Apple to Discontinue Newsstand, Launch Free Flipboard-Like App to Feature News Content

Apple is planning to do away with Newsstand, its central app that stores newspaper and magazine subscriptions for users, according to sources who spoke with Re/code. In its place, the company will introduce a new Flipboard-style aggregation experience that will showcase curated lists of articles and content for individual customers. The partners for the new app will include ESPN, The New York Times, Conde Nast and Hearst, with the new app focused on providing "samples" of content. Since magazines and newspapers were required to be located within the Newsstand app, many of Apple's partners complained of buried content with the introduction of Newsstand. With the new structure in place, individual magazines and publications will sell their own app experiences within the App Store, allowing companies to push their content directly to a user's device without having to navigate through Apple's Newsstand app. While Apple is said to be adjusting its revenue cut for some types of subscription content, the company will reportedly continue to take its traditional 30 percent revenue cut from subscriptions within these services currently available in Newsstand. MacRumors had previously heard Apple was meeting with publishers about the upcoming discontinuation of Newsstand, but was unable to obtain corroborating information. European App Store Price Increase Turns Off Auto-Renewing Subscriptions

Apple last week implemented price increases for App Store content throughout the European Union and in several other countries, rebalancing the company's pricing as exchange rates have shifted and new taxes have gone into effect in some countries. One side effect of that change, however, is that auto-renewing subscriptions for app content have been automatically turned off for any pricing tiers that saw increases due to Apple's changes. The issue was noticed by a MacRumors reader and also highlighted by Popular Science UK editor Tom Royal today. Users have so far apparently not been notified that auto-renewals have been turned off following the price increases, although in the examples we've seen the renewal dates are still several weeks into the future. It is understandable that Apple may want or need to receive consent from customers before automatically raising recurring subscription fees, but so far neither publishers nor users have been notified of this issue and they are only discovering it for themselves when digging into the subscription settings for their apps. Apple was proactive about notifying app developers of impending price increases roughly a day and a half of time, but additional information on the effect those changes are having on recurring subscriptions was not included. As a result, some users may suddenly find themselves losing access to their content while publishers may lose out from users who simply elect not to follow up on the issue and resubscribe, regardless of whether the new rates themselves would be a determining factor.

New Apple Print Ads Feature iPad Mini and Newsstand

9to5Mac has pooled together some images of a new set of print ads from Apple. The ads show off the 7.9-inch iPad mini's Newsstand capabilities on the back covers of magazines like The New Yorker and Time. The ads tout that the magazines that people are reading are also available on the iPad mini in a digital format in a package smaller than the traditional print magazine size. Depicting the iPad mini at its actual size not only offers a comparison to the print versions but also highlights how the iPad may be better for periodicals from Newsstand than the full-sized iPad because of its smaller size and lighter weight.
