Netflix Launches in UK and Ireland, iOS Devices Included

Netflix yesterday announced its launch in the United Kingdom and Ireland, once again expanding the footprint of the company's popular streaming service.

Netflix is available now, and anyone can get a one month free trial: click-to-watch TV programmes and films streamed instantly over the Internet to your smart TV, game console, computer, tablet, or mobile device. After the free trial, it costs just £5.99 or €6.99. Our catalog is full of complete TV programmes such as The Only Way is Essex, Prison Break, and Damages (watch from the pilot episode all the way through the last complete season) and great films such as 3:10 to Yuma, Blitz and The English Patient, with new content added continuously.

With the launch, the company has made its services available across a number of different platforms, including the company's universal app for iPhone and iPad that has gone live in both countries' App Stores. In addition, we're hearing that Netflix has appeared as an option on the Apple TV in the new markets, although some users have had difficulties getting it up and running.

I'm giving it a go. Will probably watch some Dexter to start with, just as soon as it kicks in on Apple TV (still error for me).


Try switching the power off on your Apple TV and restarting it. It was instantly available after I did it.

That sucks. I signed up on the Mac and it went through OK.

Now watching 'Heroes' on my iPad. It's working great!


I finally managed to sign up and it's working great on the iPad.

Netfix is now showing up on the menu of the Apple TV but gives an error message when you try to open it. Must be patient. :D

is this better than lovefilm?


- Should have better support for streaming to Apple devices
- If you want streaming-only, it's a lot cheaper
- Lovefilm's streaming video quality is awful.

I'm going to try it out for a month and then decide, but I expect I'll end up dumping Lovefilm.

Massively Disappointed with it.

Why not get you product sorted before releasing it in the UK? Not a half arsed effort of mediocre shows. :rolleyes:

Yes, but even not so recent popular stuff isn't there.

Bourne? no
Bond? no
Ironman? no
Pixar? no
Crank? no
Matrix? no
Star Wars? no
Lock Stock? no
Godfather? no
Shawshank? no
Batman / Dark Knight? no
Lord of the Rings? no

and so on.


This is heavily geek/action-movie skewed, hopefully the populace at large is looking to watch movies that are a bit more spread out genre wise but unfortunately for Netflix those are the kind of people who are initially going to check out Netflix and they are going to be disappointed. Oh well...

But given how cheap it is, it may still be worth it.. If you can find 4 movies and 10 tv shows a month to watch, it already more than pays for itself. The convenience factor is great and it is worth a pound or two.

It's like Microsoft's version of Flash.

It's annoying to have to install it, but it should be harmless.


I signed up fine without going through Facebook and I think I'll try the service out on iPad and then consider installing Silverlight.

What is the Netflix library like? Is there a great selection of content available?


Now I've had a chance to take a look around, the answer is a definite no!

The selection is pretty poor. There's a good few movies that I want to watch - and there lots of TV - but if you try searching for any recent popular movie you probably won't find it.
