This tells me that the 16 GB RAM models are selling way better than the 8 GB models and they're trying to drive some demand for the lower specced machines. I picked up a 16 GB M1 air :)

Or you could save $400+ and use the cloud for most of your storage. Where your data is backed up and not subject to loss if someone steals your device, your drive shorts out, or your home burns down.
But then you’re just making excuses for Apple to justify their ridiculously expensive storage pricing. Plenty of people benefit from local storage when they have large video projects and their media: games, movies, music, etc. Good internet is still not a guarantee either everywhere. Cloud isn’t an option for all use cases
