Apple's New Flagship Union Square Store in San Francisco Opens Saturday

Apple has announced that its downtown San Francisco store at 1 Stockton Street is closing on Friday, May 20 at 9:00 p.m. Pacific, ahead of the grand opening of its new flagship Union Square location on Saturday, May 21 at 10:00 a.m. Pacific. The store will feature Apple's next-generation store design adopted at its new and renovated retail stores like Brussels and Memphis since 2015. Union Square is the focal point of San Francisco's high-end shopping district, located above the city's work-in-progress Central Subway project.

Apple Slated to Move Into New San Francisco Office in Late Summer

Apple could be ready to move into its new 76,000-square-foot leased office space in San Francisco by late summer 2016, according to Reuters. The new office, located at 235 2nd Street in the city's expensive South of Market neighborhood, will reportedly have enough space for about 500 workers upon completion. Apple currently has offices throughout the South Bay suburbs, including Cupertino, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and North San Jose, but some employees face an hour-plus commute along the heavily-trafficked Highway 101. Apple's new San Francisco office could help it recruit key employees who are reluctant to work outside of the city. The iPhone maker's modest expansion into San Francisco follows several other tech companies and startups, including Google, Uber, and Yelp, and its new office will appeal to young workers that prefer the city's nightlife, public transportation, and overall lifestyle. Apple will share space with CBS Interactive, the main tenant. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs advocated for a centralized campus that is "within walking distance of everyone," but increasing competition, lack of available office space in the South Bay area, and acquisitions like Beats and Topsy are likely driving forces behind its expansion beyond Silicon Valley.“Apple’s attitude has always been that you have the privilege of working for Apple, and if you don’t want to do it, there’s someone around the corner who does,” said Matt MacInnis, a former Apple employee who worked on the company’s education business and is now CEO of Inkling, an enterprise technology

Apple Offering $50 Off Apple Watch With Any iPhone Purchase in Select Apple Stores

Apple has started a new limited time in-store promotion that offers customers $50 off an Apple Watch Sport or Apple Watch with the purchase of any new iPhone, including the latest iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, the company confirmed to MacRumors. Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch Hermès models are ineligible for the discount. The promotion is available at participating Apple Store locations in California and Massachusetts, including Burlingame, Chestnut Street, Corte Madera, Hillsdale, San Francisco and Stonestown in the Bay Area, and Boylston Street, Burlington, CambridgeSide and Chestnut Hill in the Boston metro area. Apple confirmed that the promotion runs from October 30 through November 15, 2015, and is not available online. The deal does not require purchasing AppleCare+ or other accessories and add-ons. Apple to Use 'San Francisco' Apple Watch Font in iOS 9 and OS X 10.11

Though iOS 9 and OS X 10.11 are set to debut in three weeks at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, we've heard little detail on the content Apple might include in the new operating system updates. Neither operating system is expected to get a major visual overhaul, but there may be one significant design change for both iOS and OS X -- a new system font. Apple has plans to use the new San Francisco font that was introduced with the Apple Watch to replace the Helvetica Neue font used in iOS 7/iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, according to a report from 9to5Mac. The font will be used for menu items, app names, and more, throughout the operating systems. Ever since switching to particularly thin weights of Helvetica Neue in iOS 7, Apple has been chastised for using a font that emphasizes clean lines over readability, and San Francisco is intended to solve this. According to the sources familiar with the decision to move to the San Francisco type face on iOS and OS X, Apple higher-ups also believe that the new look will serve to refresh its familiar operating systems, helping iOS and OS X to avoid becoming stale. However, some Apple engineers have told us that they are not fans of the new font, which may look particularly rough on non-Retina screens.A condensed sans-serif that's not unlike Helvetica, San Francisco is the first new font Apple has designed in-house in many years. In the 80s and 90s, Apple used several fonts that were created in-house, but the company largely ceased making its own fonts in the early 1990s. Apple's early fonts were also named after major cities,
