Apple Releases Safari Technology Preview 119 With Bug Fixes and Performance Improvements

safaripreviewiconApple today released a new update for Safari Technology Preview, the experimental browser Apple first introduced four years ago in March 2016. Apple designed the ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ to test features that may be introduced into future release versions of Safari.

‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release 119 includes bug fixes and performance improvements for Web Inspector, Speech Recognition, CSS, Scrolling, JavaScript, Media, WebAssembly, Web Animations, Accessibility, and Web API.

The current ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ release is the built on the new Safari 14 update included in macOS Big Sur with support for Safari Web Extensions imported from other browsers, tab previews, password breach notifications, web authentication with Touch ID, and more.

The new ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available for both macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur, the newest version of the Mac operating system.

The ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ update is available through the Software Update mechanism in System Preferences to anyone who has downloaded the browser. Full release notes for the update are available on the Safari Technology Preview website.

Apple's aim with ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ is to gather feedback from developers and users on its browser development process. ‌Safari Technology Preview‌ can run side-by-side with the existing Safari browser and while designed for developers, it does not require a developer account to download.

This version (14.1) has improved scrolling compared to 14.0.3 that ships with Big Sur RC2, however both still are worse than Safari 13.1.3.

Tested side by side in the same machine, running Catalina 10.15.7. Already reported to Apple but probably won't help much.

They totally messed up scrolling on Safari with 14.x updates. It is smooth as before on most sites but it is quite annoying on some sites. It was perfectly smooth with Safari 13.x version.

I tried this version (Safari 14.1) and it seems they improved the scrolling but it still is not as smooth as 13.x. It is also sad that X.1 versions are released in the last week of March every year. Therefore, we have to wait 2 months to get this update on stable.

You think Chrome collects less data than Safari?

Data collection is Google’s business model.

My safari has been crashing semi often lol. Never crashed before Big Sur. Hopefully it improves.
Really? Mine never does. Sounds like you should do a little thinking and see what might be causing it. Is it particular web sites? do you have some extensions loaded? VPN? Anti-virus? At least send the application report to Apple.

I hate to say it, but I have become jaded to people who report all these problems when I am having none. there has to be some reason. I do perform a clean install before upgrading to a new major release. A couple years back I seemed to have some gremlins floating around, the clean install got rd of them and I have had none since

Do these safari tech previews tend to have noticeable differences than regular safari?

As a comparison, I do often see and utilize newer features in macOS and iOS betas. But I'm curious about Safari tech previews.

thanks.
rarely, but sometimes. I think of Technology Preview as the beta program for Safari. Kind of like google chrome canary.
