Apple Will Check Public iCloud Links for Harmful Content Starting in iOS 27.3

Apple says it will start checking public iCloud links for harmful content in iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3, and visionOS 27.3.

iCloud Link Harmful Content Feature 1
Images in iCloud Photos and files in iCloud Drive shared using the "Anyone with the link" option will be "made accessible to Apple" for a content check. Apple doesn't define harmful content, but it could mean malware, malicious files, and/or child sexual abuse material (CSAM) given Apple's mention of law enforcement involvement.

If you try to upload harmful content, Apple reserves the right to move, refuse, modify, remove, or delete the content at any time. Apple may also take action against your Apple Account, including blocking or disabling your Apple Account, blocking the ability to create a new Apple Account with the associated email address or phone number, or if necessary, involving law enforcement.

iCloud files can be shared with "Send a Copy," which sends a file directly, or "Share a Link," which lets someone download it. Link sharing options are "People you choose" or "Anyone with the link," and it's only the latter option that will be evaluated by Apple.

Apple does not say whether links created before the 27.3 updates will be checked.

Apple says content made available to anyone is no longer end-to-end encrypted, even when Advanced Data Protection is on.

iOS 27.3, iPadOS 27.3, macOS 27.3, and visionOS 27.3 are currently available to developers for beta testing, and the software will see a public release in December.

I'm waiting for the comments proclaiming this to be the best safety feature ever, right under people claiming that all of iOS is now sending your data to some overseas country.

In all seriousness though, I feel like this is a good idea on paper, but it doesn't sit well that they can just start doing this. The feature in of itself is not the most concerning, but the implications aren't the best.

It also seems to me that truly nefarious people will just use another service, while honest people's links get analyzed. Reminds me of the whole ordeal years ago with Google CSAM and the dad.

To be fair, there is a difference.

At Microsoft and Google, accounts are suspended as soon as the system detects “harmful files” in the user’s own data storage. That was also the case with the father and thousands other people.

Apple wanted to introduce this system (including automatic reporting to the police) but abandoned it after facing criticism.

The change named in the article explicitly concerns links that are public to anyone.
As another member has already pointed out: Without control, this could very quickly be exploited to spread pornography or worse.

This seems in line with what other companies already do.

I don’t really like it in theory, but in fact I’m not sure how someone can operate a public file sharing service without this.

As they say, any service that allows porn will soon become a porn service.

I’m sure there are other corollaries.

So Macrumors is sharing harmful content and trying to sneak it through in a zip?

The thing to consider here is that you can wake up some day and you are locked out of your iCloud account (just like with above mentioned Google and some Microsoft occurrences when this happened). Even if a false positive - it might take time for you to get access back (if you even can).

Consider what your iCloud account gives you access to and ask yourself if you have a data backup strategy that would survive your cloud accounts being locked out for 2 weeks.
