and a generational clash about how people see relationships differently from their parents.

Coppola and Murray last collaborated on 2003's "Lost in Translation," which won Coppola an Academy Award for original screenplay and earned Murray an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

The only other ‌Apple TV‌+ original available for customers to purchase on Blu-ray and DVD is the drama series "Defending Jacob," which made the jump to physical media in July, courtesy of Paramount.

If it were one of a small handful of my favorite films of all time, then yeah I’d want to own it in crazy high resolution on physical media with some nice artwork. Same reason vinyl won’t die. It doesn't matter how convenient it is to play the endless supply of whatever music some streaming service plays next, whether with a couple taps or a spoken command, there is a completely different quality of experience in picking up your favorite record, seeing the cover art, loading the turntable, looking at this big pile of artwork & notes in your hand and listening to it. With streaming, you do get some audio for your ears, but that’s it. With the record album, the act of physically loading the high quality media demands you stop what you're doing, invest your time energy and attention to the thing, and then it stimulates at least three senses, touch, then sight, then audio, then all three, (+ smell in the case of records) fully engaging your senses and attention. If i’m listening to streaming, it is free to recede into background noise and usually does while I get busy doing whatever else. If I put a record on, and you asked me what I’m doing, what I’m doing is listening to a record.

I can look at an extremely high quality photoshopped image of an ice cream cone on an 8k display. But its still nowhere near the experience as holding a Kopps frozen custard in my hand. …& jammng it into my face a second later. The two sensory experiences are just not the same.
