Apple Seeds Eighth Public Beta of macOS 13 Ventura

Apple today seeded the eighth beta of macOS Ventura to its public beta testing group, allowing non-developers to test the new macOS Ventura operating system ahead of its release. The eighth beta comes following the seventh public beta and it corresponds with tenth developer beta released earlier this week.

Public beta testers can download the macOS 13 Ventura update from the Software Update section of the System Preferences app after installing the proper profile from Apple's beta software website.

macOS Ventura introduces Stage Manager, a new multi-tasking option for focusing on a task while having other apps waiting in the wings. ‌Stage Manager‌ puts your main app front and center, tucking your other apps to the side for quick access.

Continuity Camera allows you to use your iPhone as a webcam for your Mac, offering much better camera quality than the built-in Mac camera. Apple is building special stands to hold the ‌iPhone‌ with a Mac, and there are neat features like Desk View, which uses the Ultra Wide lens.

Handoff now works with FaceTime so you can answer calls on the Mac and then transfer them over to another device, and Messages is gaining undo, edit, and mark as unread features. SharePlay now works in Messages in addition to ‌FaceTime‌, and the Mail app has been overhauled. Search is more relevant, emails can be scheduled, and there's even an option to undo an email for up to 10 seconds after it's sent.

Apple brought the Weather and Clock apps to the Mac, redesigned System Preferences and renamed it System Settings, and added support for Shared Tab Groups. Passwords are being replaced with more secure Passkeys in iOS 16 and macOS Ventura, and there are updates to Spotlight, Visual Lookup, Live Text, and more.

There are a ton of other features in macOS Ventura, and we have a full rundown available in our dedicated macOS Ventura roundup.

Apple should consider taking a gap year on software releases, especially for macOS. Its time for a Snow Leopard release.

Everyone would rejoice if there wasn't the annual stuff getting broken because Apple reworks all of the plumbing underneath. It's getting really tiring. "Are we there yet?" I've been asking this for years. Seems like we haven't arrived. Hopefully Apple can come to a place where it's not necessary to revamp the whole damn thing every year & add features when they're ready!
And it’s not just Apple, it’s the entire damn software industry.

One of the many things Facebook has done to gravely harm the world: legitimizing the idiotic philosophy “move fast and break things.”

Apple was supposed to be better than that.

Maybe it’s a side effect of our short attention span Kardashian world. Nobody cares about quality anymore, just shininess. Even if just beneath the shiny there’s no substance.

I would love this, as I think most Apple enthusiasts would. We don't need more bells and whistles, we need the ones we have to be as rock-solid as the hardware has become, and the software used to be.

I think the only reason this won't happen is that shareholders, and the overall market press, would freak out and claim doom and gloom. There is very little patience in the arena of consumer tech investing, and Apple is beholden to it's investors.

That said, those of us who have been using Apple gizmos for decades, and remember the Snow Leopard days, would celebrate and shout from the nerdy rooftops. Further, I'd bet Apple devs would welcome the time to polish their work even more!

I would adore being wrong here (my wife just perked up her ears, lol), but I doubt a year of pure polish is in our future...

Sure and then people will complain Apple doesn’t innovate anymore. Whatever Apple does, people here will keep pissing vinegar!
