MacBook Pro With Touch Display: 15 More Details Revealed

Apple on Wednesday unveiled new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with touch-enabled OLED displays, and more details about them continue to be shared by tech reporters who were invited to Apple's hands-on experience in Los Angeles.

Nicolas Lellouche of the French website Numerama shared 15 details about the new MacBook Pro models in an article and a social media post. Some of this information has already surfaced, but he provided a useful summary:

  • Apple said the keyboard and trackpad remain the primary input methods, with touch input available as an additional option for those who want it.
  • Apple said there is now a generation of young creators who grew up using touchscreens, so it felt the timing was right to bring the functionality to the Mac.
  • Apple said music creators prefer touch over trackpads for controlling virtual instruments.
  • "Traffic light" controls in the top-left corner of macOS windows expand when pressed.
  • Items in a list become more spaced out when touched.
  • A swipe up from the bottom of the screen brings up the Dock.
  • A swipe down from the top of the screen brings up Spotlight/Siri AI.
  • A long press is equivalent to a right click.
  • Holding a window and quickly moving it left or right triggers Split View.
  • If you close your Mac while your finger is touching the display, touch input is temporarily deactivated to prevent accidental touches.
  • The camera is stabilized so it does not shake on video calls when you touch the screen.
  • You cannot wake the MacBook Pro by touching the screen.
  • Multi-touch supports up to 10 fingers at the same time. No word yet on toes (kidding).
  • Live Activities from iPhone apps can appear in the Dynamic Island.
  • There are settings that allow you to turn off touch input and the illuminated Apple logo on the MacBook Pro's lid.

The new MacBook Pro models can be pre-ordered now and launch Friday, November 6.

RIP, MacBook Ultra

Apple today sent out invites for an experience in Los Angeles on Wednesday, October 28, and the "Pro and tell" tagline on the invitation likely means that the rumored MacBook models with touch-enabled OLED displays will stick with MacBook Pro branding instead of the once-rumored "MacBook Ultra" name. The long-rumored "iPhone Ultra" ended up being named iPhone Duo, so speculation that Apple...

"Touching your screen will not wake up your Mac" seems like an odd omission. If I'm ready to touch the screen, it should wake up when I do it.

I've never had the urge to touch a laptop or a desktop screen, ever. I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall when these discussions were taking place at Apple - would have been a fascinating insight into how this company functions.

If I were to control virtual instruments via the touch screen, I would want the screen to be able to laid flat on the table. Apple should know this but they decided not to do it and perhaps delays it on purpose to a "future" upgrade.

Because it isn't. Your machine is meant to be touched, so you touch the screen when you're ready. I don't see why you would have to unlock it with your finger first. Then again, it might be a better idea for computers with FaceID.
When a MacBook is asleep, it locks. Unlocking requires typing a password or using Touch ID. Your hands are already on the keyboard.

Who would reach to touch the screen just to move your hands right back down?

A lot of younger people raised on Chromebooks and iPads do just assume laptop screens are touch-enabled. Not sure they’re buying $4000 laptops though.
Someone in their early 30s would be about 16 or 17 when iPad 2 launched. It's not that far fetched someone in their 30s would purchase a $3,000 MacBook Pro.
