Likely Amazon wants to move inventory and have potential buyers come to their page. Amazon, Best Buy and other retailers run their own sales independent of Apple. In fact, unless you need something custom from Apple, it’s best to just buy it from their retail partners. You can add AppleCare to any Apple device no matter where you buy it.
It's pretty obvious that Apple uses retailers to run sales for them and offload inventory.

Almost beats out some of the education pricing. The 512GB storage model with 16GB of RAM is perfect for so many people. The price of $689 is a very good deal on it.

Mini m5 incoming?
Probably not yet or soon. Apple as of lately ramped up discounts across stores to match or excel edu discount - my subjective guess is they are ramping up sales figures by lowering margins because the stock is under pressure to show market beats which is hard given latest news, so they are trying to sell more units for less money to overall capture more sales.

I wonder if all these Apple sale prices indicate that Apple sales are down ?

Apple doesn’t run sales themselves in order to have their products sold in retailers
