Moment Debuts New MagSafe Mount Options

Moment today added to its existing line of MagSafe-compatible mounts, introducing three new magnetic mounts that can be used with Apple's iPhones. There's a mounting option for filmmakers, a mount that lets you put your iPhone anywhere, and an adapter for using Moment magnetic mounts with non-MagSafe iPhones.

Priced at $99, the Mobile Filmmaker Cage is a two-handed cage that is meant to make it easier to mount mics and lights on the phone when filming video. It has multiple cold shoe, 1/4"-20, and ⅜"-16 attachment points for accessories.

The $40 Strap Anywhere Mount is, as the name suggests, designed to allow iPhone users to strap their iPhones anywhere, from bike handles to exercise equipment, allowing for hands-free operation.

Available for $10, the Moment Stick-On Adapter can be stuck to the back of a non-MagSafe iPhone to add a magnet that makes it compatible with the existing Moment MagSafe accessories. It uses 3M VHB adhesive for a strong bond to the device that it is attached to.

Along with these three products, Moment has updated its Wall Mount and Car Vent Mount with improved adjustable ball heads.

All of Moment's mounts are equipped with its (M)Force magnetic arrays, which it says are stronger than standard accessories for Apple for better attachment. The new accessories can be purchased from the Moment website.

I would LOVE to get that Mobile Filmmaker Cage, and then rig it up with a microphone and light like shown on the website. I'm sort of tempted to just buy the equipment shown in this photo, but I'm wondering if any of you have experience with lights and microphones like this? I basically just want to enhance the lighting and sound of my home videos (personal use for family videos, etc.).

Your family is going to run and hide when you come after them with that contraption.

I do. I’ve owned the Shure MV88+ mic (among others). It’s actually a really well made and good sounding mic, and the accompanying app is well thought out too. What’s nice about the mic is that it retains the settings IN THE MIC so anytime you plug it in, its already set. The video app allows you to access the parameters of the mic (stereo width, polar pattern etc). That all said, I ended up now using a Centrance Mixerface as my main device for audio capture. It’s more expensive but I didn’t want an app to dictate my hardware settings. While I had no problems using the MV88, it always concerned me that if there’s a faulty app update, Im sort of beholden to the apps stability. The Mixerface on the other hand is it’s own recorder as well. One idiosyncrasy about the MV88 is how it behaves with say extention cables and such. It seems the Shure lightning to micro usb is proprietary (a chip in the cable probably sort of has to “see” the iPhone). So some run of the mill amazon cable may not work. Also my friend used his mv88 to connect to an iPad Air and it didn’t see the iPad. Some rudimentary control was possible, but not the usual full range. I know it doesn’t apply here, but just saying. All that said, I actually still do recommend the MV88. for a small portable unit, it sounds quite good. I don’t know anything about using lights unfortunately.

Very cool to see more MagSafe accessories. I'm really surprised we haven't seen more since MagSafe's debut.
