iOS 27 Features You Can't Use in the EU

Apple announced a range of new iOS 27 features at WWDC this week, but some of them won't be available in the European Union at launch.

The biggest glaring omission is Siri AI on iPhone and iPad. Apple says the new chatbot-style ‌Siri‌ experience, the dedicated ‌Siri‌ app for revisiting conversations, expanded Visual Intelligence features, integrated Writing Tools, and the new ‌Siri‌ mode in the Camera app will not be available in the EU when ‌iOS 27‌ and iPadOS 27 are released later this year.

Apple has blamed the EU's Digital Markets Act, saying regulators did not accept its proposed privacy and security solutions for supporting other virtual assistants. The European Commission has pushed back, however, saying the decision is "Apple's, and Apple's only." The Commission said Apple was simply unable to develop interoperability solutions that meet essential EU privacy and security standards.

A separate ‌iOS 27‌ feature called Tap to Share is also unavailable in the European Economic Area, which includes the EU plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Norway. The feature lets merchants exchange customer details, passes, receipts, cart information, and Apple Pay- related data with a tap during Tap to Pay sessions.

For now, there seems to be no obvious compromise between the EU and Apple with regards to ‌Siri‌ AI. Until that changes, it's unlikely to reach EU iPhones and iPads. Apple has said it hopes to eventually bring ‌‌Siri‌‌ AI to the EU and will continue to engage with regulators, but the company has offered no timeline.
