Taiwan Railways Administration Announces Apple Pay Support for E-Tickets

Taiwan's Railways Administration (TRA) has officially announced support for using Apple Pay when purchasing train tickets with the service's e-booking mobile app.

In a press release on its website, the country's railway operator said it was making the new "‌Apple Pay‌ ticketing service" available from September 7 in order to improve convenience for passengers when booking tickets via the official mobile app.

After passing the initial verification, the payment procedure will be completed via ‌Apple Pay‌, saving users the time it takes to enter their credit card number, said the operator.

Alongside ‌Apple Pay‌ support, the TRA's new membership system is launching a reward scheme where passengers can accumulate redeemable points for using the mobile ticket purchasing mechanism.

Every 50 NT dollar spent is converted into 1 point, and every 2 points points can be redeemed to earn up to a 30% discount on the price of a ticket. Originally, the scheme was only open at the physical ticket windows where points could be used to buy train tickets, but the mobile app now supports the feature, too.

It’s not quite special for public transportation in Taiwan. As someone mentioned above that Taiwan High Speed Rail could book the e-ticket by Apple Pay a couple of years ago.

Furthermore, Kaohsiung MRT has been supporting pass the gates by Apple Pay without even purchasing a ticket. It’s kind of like a single ticket but in digital method.

By the way, most Taiwanese still pay their MRT ticket by EasyCard or iPass Card because it offered 15% off. But I think this option is friendly for someone who doesn’t have a card like a foreigner visits Taiwan for only a short time.

Anyways, I’m more than happy to see it finally happen in Taiwan’s Railway Administration. Especially it’s usually considered as an old, slow organization in technology.
