Thursday May 29, 2025 1:59 pm PDT by
With the next-generation version of iOS and other 2025 software updates, Apple is planning to change its numbering scheme. Rather than iOS 19, which would logically follow iOS 18, Apple is instead going to call the update iOS 26. Apple plans to use 26 across all of its platforms (the number representing the upcoming year), which will presumably be less confusing than having iOS 19, macOS 16,...

Wow, 1k off for a 2TB, cellular + wifi... making it 1399?!? That's an insane deal. Even if it's not the latest M4. If I were in the market for an iPad I would jump on this.
Does it mean that all this time they could have been selling it for that price and still make a profit? That margin on the original price must be criminal. Either that, or there is something about how retail works that I don't understand and need someone to explain to me.

I don’t think Best Buy is making money on the device, but Apple may give them a “rebate” based on selling the device based on whatever negotiated contract they have, or a guaranteed buyback price. In the end Best Buy isn’t hurting at the end.

There is no such thing as a “criminal” margin. The price is based on what the market will bear; basic Economics 101.

My understanding of retail is that getting a $1399 sale is better than carrying a hypothetical value $2399 inventory that you never actually see any cash for while its value continues to decrease. I expect this is less about maximizing profit and more about limiting loss.
