Apps Can Now Try to Stop You From Canceling Subscriptions

No means no.

[edit] Unless the dev offers a discount, in which case No might mean Yes. 😆

It may be annoying, but at the same time it may be a good way to negotiate on subscriptions.

Gross.

Does "Accept Offer" in the From the Developer area and "Keep Subscription" at the bottom do the same thing? Probably not, but it should. Actually, I think the if there's a special offer, the bottom button should change to "Accept Offer". I also think the offer should be in a defined format so there's no confusion or fine print.

Protip: you won't get a cancellation confirmation if you never subscribed in the first place

Apple Introduces Revolutionary New Way to Make Canceling Subscriptions Even More Miserable
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple today announced Retention Messaging, a groundbreaking new technology built from the ground up to help developers remind customers why they should continue paying for services they no longer need, or even want.

“Customers have always loved the simplicity of Apple subscriptions,” said an Apple spokesperson. “Unfortunately, some have discovered the Cancel button.”

With Retention Messaging, developers can now interrupt the cancellation process with personalized pleas, colorful images, special offers, and carefully timed reminders that leaving would be a terrible mistake.

Powered by Apple's advanced Retention Messaging API, developers can tailor their desperation to each subscriber's payment history, ensuring that the most profitable customers receive the most emotionally manipulative experience.

“Canceling a subscription should never be a one-tap decision,” Apple explained. “It should be a magical journey.”

The feature also allows developers to configure waiting periods between retention messages, ensuring customers have adequate time to reconsider their poor judgment.

In keeping with Apple's commitment to privacy, developers will never know why customers want to cancel—only how much money they stand to lose.

Retention Messaging is available now. Access to the API is available by request, because even begging customers to stay requires Apple's permission.
