Why would I want this? Pictured is the m1 pro. It already has HDMI and Ethernet and headphone jacks, why would I want two of these ports? Lol
Could you point out where the built-in Ethernet jack is on any post 2012 MacBook (any model) is?

I can't ever see myself buying one of the "attached" hubs, it just looks like damage waiting to happen. I'll take mine with a cord please.

All I really want is a USB only hub, ideally with 3 USB-C (since it blocks one) and 2 USB-A ports.

This hub offers headphones jack because it blocks one of them.

FWIW, I bought one of these during the kickstarter. It comes with a short USB-C cable so you can either use it in less-attached mode OR with an iPad Pro or other USB-C device. So far, I like it. It's solidly attached when in use, and not difficult to detach. My only wish is that the HDMI was bidirectional so I'd not have to drag my Camlink 4K along as well when recording video. However, I expect that was probably left out for cost reasons...

I'm using it on a 2018 MBP, the four-TB-only model, so it adds a bunch of functionality.

I bought one too during the kickstarter (actually, bought 2) and I've had a pretty positive experience with it as well on my M1 Pro and also my wife's M1 Air. I'm not worried about it sticking out and it seems sturdy enough, and like you said there's a very short cable included if that's how you want to use it. But it works nice for having 2 HDMI monitors and easy USB-A connectivity, and my wife uses it more than I thought she would too. I get that it's not for everyone, but then... don't buy it. If you think you could use it, it seems well made and performs well enough for me.
