Apple Releases Mid-2010 MacBook Pro Video Update for Snow Leopard

Apple today released MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 (Snow Leopard), a new update addressing issues with freezing and blank video on mid-2010 MacBook Pro models.

This update addresses an issue where MacBook Pro (15-inch Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video.

The update is a Snow Leopard version of the Lion update released three weeks ago. Additional information on the issue is available in a support document, although that document has not yet been updated to list the new software update as a first step for Snow Leopard users.

Apple has determined that a small number of MacBook Pro (15-inch, Mid 2010) computers may intermittently freeze or stop displaying video on the built-in display or on an external display connected to the MacBook Pro. In this situation, you may also see a restart warning message before the video is lost or the display turns black or gray. Affected computers were manufactured between April 2010 and February 2011.

MacBook Pro Video Update 1.0 for Snow Leopard weighs in at 51.45 MB and requires Mac OS X 10.6.8.

I never had this issue on Snow Leopard or Lion, but I use that program that allows you to disable hardware switching and almost always leave my MBP on integrated Intel mode.

I've had his problem since 10.6.7 or 10.6.8. It only happened when connecting to an external monitor but after Lion, it happened frequently using the computer normally. Mission Control is usually the trigger.

I have been using gfx status to force Intel graphics but then I can't power an external monitor. Also, animations are choppier. Basically I have an overweight MacBook Air which I am not happy about. I'm really disappointed with Apple/nVidia's quality because this machine actually replaced my '08 MBP which had so many problems including the infamous graphics problem.

Apple replaced my logic board for this exact problem around a week before they released the lion fix. It wasn't a huge inconvenience, but for an $600 fix it would have been nice to know a software fix was in the pipes.

Will the 3gbit on mid-'09 MBPs issue ever be addressed... I wish they had recalled / accepted them in for a logic board swap-out...

I'm not sure I have the issue described, but I have one fo the first mid-2010 MBPs. I get more spinning beach balls than I'd like, and I used to get the "Your computer needs to be shut down" freeze scree, although I haven't seen it since probably late 2010. Also once I installed 10.6.8, I wasn't able to use an external monitor anymore - maybe this fixes it?

Me too. However, the issue for me was so random and infrequent that it'll be a while before I'm truly convinced that it's fixed. :cool:
