I know enough Spanish to get by: What time is it, I need help, wheres the Apple Store? You know, the basics.

I've picked up parts of the language in Spanish class in High School and around Texas, but my friend, Laura, taught the Spanish I use most often: How to curse at people in traffic, how to pick up men, and a song about a cow.

From time to time, Ill send a text message in Spanish. In the past, I've avoided it because I had to turn off T9 on my old phone to even think about writing in Spanish. But that was a cruddy $50 phone How would the iPhone stack up?Allow me to fire up Notes. Ill type my little Spanish cow song. Its the best! :)

Just trudging though came up with this:

Picture 2 500

With the iPhone I usually just power through (audio) and let the iPhone make the text make sense. Sometimes it confuses my friends, but they do the same thing back at me!

By comparison, the actual words to the song are:

Yo tengo una vaca lechera,
no es una vaca cualquiera,
me da leche merengada,
ay! que vaca tan salada,
toln , toln, toln , toln.

(Video of Katie's rendition)

Since English is the default language, I thought maybe changing it to Spanish would help when I typed my song. After running through all the settings, I couldn't find a way to change it! Dios Mio!

Since the iPhone uses its built in dictionary to power the auto-correction on the touch keyboard, if the word you are typing isn't recognized, it will happily correct it to one that it thinks is right. Even if it isn't what you wanted. (Someone write an app to read my mind, please. :)

I guess Ill just have to stick to English for now, s?

eWeek Microsoft-Watch blogger relates his two week experience with the iPhone.

Before reading any further, Microsofties and their partners should take out paper and a pen. Apple has done so much right with the iPhonebased on my experience, anyway that they should take notes.

Joe Wilcox replaced his Nokia N95 with the iPhone in a last minute decision which he doesn't regret. He breaks down what he sees the major benefit of the iPhone: Synchronization, Mobile Web, Mobile E-Mail, Battery Life, and that it's simply a joy to use.

Wilcox writes "I never really liked my cell phone before now. But I lovemy iPhone. It's a real joy to use; using the features makes me laugh. All technology products should be this useful and fun."

A recent patent filed by Apple suggests the company is continuously looking for ways to improve user input devices. In this case, Apple describes an "improved feedback mechanism for touch pads", including "devices capable of illuminating the touch sensitive surface of the touch pad" and "methods for providing visual feedback at the touch pad."

Although touch pads work well, improvements to their form feel and functionality are desired. By way of example, it may be desirable to provide visual stimuli at the touch pad so that a user can better operate the touch pad. For example, the visual stimuli may be used (among others) to alert a user when the touch pad is registering a touch, alert a user where the touch is occurring on the touch pad, provide feedback related to the touch event, indicate the state of the touch pad, and/or the like.

Apple currently includes back-lit keyboards in its MacBook Pro notebook computers. The current application builds on numerous previous patents filed between 2002 and 2005.

A Blog entry claims that if you complain about EDGE service, AT&T will let you cancel the "required" $20 data plan on the iPhone.

Under this cheaper plan you still get 450 anytime minutes, 5000 night/weekend minutes, free mobile-to-mobile, rollover minutes, you can still use the internet features over WiFi and you dont have to pay an extra $20 a month for the privilege of enduring worse than dial-up speeds over AT&Ts Edge service.

Your mileage may vary, but there had been rumors prior to the iPhone launch that the data plan could be canceled after the fact.

Intel today introduced the first mobile "Extreme" branded processor, the X7800, clocked at 2.6 GHz. What's more, Intel has removed over-clocking restrictions, allowing OEM manufacturers or enthusiasts to eke additional power out of the chip if so desired.

Apple currently uses Intel's Core 2 Duo chips at speeds up to 2.4 GHz (the previous top speed) in its MacBook Pro, MacBook, and iMac computers. There is no hard evidence yet that Apple will use Intel's latest chip in its computers.

