I wonder why any of these vendors order so many of the absolute base models on every device? Then they have to discount them to clear inventory. I thinking especially of the single 256GB SSDs which make the machine slower in use.The 512GB SSD takes advantage of the speedier processors capability.

Shame on Apple for even offering these crippled devices.

@switz The 14/16 Pros are all 512GB+ and don't use the slower 256GB SSDs. You're thinking of the Airs
The base 14" MBP's do have slower SSDs though

https://9to5mac.com/2023/01/24/macbook-pro-ssd-performance-drop/

A quick look inside the base-level M2 Pro MacBook Pro revealed something I hadn’t expected to see – or, rather, that something I HAD expected to see was missing. Like the base level M2 MacBook Air, the base level of the latest 14″ MacBook Pro seems to feature fewer NAND chips – at a higher capacity – than the last generation. This results in SSD read and write performance that’s dramatically lower than the previous generation.

https://www.theverge.com/2023/1/24/23570010/apple-ssd-slower-m2-pro-14-inch-nand-chips

In BlackMagic’s Disk Speed Test, the 512GB SSD in Apple’s latest flagship achieved read speed scores of around 2,970 MB/s and write speed scores of around 3,150 MB/s, compared to 4,900 MB/s reads and 3,950 MB/s writes that the M1 Pro with a 512GB SSD was capable of.

That means the 2023 base model has around 39 percent slower reads and 20 percent slower writes than the one released in 2021.

That base model 14" M1 Pro is a pretty sweet deal when you consider the price-to-performance with the full-price 14" M2 Pro
