macOS 15.2: Selectively Screen Share to Your Apple TV

by

In macOS Sequoia 15.2, Apple has added some new AirPlay features that allow you to selectively choose which elements of your screen you wish to stream to an Apple TV.

The changes to the AirPlay interface offer more control over what you share on-screen when streaming something on your Mac to an Apple TV. You can now choose to share your entire screen, a specific app or window, or an extended display.

This focused sharing capability lets you, say, display a presentation or a slideshow of photos on a TV's larger screen while keeping the rest of your Mac's desktop content private. You can also set your choice to be the default option.

The interface for the new options will appear when you select Screen Mirroring in the menu bar's Control Center, choose an Apple TV on the same network, and select Choose Content. Once you've made your content streaming choice, you can change it at any time by returning to the Screen Mirroring menu.

Notably, the same menu for selecting between full-screen, app-specific, or window sharing also appears when connecting a Mac to a TV via HDMI. Previously, macOS only supported full-screen mirroring to an Apple TV, with no option to isolate specific portions of the display, so the new addition should be a boon for anyone who regularly streams content from their Mac desktop.
