In the wake of Apple's iPhone 3G announcement and AT&T's press release detailing their new agreement with Apple, additional details are surfacing regarding the companies' attempts to reduce the number of customers unlocking their iPhones for use on other carriers.

Gizmodo spoke with AT&T's President of National Distribution Glenn Lurie, who revealed that all iPhone activations will take place in-store. This is in contrast to the current system in which customers may activate their iPhones from home using iTunes. Additionally, Reuters reports that AT&T has said that purchasers who do not activate their iPhones within 30 days will be subject to penalties. No details on these proposed penalties have been made public.

WWDC 2008 continues throughout the week, but the remainder of the contents are under non-disclosure agreements, so few other official announcements will be made.

AT&T has issued a press release providing additional details about service plans for the iPhone 3G in the U.S. First of all, AT&T confirmed that it remains the exclusive U.S. carrier for the iPhone, which will be available starting on July 11th.

The new iPhones will cost $199 (8GB) and $299 (16GB) with an unlimited 3G data plan costing $30/month. This is an increase from the current $20/month unlimited EDGE data plan for the 1st generation iPhone. Voice plans continue to start at $39.99, but no additional details are provided.

Meanwhile, AT&T reveals that Apple will no longer receive the revenue sharing from each users plans. It was highly publicized that AT&T paid Apple a portion of its monthly recurring service charges for each iPhone user. Under the new agreement, there is no revenue sharing. AT&T is presumably directing that money towards the $200 subsidy for the iPhone.

Update: Arstechnica was able to speak to an AT&T representative who claims that if existing iPhone owners buy an iPhone 3G, the new 2 year contract replaces the current contract rather than extending it.

Apple made a number of announcements at the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote today at Moscone West in San Francisco, CA. One other announcement that Apple made during the keynote was that they would be providing developers with a preview of Mac OS X 10.6 ("Snow Leopard") this afternoon. This session, however, will be covered under non-disclosure, but Apple has released some information about Snow Leopard already.

At today's Worldwide Developers Conference Keynote address, Apple previewed iPhone Firmware 2.0 and highlighted some additional features of the developer SDK.

New Features
In addition to features that were previewed at the iPhone Software Roadmap event, Apple announced new features of Firmware 2.0 and the SDK, including:

- contact searching
- complete iWork document support
- complete Office document support (now includes PowerPoint)
- bulk delete and move for Mail
- save images you receive
- scientific calculator in landscape mode
- parental controls
- language

In addition, Apple announced a method for developers to have their applications receive information while not in use. Apple had previously said that they would not allow background applications to run on the iPhone, to the widespread dismay of developers who need such functionality to server-side information. As a response, Apple has implemented a notification feature into the SDK which will allow applications to be alerted of server-side events (i.e. new IM received, new mail, etc) without having to run in the background and eat CPU cycles. This functionality is scheduled to be delivered in September, however it will be seeded to developers "soon."

Availability
iPhone Firmware 2.0 will be available for free to existing iPhone customers in "early July". The firmware will also be available for iPod Touch users for $9.95.

At the beginning of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference keynote today, Apple CEO Steve Jobs highlighted some of the interest that has been shown from the enterprise market since the preview of iPhone Firmware 2.0 and the Software Development Kit.

According to Apple, 35% of the Fortune 500, including the top 5 commercial banks, top 5 securities firms, 6 of 7 top airlines, 8 of 10 top Pharmaceutical companies, and 8 of 10 top Entertainment companies, and higher education customers have all contacted Apple regarding the capabilities presented.

Sega Super Monkey Ball
Initially previewed at the SDK launch, Super Monkey Ball now includes over 100 levels. In playing through the last world, Sega demonstrated how they used the iPhone's accelerometer to control the movement of the character.

Loopt
Loopt is described as location-aware social networking. The app displays a map with pins representing where your friends are. User profiles can show a log of where you've gone and its simple to blog, send in a photo, text, or call your friends.

As rumored, Apple has announced MobileMe, described by Apple Vice President for product marketing Phil Schiller as "Exchange for the rest of us."

After the Worldwide Developers Conference Keynote today, Apple previewed OS 10.6 "Snow Leopard." True to rumors, the release will focus on performance rather than new features.

We have delivered more than a thousand new features to OS X in just seven years and Snow Leopard lays the foundation for thousands more, said Bertrand Serlet, Apples senior vice president of Software Engineering. In our continued effort to deliver the best user experience, we hit the pause button on new features to focus on perfecting the worlds most advanced operating system.

A new technology called "Grand Central" will make it easy for developers to create programs that take full advantage of the power of multi-core Macs. Also introduced is Open Compute Library (OpenCL), which extends the computing power of the GPU to any application written with OpenCL commands. Snow Leopard will also raise the software limit for RAM to 16 TB.

Also introduced is Quicktime X, which "optimizes support for modern audio and video formats resulting in extremely efficient media playback." Safari will also be receiving an optimized Javascript rendering engine (previously rumored) that will increase performance by 53%.

Beyond speed enhancements, Snow Leopard will also include out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007. Apple is aiming for the software to ship in "about a year."

Other announcements made at WWDC include 3G iPhone, 2.0 Firmware, SDK, MobileMe.

After months of anticipation, the heavily rumored 3G iPhone was announced today during Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference Keynote.

"Just one year after launching the iPhone, were launching the new iPhone 3G that is twice as fast at half the price," said Steve Jobs, Apples CEO. "iPhone 3G supports Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync right out of the box, runs the incredible third party apps created with the iPhone SDK, and will be available in more than 70 countries around the world this year."

The iPhone 3G will be available July 11th in 22 countries for $199 for 8 GB and $299 for 16 GB. The 16 GB model also comes in white. Apple has posted details on their website, but it is currently overwhelmed.

USA Today provides some additional confirmation to the rumors that the next generation iPhone will benefit from carrier subsidies. According to the newspaper, the new iPhone will start at $199:

The price also will rock: $199, according to people with knowledge of the matter, down from the current $399 and $499. Sources declined to be cited by name or affiliation because Apple and AT&T haven't authorized anybody to speak publicly about pricing until after Monday's announcement. The $199 price is being subsidized, though USA TODAY could not confirm details.

Rumors of a $200 rebate first emerged in April alongside claims of GPS and a thinner design. Similar claims were again echoed just last week.

Meanwhile Barrons has heard that the Foxxconn, Apple's iPhone manufacturer, has only shipped "several thousand" of the new iPhone and don't expect to ramp production up until the middle of the month. This would suggest an actual launch date closer to the reported AT&T blockout dates (June 15-July 15th).
