Apple Responds to iPhone Duo Display Cracking Reports

Shortly after the iPhone Duo launched, a few users reported hinge issues that were causing cracks in the inner display. Apple has now responded to the reports in a statement to MacRumors, saying a small number of units are affected.

The response to iPhone Duo from early users has been incredibly positive, and we are seeing exciting things from developers who are rapidly updating their apps to take advantage of its unique form factor. We are aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units. If users experience issues with their iPhone Duo display, they should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apple did not say what causes the cracking, or if a fix is planned. Affected users have been able to get in-store replacements, though with limited stock available, some are having to wait.

According to Apple, the problem is limited in scope. Most users are not going to see an issue with their ‌iPhone Duo‌ display, and it's not a defect people have to worry about showing up over time. On affected units, the crack seems to show up shortly after purchase.

It is our understanding that some of the images of alleged cracking are AI-generated, which makes it harder to determine the actual scope of the problem.

Many of the iPhone Duos experiencing issues cracked in the same place on the lower half of the inner display. The crack is along the hinge, and users say there is a stuck feeling and sometimes a popping noise just before the damage appears.

iFixit took apart the ‌iPhone Duo‌ and found several possible causes for the hinge failure. The site said multiple components converge in that location, and it's possible a center support bar in the hinge that's supposed to retract isn't doing so, leading to damage.

Crackgate? iPhone Duo Owners Report Screens Breaking Along the Hinge

Friday October 23, 2026 11:05 am PDT by
Some iPhone Duos are already experiencing hinge issues that cause display cracks, based on photos shared on Reddit and the MacRumors forums. Almost all of the display faults are right along the hinge, and most result in a line of bright pixels across one side of the screen. An iPhone Duo owner in Australia said his device cracked after being opened fewer than 20 times, and there was no...

The usual "a small number" response. Let's hope it stays that way. All I know is, apple care aside, if my $2,000 duo did that, I would be livid. I know many will disagree but there is no excuse for even one of these duos to crack like this. Apple took their time in foldable for a reason, or so we thought.

Apple is selling millions of Duos, there's bound to be some that have a defect from the factory - it's normal for every mass-produced product. The handful of units with a defect is what makes headlines, not the other million+ units that are perfect.

What I do think is more of a concern is how getting sand or dirt on the hinge can potentially render the device inoperable. I don't understand how it has an IP68 rating. I know this is a common failure point for other foldables as well, but I thought Apple would come up with some clever engineering to better protect the hinge.

What a ridiculous statement.

It’s only been available for a few days, so technically they’re all in the period of “shortly after purchase”.

Apple Introduces Revolutionary New Experience for iPhone Duo
CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA — Apple today addressed reports of iPhone Duo screens cracking after just a handful of folds, calling the phenomenon “a groundbreaking advancement in personalized display technology.”

“We've always believed in pushing boundaries,” said an Apple spokesperson. “Now we're breaking them. Literally.”

Apple is calling the innovation Dynamic Fracture™, a revolutionary feature that gives certain Duos a unique structural personality.

“Competitors require thousands of folds before their displays fail. We've achieved similar results in fewer than 20. That's innovation.”

Apple emphasized that the iPhone Duo w/ Dynamic Fracture™ is an exceptionally exclusive, limited-edition product, with only a small number of units being released.

“We believe scarcity creates value. And nothing says exclusivity like a $2,000 phone that's nearly impossible to obtain and potentially one of only a few.”

Apple reminded customers that repeatedly opening and closing a folding phone constitutes unusually demanding use.
