Kuo: Apple's Upcoming Mixed Reality Headset to Feature 15 Camera Modules

Apple's upcoming mixed reality headset will feature a total of 15 optical camera modules, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said this evening in a research note obtained by MacRumors.

Eight of the 15 camera modules will be used for see-through augmented reality experiences, six modules will be used for "innovative biometrics," and one camera module will be used for environmental detection. Largan will supply many of the 15 camera lenses.

Kuo's prediction of the number of cameras expected in the mixed reality headset comes following a report yesterday that shared several details on the device, which Kuo believes will launch in 2022.

The headset will be "portable" with independent computing power and storage, but not "mobile" like an iPhone. Current prototypes weigh in at 200 to 300 grams, but the final weight may be reduced to 100 to 200 grams should Apple be able to solve technical problems.

Kuo believes that Apple's mixed reality headset will be significantly lighter than many VR devices on the market, and that it will provide an "immersive experience that is significantly better than existing VR products." Kuo expects the headset to be priced at around $1000, and it will feature high-end micro-OLED displays.

For more on what we're expecting from the AR/VR headset that Apple has in development, we have a full roundup with all of the rumors we've heard so far. The roundup also has details on the smart glasses that Apple is working on, which will be released after the headset.

This guy has all the scoops doesn’t he? Damn...we are going to know exactly what the specs of this thing is going to be even before it is announced at an Apple Special Event! Insane!
Kuo is the guy that provided the exact display resolution of iPhone X at least 6 months before any other Apple analyst. Also the first to say iPhone X wouldn't have Touch ID.

1k for an Apple device with 15 cameras? Too cheap to be true. Maybe 1k is just the price of AppleCare.

DUM.

America is turning into a bunch of dummies. spending alot of time gaming and using DUM virtual reality Headsets like this Apple prototype.

How about we all be as eager about Biology, Math and science.

Whats needed to cure many diseases out there like Cancer and COVID?

APPLE would rather you sit on your ass with virtual reality goggles playing video games all day

Meanwhile Chinese students are hitting the books and learning what is needed to compete in todays world.
Right, we're all required to use these devices instead of solving world hunger. And we're all capable of curing diseases. It's all a zero-sum game where you have to be spending all of your time on a noble cause, or you're DUM (I'm not sure what that stands for since dumb is spelled dumb? Are you trying to say this is dumb, and both spelling it wrong and capitalizing it incorrectly?)

Scientists never use VR or play video games. Mathematicians don't play games. I bet the whole Space X team has never played Mario. A VR/AR system has no application in math or science or biology at all, none.

You, clearly, aren't wasting your time on a website about rumors, reading about a VR device, and then commenting on it. You've dedicated all your free time to doing active things, not sitting on your ass, reading this website, and sitting on your ass commenting on it. You're out there, making a difference.

Let's all become biologists, mathematicians and scientists, none of us should start a company, be a CEO, work in a factory, own a restaurant, paint houses.

My bet is still with Oculus headsets, I love my quest 2 and plan on getting a quest pro model when they are released.
It is a shame that Oculus, now owned by Facebook, is shifting to require an active Facebook account to even use the device. Automatically rules it out as an option I’m willing to consider, unfortunately.

Kuo’s info comes from sources inside Apple’s supply chain not from Apple Park. He has a general idea of what Apple is working on but he doesn’t know intricate details like timing of release or pricing.
