You can put together much better read/write speeds with a TB3 external drive NvME enclosure and an NvME drive, than you can with this thing.

Just want to point out that 2 TB portable SSD (a complete retail product) costs $189, while Apple charges $400 for a 1 TB BTO option in an M1 Mac.
All SSDs are not created equal. The externals you're talking about are about 1/3 the speed, have a shorter mean time to failure, and lack the redundancy that Apple supplies. Just thought I'd point that out.

It’s very chunky. I want an m.2 drive I can put on my keychain with TB3 performance.

I hope it's better than the Crucial X8 I have, its great for small transfers but anything large the drive becomes almost untouchably hot and slows to about 10kbps - awful design - they clearly never tried to actually use it!
