SoundCloud Matches Apple Music and Spotify's Student Discounts at $4.99/Month

SoundCloud today announced the launch of discounted student memberships, offering students the chance to subscribe to SoundCloud Go+ for $4.99/month instead of the traditional price of $9.99/month. SoundCloud Go+ for Students is available to all students enrolled at a Title IV degree-granting college or university, and they'll be eligible for up to four consecutive years. Students will gain all of the same perks of SoundCloud Go+ as regular subscribers, including offline listening, ad-free playback, full catalog access with no previews, high-quality audio, and more. Students who already subscribe to SoundCloud Go+ can still subscribe to the student plan after verifying their identity and student status with SoundCloud through the third-party SheerID service. SoundCloud is following in the footsteps of most other music streaming services with today's announcement, since rivals like Apple Music and Spotify have been offering a 50 percent discount for students for a few years now. With these discounts, each service typically offers students the chance to subscribe for as low as $4.99/month, and when they graduate the discount ends. Last month, SoundCloud revealed a new tool that lets creators distribute their music directly to ‌Apple Music‌ and Spotify, allowing artists to easily share their work among the major streaming services. Although SoundCloud has its Go+ consumer streaming service, the company is also known for its SoundCloud Pro and Pro Unlimited services that are aimed at artists, with features like release scheduling, streaming numbers, full embed

SoundCloud's New Tool Lets Artists Distribute Music Directly to Apple Music and Spotify

SoundCloud today announced a new feature that allows creators to distribute their music directly to major streaming music services like Apple Music, Spotify, and Amazon Music (via Billboard). The tool will be included in SoundCloud Pro and Pro Unlimited subscription tiers for artists, and each artist will get 100 percent of earnings back from each streaming platform, meaning SoundCloud won't take any cuts and won't charge additional distribution fees. Artists on SoundCloud Pro or Pro Unlimited who are 18 years or older, control all rights to their original music, have no copyright strikes, and have garnered at least 1,000 plays in the past month will be able to use the tool. These eligible artists will now see a distribution button within the track manager section of SoundCloud, prompting them to select from a list of distribution channels like ‌Apple Music‌, and schedule their release. Last September, Spotify launched a beta for a service similar to SoundCloud's, allowing indie artists to bypass distributors and upload their music directly to the service. SoundCloud is now expanding this idea to support all streaming services, and the company hopes that these companies see it more as a location to scout new up-and-coming artists rather than another streaming rival. "SoundCloud isn’t, nor ever was, meant to be a one-way, mass streaming experience," Trainor explains. "Streaming has risen, people are paying for music again and it’s fantastic what all the major streaming services are doing there. But what SoundCloud has been about, always, is empowering creators

SoundCloud Go+ Subscription Plan Now Supports High Quality Audio Streaming at No Extra Cost

SoundCloud today announced that users on the SoundCloud Go+ subscription plan will now gain access to lossless audio streaming at no additional cost. SoundCloud Go is the company's enhanced streaming service, with three tiers that start at free with 120 million tracks to stream; $4.99/month with 120 million tracks, offline saving, and ad-free streaming; and SoundCloud Go+ with everything in the previous tiers plus 30 million "premium" tracks and high quality audio. When you discover a track on SoundCloud, it’s all about connecting as closely as possible to the creator’s sound and vision. With high quality audio streaming now part of your SoundCloud Go+ subscription, you can experience what’s new, now and next in music on a higher level. High quality audio means that content uploaded to SoundCloud in a lossless format doesn't lose the integrity of its engineered recording and will be available to stream in high quality at 256kbps AAC. Go+ subscribers can opt into this feature in SoundCloud settings > "Streaming quality." SoundCloud has been expanding its streaming service over the years, launching "The Upload" playlist in May 2017 to personally curate a list of songs for each user. In December 2017, the company debuted a new home screen in the iOS app to further lean into user personalization. The revamped launch screen offers curated recommendations, personalized playlists, and "exclusive culture-focused audio content." High quality streaming is a feature that has been missing from Apple Music since its launch in 2015, and one that a few of its rivals

SoundCloud Debuts New Home Experience Focusing on Personalized Music Curation

SoundCloud is today launching a brand new home experience within its iOS app that the company said will make it easier to discover new content from the service's community of creators. The new home tab offers curated recommendations, personalized playlists, and "exclusive culture-focused audio content." All of these recommendations will come direct from SoundCloud's creators, and users will be able to interact with the new content through the app's new and updated look. The new featured playlists will update weekly similar to Spotify's Discover Weekly and Apple Music's Mixes, and include "Hip Hop Supreme" and "In the Mix" playlists for the latest rap tracks and DJ mixes, respectively. For more personalized content, The Upload playlist will now appear on the home screen. This playlist launched earlier in 2017 and offers new music based on your listening habits. In a similar vein, the "More of what you like" playlist matches you up with others in the SoundCloud community and spotlights the tracks it thinks you'll enjoy. Other playlists and charts SoundCloud mentioned will appear on the new home screen include the following: -Stay plugged-in to the tracks gaining traction and generating buzz with the New & Hot charts. -Keep track of the platform’s latest album releases with Fresh Pressed (US only). -Know which tracks are soundtracking your country with the Top 50 charts, based on wherever you are in the world. -Dedicated to serving you what’s next in music and supporting emerging artists, SoundCloud will periodically spotlight what’s happening on

SoundCloud Introduces Daily Personalized Music Curation With 'The Upload'

