iPhone 15 Lineup Rumored to Feature Significantly Larger Batteries [Updated]

The iPhone 15 lineup will feature significantly larger batteries across the board, according to an alleged Foxconn worker speaking to ITHome.

The information claims that the iPhone 15 will feature an 18% larger battery, iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro a 14% larger battery, and the iPhone 15 Pro Max a 12% larger battery. The exact capacity changes are said to be as follows:

2021 2022 2023
iPhone 13: 3,227mAh iPhone 14: 3,279mAh iPhone 15: 3,877mAh
iPhone 13 mini: 2,406mAh iPhone 14 Plus: 4,325mAh iPhone 15 Plus: 4,912mAh
iPhone 13 Pro: 3,095mAh iPhone 14 Pro: 3,200mAh iPhone 15 Pro: 3,650mAh
iPhone 13 Pro Max: 4,352mAh iPhone 14 Pro Max: 4,323mAh iPhone 15 Pro Max: 4,852mAh

If correct, the changes would mean that the 15 Plus would increase its battery capacity lead over the Pro Max model even further, while the 15 Pro would remain the iPhone with the smallest battery. The source is without a proven track record, but the alleged capacities seem plausible, especially given the fact that this year's iPhone models are expected to get slightly thicker, providing more internal space for larger batteries. With the efficiency improvements of the A16 and A17 Bionic chips, it seems highly likely that the entire iPhone lineup could boast battery life improvements this year.

ITHome also highlighted separate information purportedly coming out of Foxconn that is circulating on Weibo saying that the iPhone 15 Pro will begin with 256GB of storage as standard, doubling the current 128GB base storage configuration. This would also be a key differentiator between the Pro and non-Pro models, since the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus are still expected to start with 128GB of storage.

Update: The Weibo user behind the battery capacity rumor has now cautioned that it should be treated with caution and not taken too seriously.

If Apple did a slim phone with less battery life (the type we all used to moan about) or a thicker phone with more battery life (the type we moan about now), which would you choose?

That's not true at all. The 12/13/14 are 162/173/172g respectively and a bigger battery only means more mass. If this 18% increase for the regular 15 would be true AND it would be slightly thicker (=more case volume and thus mass as well), it wouldn't surprise me if it would get around the 195-200g mark. And that's seriously heavy.

Also, that's just the base model we're talking about! The Pro models are always heavier, with the 14 Pro at 206g. I'm sorry, but I can't be the only one who finds that absolutely insane.

Apart from me running a 12 mini and absolutely not wanting to go bigger, a 14 or 15 won't be an option for me. It's just too heavy and big for me to comfortably carry. I'm no Shaq by any means, but I'm also just slightly below average for a man and I've actually tried the 14 a few weeks, but had to return it. And I can't be the only one who thinks this way. This is really getting out of hand (pun intended). Steve Jobs knew what ideal formats were. Everything from the OG iPhone until the 8 and then the mini/SE are fine and for some people a bigger phone might be fine, but for some people it just isn't. And having no options is absolutely terrible. This might be the single biggest reason where Apple might lose me as a customer if they won't make a mini anymore and also don't update the SE in a few years to include the OLED screen in the mini form factor.

My ideal format has always been the 5/5s. Both were 112g, my current 12 mini is 133g which is fine, but the bigger 12 is 162g and that's over the edge for me.

Anyway, if Apple doesn't bring back the mini, then I'm sticking with my 12 mini until there's no upgrade possible anymore for iOS and hope that eventually they'll make the mini-format the new SE variant. And if even that is not going to happen by let's say 2026, then I'd have to go the Android route. Luckily there are still manufacturers like Sony or Asus making phones the size of a mini iPhone or just a tad bigger. I also tried a Samsung A8 2018 for a while and that was just about right as well, slightly bigger but not as big as a 12/13/14. And definitely not as heavy.

Heck, I'd might even start a petition for everyone with somewhat smaller hands. Because my 12 mini is fine right now, and apart from me wanting to upgrade but having no options, the 13 mini makes no sense as it's just 1 year newer. The SE makes no sense because I'd lose the new features I currently have like OLED and Face ID and would also get worse cameras, so what's there to go to for people like me?

How much weight will this add? Are you going to need a laptop case to carry it? People are never happy… “we want better battery life” Apple puts in a bigger battery. “Omg it’s sooooooooo heavy“
