Apple Memory Supplier Explores U.S. Manufacturing With Intel

Apple memory supplier SK Hynix is in exploratory talks with Intel about manufacturing memory chips in the United States for the first time, according to Reuters.

One option would see the South Korean chipmaker lease part of Intel's planned manufacturing complex in Ohio. Another would involve a joint venture with Intel and major cloud providers seeking to secure memory supplies, people familiar with the discussions said. No decisions have been made, and other arrangements remain possible.

SK Hynix supplies Apple with memory alongside Samsung and Micron. The discussions come as AI infrastructure spending puts pressure on the supply of memory for consumer devices, including iPhones and Macs. Chipmakers have been directing more production capacity toward high-bandwidth memory (HBM) for AI processors, leaving smartphone and computer manufacturers competing for available supplies.

In February, Apple reportedly agreed to pay Samsung twice as much for memory chips needed for iPhone 17 production. More recently, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said Apple was reducing its 2026 hardware shipment plans because of DRAM shortages, with supply constraints also affecting the Mac Studio, Mac mini, and MacBook Air.

It remains unclear which types of memory SK Hynix would manufacture under a potential agreement with Intel. Its products include DRAM used in smartphones, computers, and servers, NAND flash storage, and HBM for AI processors. The report does not mention whether a U.S. facility would produce memory for Apple devices.

SK Hynix already has an advanced packaging facility under construction in West Lafayette, Indiana. That project will package DRAM wafers manufactured in South Korea into HBM chips, rather than fabricate the wafers domestically.

Apple updated its Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad product pages around August 25 to drop all Intel-based Macs from the compatibility lists for the accessories, and this week it updated some related tech specs pages to reflect these changes. Given the Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad still work with Intel Macs, it is unclear why the accessories are now considered to be compatible with Apple...

Great, but to be clear, this is half a decade away at best. RAMageddon isn't going to be solved for years. Building a RAM foundry is the bottleneck that the industry is still trying to solve to meet the spike in demand for AI servers. Tooling and construction alone will take 2-3 years, setting up in a country without the Human Resources and expertise will add years to that timeline.

at this point given the prices and lead times, looks like it could be profitable anywhere in the short term. But who knows what the future will bring
Models are getting more efficient but demand growth is outpacing those savings. If Apple helps reorient the field with its consumer scale (billions of personal devices), AI could begin to skew towards local models and decentralize away from mega data centres helping to offset individual AI use demand to devices in our pockets and homes. Righting this ship is still going to take years.

I'm sure there are valid reasons for why Asia has dominated in this type tech manufacturing but it's good to see geographical diversification of what has become important infrastructure. I suspect it will be years in the making and won't do much for shortages and prices in the near term, but in the long-term seeing these things being made in other regions can only be a good thing.

I don't know the progress of the Intel fabs in Ohio, but if they were going to lease fab space there, this could be online in a year or so

Impossible before 2030s. Let's just use some basic logic.

Intel's Ohio Mod 1 shell is targeted for construction completion in 2030. That's just the physical space.

What about the tools? You know, the EUV and etch/deposition tools from ASML, Lam, KLA? Those have a multi-year backlog.

This is a 2030s project if all contracts gets signed today. Anything earlier is a pipe dream.

Calling Intel a "beggar" is a very 2024 narrative. In late 2026, Intel is shipping a cutting-edge node and has signed deals to be a major player as an external fab. It just raised $20 billion selling shares at 5x the multiple of their low in 2024. It has multiple options for how to use the Ohio space when you consider that demand continues to outstrip supply in the semiconductor industry for the foreseeable future.
If things are better for intel, why are they still sticking to their 2025 published timeline;

* Original target: first fab operating by the end of 2025. The Ohio (“Ohio One”) project has slowed by at least five years versus its original plan.
* Current target: first fab construction completed in 2030, with operations in 2030–31; second fab completed in 2031, operating in 2032.

So construction/production has been pushed back roughly 5–7 years, depending on whether you compare completion or operations. Intel says work continues, but at a slower pace to match demand and manage capital.

So far, intel has not announced a new, revised timeline for the New Albany, Ohio project.