SoundCloud today launched a new feature called "The Upload," which will act similarly to Apple Music's My New Music Mix and Spotify's Discover Weekly playlists by curating a list of new songs specifically personalized to each user's listening habits. The company said that The Upload will make it much easier to filter through SoundCloud's ever-expanding library of music, which sees new tracks and artists added to the service every day. To find The Upload, users can navigate to the Search tab on iOS and Android, and the Discover tab on the web. Once SoundCloud has an indication of what a user likes, The Upload will begin curating songs daily. The Upload is all about surfacing more of what you’re into, or what you might be, and is the go-to destination for a regularly updated, bespoke playlist of new music relevant to you. With the largest and most diverse music catalog around, we want to make discovery on SoundCloud even easier and we’re utilizing machine learning to offer new ways for you to find more music. This new feature is another opportunity for creators on SoundCloud to get their music heard by our global community and a great way for listeners to be on the pulse of what’s next, now. The new feature gathers and recommends music that has been uploaded to SoundCloud "within the last few days," and takes into account what each user has listened to as well as what they have liked. As the comparable features work on Apple Music and Spotify, the more users listen on SoundCloud, the better The Upload's recommendations become. In February, SoundCloud introduced

Latest SoundCloud App Update Adds Google Chromecast Support

SoundCloud has added support for Google Chromecast in the latest update to its iOS app, almost two years after support for the feature arrived on the Android version. After updating the SoundCloud app, users of the music streaming service will also be able to cast songs from SoundCloud Go+, the company's paid subscription plan, to their TV and speakers. Now users with a SoundCloud Go+ subscription can stream their complete catalog through Google Chromecast. We also enabled shared playback, so multiple users can control what’s playing. Finally, we upgraded both of the mobile apps and the receiver to provide a consistent and streamlined experience.Whenever a song is played over Chromecast, SoundCloud offers up song and album suggestions for adding to the currently streamed track list. A SoundCloud Go budget tier costs $4.99 per month, and includes access to over 120 million tracks, offline listening and no ads. SoundCloud+ costs $9.99, and includes access to a wider selection of 150 million songs and excludes previews from the library. Non-paying listeners can still listen to tracks with ads, but can't download songs for offline listening. The SoundCloud app is a free download for iPhone and iPad available from the App Store. SoundCloud Launches Cheaper $4.99 Streaming Subscription Plan

SoundCloud has introduced a new lower priced subscription plan to entice users to sign up to its music streaming service, less than a year after its paid membership scheme was launched (via The Verge). The new SoundCloud Go budget tier costs $4.99 per month, half the price of the previous low cost subscription option that rolled out last March. Membership gives users access to over 120 million tracks, no ads, and the ability to save music offline on mobile. The original $9.99 plan remains as SoundCloud Go+, which includes access to a wider selection of 150 million songs and excludes previews from the library. According to the German company, the Go+ plan will also include additional product features to be announced later this year. The new budget $4.99 plan means SoundCloud now undercuts Spotify, Apple Music, Tidal, and Google Play Music, all of whose options start at $9.99. SoundCloud will be hoping the new pricing tier turns more of its 175 million users into paying subscribers, although how many is unclear – the company has never released a figure for its paying user base. SoundCloud Go and SoundCloud Go+ membership plans are available in the U.S., UK, Ireland, France, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Germany, with some regional price

Spotify in 'Advanced Talks' to Purchase SoundCloud

Streaming music service and Apple Music rival Spotify is in "advanced talks" to acquire audio distribution platform SoundCloud, reports Financial Times. Little information is available on the terms of the potential deal at this time. SoundCloud, which allows users to upload, promote, and share audio recordings ranging from music to podcasts, has upwards of 175 million total listeners a month, which could bring a huge influx of customers to Spotify and give it an edge over Apple. Spotify has 40 million paying subscribers compared to Apple Music's 17 million paying subscribers, but Apple Music's numbers have been growing steadily since its 2015 launch. Apple Music is also backed by the strength of Apple's subscriber base, which dwarfs that of most other music services and gives the company a huge pool of potential future subscribers. As competition heats up between Spotify and Apple Music, the two have become bitter rivals and have been involved in some public battles over issues like exclusivity, the App Store, and free listening tiers in recent months. SoundCloud recently introduced a new subscription service designed to compete with Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, and other music streaming options. SoundCloud Go, priced at $9.99, gives users on-demand ad-free access to 125 million tracks, including premium licensed content. With a SoundCloud acquisition, Spotify could potentially add all of that user-created content to its own music catalog, giving customers more original content to listen to along with its existing licensed

Soundcloud’s New $9.99 Streaming Service to Compete With Apple Music [Updated]

In a recent update to its iOS app, popular streaming music platform Soundcloud added a subscription model into the service that will provide users with a few premium monthly upgrades on top of the discoverability and personalization previously offered. As discovered by The Verge, the service is called "Soundcloud Go" and will run users $12.99 on a monthly basis if purchased through the App Store, with a free 30 day trial to test the waters beforehand. Outside of the iOS App Store, SoundCloud Go will cost $9.99/month. The announcement has yet to be made official by Soundcloud, but in the version 4.0.0 update release notes, the company lists a few ways upgrading to the monthly subscription could benefit its users. These advantages include a bolstered track list, the ability to listen offline, and the removal of interspersed advertisements within playlists. Upgrade to SoundCloud Go to: - Play all tracks Access a newly expanded catalog of everything from Grammy-winners to garage bands - Listen offline Listen to your favorite tracks anytime, anywhere, with or without a signal - Go ad-free Listen without any ad interruptions Soundcloud Go joins a growing list of streaming music services on offer for users to choose from, most of which are available on iOS for $9.99 per month: Apple Music, Spotify Premium, and Tidal, among others. There are variations on monthly subscriptions when factoring in family plans and an upper-tier "Tidal HiFi" offering that promises better quality sound for $19.99/month, but for the most part SoundCloud Go will enter the streaming
