MagicWand Physically Connects Your Keyboard and Magic Trackpad

A new product called Magic Wand from TwelveSouth allows Mac users to connect their Apple Wireless Keyboard to the Magic Trackpad into a single unit.

What is MagicWand? Its a cool little accessory that connects Apples Magic Trackpad to your Apple Wireless Keyboard, creating the sleek, one-piece input device youve been imagining.

The accessory lets you carry around your keyboard and Magic Trackpad as a single unit. A video shows it in action:

The video shows how you attach your devices to it, and it can be used in a left or right handed configuration. Magic Wand costs $29.99.

The Bluefin from MeshWe is similar to the Magic Wand, but lets you use the click feature of the trackpad. This is the best setup I've come across for controlling a mac mini home theater. The idea of being able to have full use of the keyboard and trackpad together either at your desk or on your lap is pretty sweet.

Idea: $0, at a bar or cafe or at your desktop
Mechanical Engineering: ($500)
Manufacturing Documentation and Management: ($5000)
Tool Up Fee: ($10,000)
Video Production Fee: ($5000)
Promotion: ($10,000)
Initial production run of 10,000 units: ($5000)

Assuming first lot built sold at full retail Price $300,000

About $250,000 profit for about a month of work. Not bad, not bad at all.

$290,000 actually - sounds pedantic, but $10,000 is quite a big difference.

What about materials? Alumin(i)um isn't cheap. And what about markup prices for selling to chain stores? Markups can be more than 50% sometimes. And sales, marketing, salaries of staff... All need to be included.

Your profit of $250,000 is a huge overestimate. Even if they eventually made a decent return of $100k per month, that kind of profit for a small company sounds about right.

Am I the only one who thinks $29 sounds an okay price?

I assume it doesn't work with the extended keyboard? :(

Oh well, maybe they'll be reading this comment.

I don't know anyone who has actually used or owns a magic trackpad. As a matter of fact I actually forget they exist from time to time. Are these things actually popular now?

wow, $29.99.

Yeah, the price is pretty high for a simple piece of metal/plastic, but that's what you get after figuring in the Apple Tax. I keep hoping that the Apple Tax will decline with the new-found popularity of the platform, but that seems to be only mildly the case.

I assume it doesn't work with the extended keyboard? :(

It looks like it snaps onto the round base that they both share. I have the extended keyboard, which is wired, and this seems more useful for people who carry it around the house or something. The extended keyboard also has an odd squared off base that probably wouldn't fit both devices. I suppose they could make one side that fits the keyboard, and one side for the trackpad, but then it wouldn't be lefty/righty switchable like this is. I think most new macs are shipping with the wireless keyboard, so they probably went for the highest market first. But maybe they will add it later on.

As for me, I want that patented iMac that folds down at an angle so that I can use it's touchscreen surface. So I'll just hold out for now!

Well done to the designers of this product. Though I am very surprised that apple haven't released an all in one unit.