Intel also announced a new desktop processor today (Core 2 Extreme QX6850 quad-core), however the announcement does not look to have much bearing on the Apple community, as Apple has continually eschewed Intel's Desktop products in favor of Intel's less power hungry mobile products or more powerful workstation/server Xeons.

For interest, the newly announced Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 quad-core processor clocks in at 3.0GHz with a new, faster 1333 MHz system bus.

One reader reports that a Yellowpages.com representative claimed that Yellowpages.com would soon be arriving on the iPhone as a new application similar to Youtube. It is reportedly due sometime next month, presumably though an iPhone software update.

Yellowpages.com is a telephone directory owned by AT&T. They already have mobile versions of the site available for a limited number of AT&T mobile devices. It certainly seems conceivable that an iPhone specific version could be in the works.

Starting in April 2007 there were rumors from MediaTakeOut that rapper Jay-Z was leaving the Def Jam Recordings record label to create a new "super label" with singer Beyonce.

In an exclusive interview, MediaTakeOut.com spoke to a key person involved in creating the new label. And according to that insider, the new label will launch early next year. Tells our insider, "It's a done deal. [Jay Z] already has Beyonce and [Mathew Knowles] on board ... She'll be finishing up her contract [with Sony], and I expect that she'll sign on to the new label shortly afterwards."

Jay-Z is a popular rapper and current president and CEO of Def Jam -- a record label owned by Universal Music.

At the time, Jay-Z was reportedly shopping this new "super label" around with the major record labels "and to Apple - who [was] very interested in doing business".

Now, Moli.com is claiming that "an inside industry source" says that its a done deal.

[Jay-Z and Beyonce] will move to Apple to run a new music division. It sounds rather incredible: [Jay-Z's] already got a pretty good job, running Def Jam, and [Steve] Jobs may be too smart to get into the tanking recording business (as others have said). Of course, if it is true, my guess is this would be a new, revamped record biz, one based on digital distribution, not boring old physical products.

Coincidentally, Universal Music recently let their long term contract lapse with Apple for iTunes music distribution and have gone on a short term "at will" distribution deal.

The reliability of these sites is unknown, but published for interest as well as due to the existance of a historical rumor trail.

Readers should remember that Apple and Apple Corps previously settled giving Apple, Inc. ownership of all trademarks related to "Apple", which would pave the way for Apple to pursue this sort of deal.

Something the iPhone is missing is internet music streaming. A web application called SeeqPod addresses lets you listen to music files publicly available on the internet. Point your iPhone to SeeqPod.com/iPhone and start clickin'.

You can either browse by artist or "search and discover" on the home page. Browsing has a really pretty, iPhone-esque inferface.

seeqpod 500
When you find a song you like, click on it, and it'll load as an mp3 and play in-browser:

seeqpod playing a song 500

The discover function is really neat. You type in an artist and it'll bring up ones that are similar to who you typed in. A search for Franz Ferdinand brought up Joss Stone, The Killers, and Coldplay, for example.

A few problems: browsing can be a little wonky. Since the music is just indexed from the web, some of the songs aren't named, just file names like "Audio Track 06" by Elton John is actually a live version of Rocketman. Going between tracks and artists can be a little slow, but it's understandable as it's loading webpages as you do it. Another problem is the inability to download the song to the phone, but if it were possible, I'm sure you'd run into a billion copyright issues.

I tried this over the Wifi at my house and over EDGE. Wifi was fine and fast, just as expected, but over EDGE, that was a different story. The MP3 files take a good long time to download, so I wouldn't really recommend using this site via EDGE unless you're horribly, terribly, impossibly bored. It's a little bit faster than dial-up. Frustrating, but doable, but "rather not"-able.

SeeqPod is definitely going in my "Apps" bookmark folder in mobile Safari. Seems like it'd be a neat way for your friends to recommend new musicgo to the URL, click "share" and email away.

Today was going to be about how to make a super-cute homemade iPhone case. I got cute fabric, some cute buttons for a closure all so freakin' adorable, but...

I make a pattern, I sew it together and:

Fits worse than that rootin' tootin' Speck case, which I finally returned yesterday -- so scratch that plan.

Returning the Speck cases was a simple operation. I took the reboxed cases and my receipt to a clerk holding a little hand scanner. He wasn't surprised at all that I was returning them. A cute thing happened on the way to the Apple Store, though. Dove was handing out free samples of chocolate. Dove chocolates have little sayings written on the inside of the aluminum wrapper. I opened it and popped it in my mouth as I walked to the Apple Store. The wrapper said:

So, the first practical (sorta) application from the iPhone hacking efforts appears on HacktheiPhone -- but its not for the faint of heart.

The 23 step tutorial requires an involved process which is not without risk:

Following these instructions may brick (kill) your iPhone making it completely unusable. If your iPhone becomes unresponsive to restoration via iTunes, then you may have to seek repair or replacement through Apple Inc., or AT&T. However, everyone we know of has been able to restore their iPhone fully by using iTunes. Pay careful attention to the instructions here. We are NOT responsible for your results. You are assuming all risks. These instructions were completed successfully by many people before being posted here, but we cannot account for everyone's individual computer system configurations or ability to follow directions.

As it turns out, a few MacRumors forum members have successfully installed ringtones with this procedure.

USA Today reports that early iPhone adopters are overwhelmingly happy with their iPhones.

In one of the first such studies, 90% of 200 owners said they were "extremely" or "very" satisfied with their phone. And 85% said they are "extremely" or "very" likely to recommend the device to others, says the online survey conducted and paid for by market researcher Interpret of Santa Monica, Calif. The firm surveyed 1,000 cellphone users July 6-10.

Of course, early adopters are a special population and may not reflect the satisfaction of later consumers as a whole. Some other interesting statistics that came from the studies are included:

51% of buyers were switching to AT&T from another carrier
35% of carrier switchers paid an early termination fee (avg $167) to switch
3 of 10 were first-time Apple customers.
for 4 of 10, the iPhone was their first iPod
New iPhone owners expected to pay about $35 more a month than their previous cellphone.

Meanwhile, Forbes publishes a report that Telefonica SA's O2 mobile phone unit has reached an agreement to become the exclusive network partner for Apple's iPhone in the UK. Sales are reported to begin "shortly". Vodafone had reportedly been a front runner in negotiations but in the end felt that the commercial terms were not viable.

The instructions are a bit hard to follow without seeing the game, but makes sense when you start playing.

1. If you see protrusions on the left and right, hold the iPhone in portrait mode.
2. If you see protrusions on the top and bottom, hold the iPhone in landscape mode.
3. Do NOT change the orientation of the iPhone while you are in a section with protrusions. This will cause you to crash.

Apple posted the MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.3 tonight. Apple only posts a simple description of the 1.8MB update:

This EFI Firmware update fixes a display issue on 2.2/2.4GHz 15-inch MacBook Pro models.

Apple also posted Firmware Restoration CD 1.3 which can restore the firmware of an Intel-based Macintosh computer.

You can only use this to restore the firmware after an interrupted or failed update. If your computer is already in this state, youll need to download the software and create the CD on another Macintosh computer, or you can take your computer to an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider to restore your firmware. This CD can be created on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macintosh computers.

MacOSXHints publishes a tip about using iPhone's Google Maps to find Wifi spots in your area.

So, let's say that I'm in a neighborhood that I'm not familiar with. I ask somebody nearby what the local zip code is (let's say, 92116), and then I go to the Maps widget on my iPhone. I type in wifi 92116 and then hit Search. Up will pop up a whole array of (usually) free wireless networks -- coffee shops, libraries, book stores.

We previously posted a link to Jiwire which provides a similar service, and allows filtering by "Free" Wifi hotpots. Google's method appears to show both free and paid hotspots.
