More Claims of Taller Next-Generation iPhone Surface Alongside Video

Nowhereelse.fr noticed (Google translation) that a mobile phone repair shop has posted a new YouTube video showing what is claimed to be the LCD and digitizer for the next-generation iPhone, revealing a slightly taller form factor than that of the existing iPhone.


The part looks similar, but not identical, to photos of the same part posted in early February. The earlier photos showed a reflective surface just above the earpiece slot, while the new video shows a lack of such a physical feature. Conversely, the new video shows a small hole to the left of the earpiece slot that is presumed to be for a forward-facing camera. That hole was absent in the earlier set of photos.

As we've noted before, it is not unusual for Asian suppliers to offer parts for claimed future-generation iPhone and iPod products. While some appear to have been true leaks, many of the claims have turned out to be incorrect.

My 3Gs iPhone has the same hole to the left of the earpiece... It's for the proximity sensor.

Photoshopped. You can tell by the obvious shaky video and its resolution, along with the accompanying pixelation around such parts. :rolleyes:

In all seriousness, I think it could happen, but this would break the trend of cases and most accessories that have been able to unintentionally cover 2 generations of the iPhone. Oh well. It's not like I own them.

If what he has is also the glass front of the device, none of the iPhones have that actual hole penetrating all the way through, including the glass. However, if the glass is not there, then you are definitely correct. I can't quite tell though.

this video could have easily been 3:30 shorter.

the iPhone 3G (3GS) was slightly wider than the original iPhone, so now the 4th gen iPhone will be slightly taller. exciting. My guess is that hole would be for a message indicator (like the blackberry phones), their have been too many rumor let downs of front facing cameras.

First off, that song makes me want to bash my head against a wall. And their camera person needs to learn about focus, exposure and white balance.

Otherwise, I wonder if they can find out the resolution of the display they have in-hand. I don't think a slightly taller phone matters all that much, I think the resolution is a much more important question to answer. Personally, if its not a significant jump, I'm going for that Sprint HTC EVO 4G with WiMax and just picking up a next-gen iPod Touch. iPhone's hardware is getting very behind.

don't know if it's real or not, but it would be nice if apple would make at least some attempt to catch up to the current phone manufacturers in terms of hardware (especially a high res screen).

Seems like this is a good idea, but if fact I'd like to see the screen a little wider, even a few mm to get closer to the physical edge of the bezel.

With all the iPad stuff I am craving info on the next iPhone...it is, after all, just a few months away from the 2-year contract expiration for us early 3G adopters.

Forward camera would be nice. I'm not bothered by a slightly taller factor, slips into my pocket fine.

If this is an actual part produced by Apple, I could see them putting these things out there to flush out leaks, or more importantly testing potential manufacturers.
